TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #48: MIL-SPEC Monkey

Many of you will know the name MIL-SPEC Monkey from our previous work with him on TFBTV’s various morale patches. “Monkey”, as we call him, has been a military gear and weapons aficionado for quite some time with his study beginning within the video game industry while working on the  America’s Army video game project that was commissioned and published by the United States Army. From there, Monkey was able to get real-world experience with a lot of in-use military gear and this sparked an interest that eventually lead him to where he is today. In today’s episode of the podcast me and Monkey talk about our thoughts on some products from TriggrCon 2022, how camouflage has been constantly changed and adapted over time, as well as his story on how he got into the business of making patches. Please welcome MIL-SPEC Monkey to the show!

TFB Podcast Roundup 66: ATF Regs, and Tactical Blindness

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 66. As the year continues to press on and we’re forced to enter yet another cycle of intense politics, the topic of ATF regulations always seems to come to the fore within the firearms world. While we here at TFB like to stay away from the political side of things, the regulations that the ATF puts out affect us directly and so we’ll often address them. Most recently the ATF put a new ruling regarding firearm frames or receivers which has since been subject to an expanded preliminary injunction challenging the ruling by the FPC. Pistol stabilizing braces have also been a pretty hot-button topic this year but for those outside the firearm world what exactly constitutes a pistol or rifle is often still a confusing subject. On that note, we’ll be hearing from Tampa Carry where they explain with visual aids exactly which is what and what federal codes apply to each firearm just to remove all doubt on the subject. We’ll also be hearing from the Firearms Nation podcast and their guest former US Army Sniper John Simpson to talk about the concept of Tactical Blindness and how to deal with it. Please sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast Episode #47: Ron with Trailblazer Firearms

Imagination, Integrity, and Innovation. These are the three hallmarks that dominate the ethos of the folks at Trailblazer Firearms and today on the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast I’ve had the opportunity to bring on their President, Ron Dan. Ron and I met during TriggrCon 2022 where he and his team brought out the new threaded barrel LifeCard, as well as their new and unique Pivot 9mm foldable pistol caliber carbine. Today Ron and I discuss both of these new firearms, the founding and history of Trailblazer Firearms, and where Ron and his team hope to guide the company in the following years in terms of products, and iterations of current products that they have on their website already.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast Episode #46: Kirk Foreman with Aero Precision

Aero Precision recently announced that not only would they be offering their first suppressor, but also their first-ever bolt-action receiver as well! The Lahar-30 is intended to be Aero Precisions suppressor offering for those who want to get into buying suppressors but are also worried about future-proofing their purchase so that it can be adapted to other platforms without needing to worry about barrel length restrictions or the type of QD mount you want to get into. Meanwhile, the Solus bolt action receiver was initially intended to be just a short-action receiver with swappable bolt heads, but now it seems (and all but 100% confirmed by today’s guest) that Aero Precision might actually be offering the Solus as a complete turn-key rifle. If you’re excited about either of these new product offerings from Aero Precision, then today you’ll get to hear from Aero’s Product Marketing Coordinator Kirk Foreman who is going to tell us all about Aero’s new products, as well as some of the things they’re doing behind the scenes to keep up with industry demand.

TFB Podcast Roundup 64: 2A Talk, Ruger LC Carbine, and Ben Stoeger

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 64. Part of being a competent firearms owner is having the ability to constantly learn and adapt your methods for various situations. Hop and I recently were able to attend an event at the legendary Gunsite academy in Arizona and if you’ve never been, the gist of Gunsite is that it’s basically Disney World for those who want to take all sorts of firearms training classes. The instructors at Gunsite have tons of knowledge and experience that they are more than willing to share with participants of their classes. If you can’t make it out to Gunsite, there are tons of great experienced shooters out there who are willing to share their learned expertise with you on the internet so you can take that training with you to the range and practice it on your own. Today we’ll be hearing from pro shooters like Ben Stoeger on Canada’s Slam Fire Radio Podcast, and National Champion Michelle Viscusi on Taurus’ new By the Horns podcast. As usual, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of firearms podcast content.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast Episode #45: Desert Brutality With Russell Phagan

