Smith & Wesson have announced the release of their new M&P 15 Sport III. The Sport III weighs 6.52 lbs, has a 16-inch barrel with a 1:8 twist rate and a 15-inch free-floated M-LOK handguard. The M&P 15 Sport III has an MSRP of $799.

Iowans may soon see guns in schools—legally—under the new Students First Safety Act. Iowa’s state legislature recently passed the Students First Safety Act with 61 percent of the house voting in favor of the law (which is now labeled as HF2586). Note that this does not mean the act is law at this point—it must still be approved by Iowa’s state senate.

The original Bushmaster ORC (Optics Ready Carbine) was a simple, hard-use, flat-top AR that offered no real frills and could be had at a very low asking price leaving more room in your budget for optics and other accessories. Fast forward to today and the tastes and requirements that most people have these days when it comes to hard-use rifles have changed a bit, and that’s why Bushmaster has revamped the ORC with new features including modern handguards, as well as several different configurations that still keep the cost low, but improve key areas of the rifle that are often upgraded first.

The CZ Bren 2, alongside a plethora of other Western rifles, has seen extensive use in Ukraine over the past two years. Rifle transferred from the Czech Republic as aid have equipped numerous elements of Ukraine’s armed forces including special operations units and regular infantry alike. Feedback on the rifles has been largely positive and the war in Ukraine represents a significant combat test for the platform.

Maxim Defense have introduced two new chamberings for their PDX-SD – .300BLK and 7.62x39mm. The PDX-SD has an integrated system with a short suppressor with an outer diameter of 2.25 inches and a length of 7.4 inches. The gun is 7.6 lbs total and has an overall length of 23.75 inches. It is available with either a stock, as an SBR, or with a brace as a pistol.

Watchtower Firearms is a new gun company that emerged out of Texas in 2023. The brand name is an homage to the US military forces who fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II’s Guadalcanal Campaign, which was codenamed Operation Watchtower. Among other products, the company is launching a menu of AR-style offerings as well as one initial handgun model, which they have named the Apache. The Apache is a double-stack 1911 that is designed and marketed chiefly with the competitive shooter in mind. Swampfox Optics have announced a new edition to their range, the Tomahawk II LPVO. The Tomahawk II is a second focal plane low power variable optic which is available in 1-4×24 and 1-6×24. In a departure from their standard appendix and outside waistband holsters, T.REX Arms is now selling a hybrid holster for 4-o’clock carry. Unlike many other hybrid holsters, the  Ironside Hybrid holster fully encloses the trigger guard inside the Kydex shell rather than against the backer material. This design avoids the risk found in other hybrid holsters where the backer material can flex into the trigger guard and cause an accidental discharge when holstering up.

The Bergara Academy Long Range Shooting School has an additional new location in Wyoming at the Queen Mountain Ranch outside Evanston. It joins the existing location in Montana. Bergara will offer a series of 2-day “Beginner Western Hunter” classes running from May through August. Shooters will learn to engage targets out to 1,000 yards in hunting scenarios.

What’s the quickest way to beef up your country’s national defense capabilities in a big hurry? In Finland they’re betting the answer is: Open new shooting ranges. The classic .22LR rifle with a long tube magazine is a standard feature in rural American households. Millions of farm boys started their shooting careers with a Marlin Model 60 or similar rifle that would take almost half a box of rimfire shells… but in Minnesota, some lawmakers are considering rimfire tube mag restrictions that would see those rifles banned as “assault weapons.”

Tracer rounds have some very important uses in tactical/military applications … and some very big drawbacks. As their name suggests, tracers allow you to “trace” the incendiary bullet’s path visually, as it burns a bright path through the sky.
