And right now, Canadians are applying for firearms licenses in record numbers, even as the government cracks down with tough rhetoric backing laws that are written with little basis in fact.

The glory days of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, when you could get a surplus M1 Carbine or Garand for beer money, may be long gone, but a new team-up between the CMP and  Tisas may carry just a little bit of the feeling of those halcyon days. The deal between the CMP and Tisas sees the manufacturer building 1911-pattern semiauto pistols for the firearms safety/training organization. It is the first-ever 1911 production deal that the CMP has made with a commercial manufacturer.

The Pennsylvania State Police have announced their new duty pistol. Going forward, the state law enforcement body will use the Walther PDP platform, and each new pistol will be set up to mount a red dot sight.

Longtime readers of the blog and frequent listeners of the podcast will know that I’m personally a huge fan of shooting competitions. While I have my roots in Steel Challenge, in the 15 years that I’ve been competitively shooting I’ve expanded my portfolio of successfully completed matches from trap shooting to obscure and insane competitions like Finnish and Woodland Brutality. This year is already chalking up to be one of my busiest years for competition and while at SHOT Show 2024, I might have just talked my way into probably the toughest competition yet – The Tactical Games. At the show, I was able to have an in-person and on-video interview with the guy who runs the Tactical Games, Nick Thayer. Nick Thayer was happy to be on the podcast not just to talk about the competition and how you can get into it, but also about the unique relationship that Under Armour has with the Tactical Games, and how their support of the sport is a good indicator of things to come in the shooting sports space. Personally, I had always assumed that Under Armour was an “anti-gun” company, but as you’ll hear in today’s episode, that attitude is slowly making its way out the door at the fitness clothing mogul, and that could mean great things for more than just the shooting sports industry.

J.P. Sauer & Sohn have introduced a new bolt action rifle, the  Sauer 505. This new rifle has two-piece furniture and a completely new action that is advertised as silky smooth, super silent and extremely fast. Let’s take a look at the specs and features of the new Sauer 505 bolt action rifle.

Expanding their extensive catalog of bolt action rifles, Mauser has unveiled three new models for 2024 – the Mauser 18 Pure, Mauser 18 Pure Max and Mauser 12 Grey Max. What sets these three models apart from other Mauser 18 and Mauser 12 rifles is the laminated wood furniture. The difference between the Mauser 18 Pure and Mauser 18 Pure Max is in the stock profile with the former sporting a more classic stock and the latter being equipped with a thumbhole stock. Mossberg has announced updates to its Silver Reserve lineup of over-under shotguns, including a new Waterfowl model, a Turkey model and a synthetic-stocked option.

Mossberg is keen to get shotgunners equipped with red dot sights, and is quickly expanding its lineup of scatterguns with red dot-ready receivers. This includes the Mossberg Pro Waterfowl lineup, including new Snow Goose models.

Virginia-based Optimus Arms is growing—they’ve recently announced the acquisition of Hexmag and Sentry Solutions from Sentry Products. In turn, that means Optimus Arms is now going to form a new company from these pieces called Hexmag USA LLC.

Holosun has grown to be an industry leader in optics in recent years. Many of their red dots and reflex sights have become some of the most popular options on the market, following on from more humble reputational beginnings. They have also dabbled in the night vision game, with their product catalog including a selection of infrared laser and illuminator units. Around SHOT Show 2023, Holosun revealed that they were working on getting deeper into the low-light shooting market by virtue of a pair of upcoming digital prototype optics, one thermal and one standard NV. Now a year later, the night vision model is ready and heading to market soon. The Cody Firearms Museum, located at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, is an icon. This incredible museum houses what they advertise as “the most comprehensive collection of American firearms in the world.” With the current count of more than 7000 guns and some 30,000 gun-related artifacts, this bold claim is well warranted. The museum is not publicly funded but is supported in part by admission tickets, tours and events, and membership options. Recently, GunBroker.com teamed up with Ruger’s Custom Shop, artist Paul Lantuch and Baron Engraving, and Rangehot photographer Hunter Elliott to further support this important institution. These entities collaborated to offer an auction benefiting the museum, for a gorgeous one-of-a-kind .45LC Ruger revolver, dubbed the “Jade Vaquero”. Tisas USA and SDS Imports have just announced a safety recall is in effect for five Tisas 1911 pistols chambered in .45 ACP and 10mm Auto. The announcement states that pistols within specific serial number ranges could potentially have the hammer follow the slide forward when chambering a round. SIG SAUER unveiled their MCX-SPEAR LT series of firearms in the fall of 2022, following up from the prior release of their large-frame SPEAR model. The original SPEAR is essentially the commercial version of their DoD Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program entry to replace the military’s aging M4 carbines. The LT versions were added to maintain the design’s advantages while bringing additional options to buyers in further chamberings, such as 5.56 or 300 BLK. Now SIG has announced the release of a new special edition of their popular SPEAR LT, which is offered in Multicam thanks to their partnership with custom Cerakote gurus Blowndeadline, rather than the series’ standard FDE or black. Galco has shown a bit of German love towards Heckler & Koch with the Galco Triton 3.0 Kydex Strongside/Crossdraw IWB (Inside-the-Waistband) holster now being offered for the H&K VP9 handgun.