Desert Brutality 2022 is right around the corner and set to take place between November 11-13 in St. George, Utah at the Southern Utah Practical Shooting Range. The Southern Utah Practical Shooting Range is back up and running again as the host location for Desert Brutality after it had to go through an extensive remodel after issues arose surrounding residential buildup around the location of the range. Brutality matches across the country are a great way to get out and have a lot of fun, competitive yet friendly environment where you can test your gear in some more practical shooting scenarios than you’d be able to at the indoor shooting range. If you think you might be interested in participating in this year’s match, there are still several slots left and registration info can be found down below! Just like in the past, Russell Phagan, who is a core component of every Brutality match, is here to give us the rundown on this year’s event, and a few small previews about what competitors can expect to encounter during the course of the two-day event. Please welcome back Russel to the show!

TFB Podcast Roundup 63: Are Expensive Guns Worth It?

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 63. Firearms are in a lot of ways just like cars. There are a lot of them out there, a lot of people love them, some people use them as tools while others use them as toys and there are a million different places in-between where both firearms and automobile customers can find themselves when it comes to the types of these items that they buy. Generally speaking, I am a utilitarian and I am more than willing to pay a couple of extra hundred bones for a firearm that fits my specific task just like without going overboard in terms of price and features. Basically what I’m getting at is that if I’m paying extra money for something, I want to get extra use out of it in some shape form, or fashion. For others, the extra money could be better spent on durability, or maybe even aesthetic characteristics. On the other hand, some people just like to collect firearms purely for their novelty. No matter how you like your guns, everyone does indeed have a price and that’s why our first episode this week for Podcast Roundup 63 will be from Tom Gresham’s Gun talk as he brings on Mike Mihalski from Sons of Liberty Gun Works to talk about their quite expensive AR-15 rifles that customers swear by. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun-podcast listening.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast Episode #44: TriggrCon 2022 Talk with Ava Flanell

TriggrCon 2022 was an absolute blast and I’m really glad that Rainer Arms has got the ball rolling again and is offering something akin to SHOT Show, but available to the general public. TriggrCon 2022 was hosted at the Flint Oak Hunting Lodge in Kansas and was a two-day event. Exhibitors like Aero Precision, Maxim Defense, Angstadt Arms, Stern Defense, Primary Weapons Systems, and Silencer Shop, all came out to showcase their latest products and give attendees a chance to try them out on the various ranges at the show. While I was there, I was able to meet up with new and old friends in the industry and one of them happened to be Ava Flanell. Ava is a current firearms instructor as well as a firearms business owner who loves checking out shows like TriggrCon to bring her audience a similar flavor of content that we give to you guys here at TFB. In addition, Ava also hosts her own podcast the GunFunny podcast which we’ve featured several times on TFB’s Weekly Podcast Roundup. Please welcome Ava to the show!

TFB Podcast Roundup 62: Suppressor Science, and How to Shoot a Pistol

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 62. As we approach the end of the year, you can probably expect the firearms market to start to gear up for some of its biggest events and releases of the year. By the time you’re reading this TriggrCon 2022 will have just wrapped up and you can probably expect to see some posts this week from releases both myself and James Reeves discovered while at the event. Be sure to keep tabs here at TFB or on the YouTube channel TFBTV for updates from TriggrCon 2022. This week I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite podcasts I’ve been listening to while traveling these last couple of weeks. The most interesting podcast from this week’s roundup in my opinion is the one from the Talking Lead Podcast with John Hollister going over the science and history of firearm suppressors. If you’re even remotely interested in suppressors or their history that is one you shouldn’t miss this week, just be prepared to listen for multiple days as it’s two and a half hours long. So without further ado, please enjoy this week’s selection for TFB Podcast Roundup 62!

Hello everyone and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 61! We’ve got a great lineup of gun-podcast content for you guys this week and I just want to take a moment to remind all of you of an upcoming event in the South Eastern part of the United States that I think most of you would be willing to drive out a couple of hours for. What we’re talking about is the All American Machine Gun Shoot being hosted at The Sawmill Complex in Laurens South Carolina. A lot of you will remember that we recently lost one of the largest machine gun shoots in the United States and thankfully some good friends of mine decided to take up the mantle and fill the void that was left there. The All American Machine Gun Shoot will take place between October 14th and 15th and tickets are only $20 ($30 for two-day admission and $5 for children 12 & under) and can be purchased on-site at the gate. If you’re interested in going, you can expect a great show and the opportunity to handle and shoot a lot of cool guns. For more details on the machine gun shoot, you can check out the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast episode where we interviewed Anonymous Bob and his daughter RapidFire Rachel who are responsible for getting this ode to full-auto up and running! Enjoy this week’s selection of podcasts and we’ll hopefully see you at the Machine Gun Shoot!

TFB Podcast Roundup 60: Weaponized Math and Aftermarket Parts

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 60. Math was always one of those subjects in school that I never really enjoyed or looked forward to. To be 100% honest, it was always a struggle for me throughout most of the school and something I almost never really appreciated until I started flying and shooting. While math can be applied to a great many recreational activities, few sports take advantage of math as well as shooting sports do whether its generating load data for a new cartridge, determining the proper torque specs for a given piece of hardware, or “weaponizing math” for precise long-range shots. No matter how you slice it, if you’re into firearms and you want to get optimal results from your firearms and components, throwing in even just a little bit of grade-school math will take you a long way. That’s why this week’s first selection for our 60th podcast roundup features the guys over at Gun Talk Media and their guest Frank Galli of The Sniper’s Hide. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun-oriented podcasts.

TFB B-Side Podcast: An Interview with an Internet Gun Meme Lord

As the legend goes, the court jester in medieval society was the only human being in the King’s Court that could openly criticize, poke fun at, and tease the king without fear of being put on the gallows or worse. Obviously, in today’s hypersensitive world, we’re in an entirely different predicament and one of those is that nearly everyone out there has a joke to tell or something to have a good-hearted chuckle about – even if it’s something we love. That’s why today’s guest is one I’m happy to have on as he’s been a great source for me personally when it comes to being able to take a step back and laugh at the industry that I love – firearms. Natos_Revenge aka Wes is a self-described “internet meme lord” and runs a humorous set of Instagram accounts primarily centered around guns, gun culture, new firearms releases, and a bit of everything else in between. Today Wes and I discuss how memes fit into the world of firearms and how they might even help steer the gun industry towards a better future for all gun owners, even if it ruffles a few feathers along the way.

TFB B-Side Podcast: Finnish Brutality with Laura

If Finnish Brutality sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve covered the event briefly before right here on TFB. I recently had the opportunity to participate in InRangeTV’s Woodland Brutality 2022 and I had an absolute blast with not just the stages but meeting with all sorts of characters at the event. With my first Brutality Match out of the way, I sought after more and while I plan on attending the 2022 Desert Brutality match, this year’s Finnish Brutality came and went faster than I could plan for it. Thankfully my good friend Laura was able to compete in the event and she agreed to come on the show today to share her experiences with all of us so that you all can get a taste of what it’s like competing in the joint InRangeTV/Varusteleka match which has not only your standard fare of challenges like the infamous Kasarda Drill but also adds some uniquely Finnish challenges to the mix to keep things interesting. Laura also spends a little bit of time talking with us about what it’s like to be a Finnish firearms owner and gives us all a peek behind the curtain into the process and hurdles surrounding getting a firearms license in the country. Please give a warm welcome to today’s guest, Laura!

TFB Podcast Roundup 58: Which ACOG is the Best?

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 58. I hope everyone’s summer was great. This year I had a lot of good opportunities to get out and about with a lot of new guns and I’m very grateful to have been able to spend more time this summer shooting and competing than I did last year. However, like usual, I wasn’t really happy about the intense heat so you could say that I’m itching to dive headfirst not only into fall but also winter down here in the south. This week’s episodes are a combination of the old and the new as we’re bringing back a great episode from the Gun Talk Media podcast, a new podcast about unexpected enemies during SHTF situations, and of course, once again featuring one of our own homegrown podcasts with a long overdue guest – Nick C – TFB Staff Writer and Night Vision Extraordinaire. If you’re curious about the title, you won’t have long to figure it out, it’s our first featured episode of this week featuring Hop from TFBTV, DeltaThirtyFour, and BrassFacts discussing which ACOG is objectively the best ACOG (Hint, it’s the TA11). Sit back, relax, and as always, enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content.

Nick absolutely loves everything to do with night vision and one of his greatest goals is to dispel a lot of the mysteries, and falsehoods that surround the night vision world.

TFB B-Side Podcast: Michael with Walk The Talk America (WTTA)

Mental health is a very polarizing subject on its own. Throw in firearms and you’ve got the ingredients for a heated discussion that is guaranteed to end any holiday family dinner in spectacular fashion. However, Michael Sodini, President of Walk the Talk America is attempting to end the stigma surrounding mental health care when it comes to the subject of owning firearms. Today Michael and I discuss his background in the firearms industry and how it lead to him starting up the WTTA. WTTA has seen some explosive growth since its inception and has given him hope that his efforts can save lives by reducing suicides by firearm. Michael’s company currently offers free and anonymous online mental health screening, and familiarization classes for mental health professionals that dispel many of the myths surrounding firearms, familiarize these professionals with live-fire experience on the range, and then how to apply the knowledge they’ve received in their clinical work. TFB B-Side Podcast: Preston With QuietBore & Creative Arms

Suppressors are now one of the most popular and sought-after firearm accessories on the market. It’s almost universally accepted now that suppressors do provide a tangible benefit to shooters when employed correctly. However, the rub has always been that suppressors in the United States still remain one of the most expensive firearms accessories on the market. The folks over at Creative Arms and Quiet Bore are taking a different approach to suppressors and instead offer some of the most affordable suppressors on the market. In today’s episode of the TFB B-Side Podcast Preston and I talk about some of the benefits of the QuietBore lineup, their origins in DIY suppressor kits, and how some of Preston’s own personal interests have translated into improvements in the suppressor market.

TFB Podcast Roundup 56: Rimfire For Self-Defense, and Homesteading

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 56! This week here in the mid-south we’ve finally received our first bit of reprieve from the harsh summer heat. For me, that means a lot more time spent on the range without my camera (and myself) overheating, and hopefully, that also translates to more firearms and gear reviews for everyone here. One of the things I like to do out on the range while I’m getting targets set up or loading magazines is listening to podcasts. This week’s selection of podcasts features some good general listening with one very specific podcast that piqued my interest and covers something we’ve talked about a few times here on TFB – using a rimfire gun for self-defense. The guys from the Gun Talk Radio podcast talk a bit about using Aguila 60-grain in a Beretta Bobcat to see if it might make for a more useful self-defense option over some other current .22LR self-defense offerings. As always, sit back, relax, and have a cold one while you soak in this week’s selection of gun podcast content.

TFB B-Side Podcast: Tara with How I Carry (Concealed Carry For Women)

For Today’s TFB Podcast episode I’ve brought on a recent acquaintance of mine, Tara from How I Carry. How I Carry is basically Tara’s online presence and what she does is specializes in what I think is a very underserved market – concealed carry advice and reviews for women. With more and more women taking interest in carrying concealed for themselves, the type of information that Tara provides could prove to be quite important – possibly even lifesaving for these new concealed carriers. Today I ask Tara about her best training, firearms, and gear advice that she has for other women. We also talk a bit about her journey from a non-gun owner, to a concealed carrier, to a budding competitor!

TFB B-Side Podcast: Is Reloading For You? With the Ultimate Reloader

Reloading is one of those hobbies I never thought I’d actually pick up – even as a firearms owner. However, all it took for me to get addicted to the benchtop hobby was for a good friend of mine to send me a very inexpensive Lee Challenger reloading press kit and from there, the rest was history. Reloading can seem intimidating for the uninitiated, I know I was quite intimidated during my first range trip with my first box of reloaded ammunition, however, 10 years down the road, I’ve not only gained a solid grasp on the concept, but I’ve also dipped into new rabbit holes of information I once again never thought I’d find myself in. Suffice it to say reloading is just as rewarding as it is educational and I personally think that more firearms owners should have at least a basic grasp of the concept. I think these sentiments are shared by our guest today, Gavin, a.k.a the Ultimate Reloader. Gavin runs a YouTube channel and website that specializes in all things reloading, as well as some great informative precision rifle content that has really been a valuable resource to me as a reloader over the years. I’m honored today to have him on the podcast with us to give you guys a bird’s eye view of handloading/reloading so that you can determine for yourself whether or not you’d like to pick it up either as a hobby or as a means to shoot more without vastly increasing the cost of ammunition.

TFB Podcast Roundup 54: 8.6 BLK, Cody Wilson, & the FPC

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 54! Part of why I like the podcast medium so much is that it gives the direct sources of information a chance to speak directly with the intended audience, rather than have them filtered and editorialized through media sources. Although the information in the podcast still might be curated for the audience’s sake, I still think it gives us better insight into who these people are, what they believe in, and how they intend to tackle problems or obstacles within their respective professions. Today we’ve got a couple of episodes from some people I’ve actually met in person and even some people who’ve been on TFB’s own podcasts in previous years. In addition to some more renowned names within the firearms industry, we’re also hearing from Faxon Firearms this week while they take on a deep dive into the new 8.6 BLK cartridge.

TFB B-Side Podcast: Gunsmithing Advice with TFB Writer Sam S

Gunsmithing is one of those trades that often gets passed down from generation to generation. Sadly, in these times it seems like it’s almost falling out of favor. With the advent of tighter QC controls making firearms more or less maintenance-free for longer periods, and a lack of interest from the up-and-coming generations of firearms owners, gunsmithing is becoming a lost art. Thankfully, we’ve got young guys like TFB Writer Sam S. who are keeping the trade alive and today he’s here to give his advice and his take on the gunsmithing world. I was surprised to learn from Sam that there are actually a lot of great places you can either go to both online and in-person to learn these skills and along with that, the tools, reference materials, and know-how are almost all either in books or online these days. If you’ve ever wanted to be self-reliant when it comes to maintaining and modifying your firearms, have a seat, grab a drink, and listen in as our very own Sam S. gives us his best gunsmithing advice.

TFB Podcast Roundup 53: Hearing Protection, and Space Cowboys

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 53! Every year I think the gun industry goes through an intense cycle of focusing on hearing protection and this inevitably sparks discussion around suppressors and other sound mitigation techniques. While over-the-ear hearing protection becomes a must, especially with supersonic or much more powerful or larger cartridges, with many standard intermediate cartridges, a suppressor is often the way to go. In one particular episode that caught my attention this week, Vortex Nation has on audiologist Grace Sturdivant, owner of OtoPro Technologies, to talk about the human ear, how it works, and what really needs to happen in order for us to protect our hearing while handling and enjoying firearms. In addition to that great episode, we’ve got other good podcasts for your commute, chore list, or study session. TFB B-Side Podcast: Practical Shooting with The Humble Marksman

Practical shooting organizations have been in existence within the United States for over 70 years at this point and arguably longer if you include competitive Olympic shooting sports. However, with the increase in popularity and affordability of handguns, sports like USPSA, IPSC, and IDPA have come to the forefront of the firearms industry as its flagship sports gaining mass appeal, recognition, and love while still honing in on the intense core skill set required to place in the top spots. Our guest today is someone I’ve met at several firearms industry events and has since become a good friend of mine who is always a pleasure to shoot with. Dave Blanton, aka The Humble Marksman, is here today to talk about USPSA, IDPA, and other practical shooting sports in both a broad sense and in the sense that he’s a frequent and regular competitor heavily invested in the sport. If you’ve ever been interested in shooting sports, tune in and get ready to take a deep dive into practical shooting sports with The Humble Marksman and me.
