TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #64: Discussing Gun Patents with an Intellectual Property Lawyer

A lot of you here on TFB have closely followed various court cases over the years as we’ve reported them to you. In recent memory, there have been lawsuits between optics companies, and firearms manufacturers alike. Recently the TFB Podcast was reached out to by our guest today Mr. Dan Evans who not only reads TFB but has a particular interest in these specific topics – because it’s literally his job. Dan is an attorney who works for an Intellectual Property law firm and today he’s here to help walk us through the intricacies of patents and give us some insight as to how, and why various companies may want to sue one another over any alleged intellectual property violations. If you’ve been following the GWACs v KE Arms Lawsuit or the more recent Glock v Polymer80 case, this is a great episode to get a general understanding of how and why these processes take place.

TFB Podcast Roundup 81: The Evolution of Aftermarket Parts

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 81. One of the episodes in this week’s roundup really caught my eye as it’s something I’ve messed around with quite a bit – aftermarket parts. No matter your opinion on the subject, it’s clear that the aftermarket parts scene has not only evolved and changed over the years, but with the advent of 3D printing and a much broader appeal for firearms in recent times, it’s becoming a massive wing of the growing firearms industry here in the USA. Scott Volquartsen and Chad Wittrock of Volquartsen’s No Excuse to Miss Podcast talk about this specific subject and I think if you’re going to pick just one podcast to listen to this week, it’d be this one (right after the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast). As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast listening.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #63: Evan and Austin with Griffin Armament

Engineered Silence – this is the tagline that Griffin Armament adheres to with both its rifles and suppressors. Today’s episode of the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast not only features Griffin Armament, but today our host Pete takes the time to ask these good fellas just exactly how they measure their suppressor products against the current standards for sound reduction, other methods of measuring sound reduction or peak sound pressure and also talk at length about all the different types of tools out there used to test and measure suppressors. Long story short, there really isn’t a gold standard for measuring how suppressors perform, but there are some very common practices done by most suppressor manufacturers that Evan and Austin will share with us today. If you’re a suppressor junkie, then this episode is just for you! Please welcome Evan and Austin from Griffin Armament to the show!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #62: An Angstadt Update with Rich Angstadt

Angstadt Arms is probably most well-known now for being one of the few companies to make a roller delayed blowback 9mm PCC that isn’t an MP5. The Angstadt Arms roller delayed MDP-9 is a 9mm pistol or SBR that provides the user with a platform that is both compact and compatible with more affordable and available 9mm Glock magazines. In today’s episode, Rich and I discuss some of the development processes behind the MDP-9, some updates on the development of the integrally suppressed Vanquish 9mm upper, and a new variant chambered in .22LR that should be coming later this year. Please welcome our friend Rich Angstadt of Angstadt Arms back to the show for a much-needed Angstadt update!

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 79. I hope everyone had a great St. Patrick’s Day weekend, is well rested, and is being highly productive back at work today. I’m sure bright lights and loud noises are probably two of your least favorite things today so I think the best way to recover might be to listen to some soothing gun podcasts!

TFB Behind the Gun Podcast #61: Kyle Lynch Explains the RIFLESPEED Adjustable Gas Block

Adjustable gas blocks have been called everything from one of the most essential parts of an AR to being called gimmicks by some. No matter where you stand on the issue, most of you will have no doubt heard about the relatively new RIFLESPEED Tool-Free Military Grade Modular Gas Control system. We’ve even checked it out before right here on TFB. Today’s guest, Mr. Kyle Lynch is the inventor and owner of RIFLESPEED and today he’s here to explain how this system works, how he came about developing it, and some of the advantages his system offers to the end user.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #60: Jason with Backup Tactical

Even with both Pete and I handling TFB’s Behind The Gun Podcast, we’re not exactly able to get to everyone we want to at SHOT Show every year. Jason with Backup Tactical is one of those people but I’m glad we’re getting him on the show today because he’s quite honestly one of the most upbeat and positive people I’ve met within the industry. Jason is the owner of Backup Tactical, a company that produces high-quality, American-made aftermarket barrels, thread protectors, and now compensators for handguns. Today Jason and I talk some general shop about guns and the 2nd Amendment, as well as Jason’s thoughts and development process behind their new SIG Sauer P320 Precise Fit PROComp. If you pay attention to this episode, you’ll also get a sneak peek at their next product coming in 2023.

TFB Podcast Roundup 77: Losing a Leg, and Decentralization

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 77! This week we’ll be hearing from some brand-new podcasts as well as our old favorites. Some of the podcasts today cover pretty cool stories from US warfighters as well as some timely coverage on the nature of decentralization in our modern times from the folks at T.REX Arms on the REDACTED Culture Cast. If neither of those things catches your fancy, we’ll also be hearing from the guys at the Vortex Nation Podcast once again as they discuss the challenges that American Turkeys are facing in some specific regions across the United States and what could be done to perhaps reverse the recent trend. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #59: Joel Hodgdon with Remington Ammo

The ammunition industry has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the last decade with everything from national news reporting, and politics, to global pandemics marking the start of each rise and fall in the prices and availability of ammunition across the country. One of the companies that have put in a lot of work to keep the ammo flowing to American firearms is Remington and today we’re bringing back the marketing director for Remington Ammo – Joel Hodgdon to talk with Pete about the current state of the ammunition industry, as well as introduce some basic terminology and nomenclature surrounding ammunition for newcomers who may not be familiar with these terms.

TFB Podcast Roundup 76: An AK-50 Update, and Lever Guns

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 76. Quite a long time ago, I’m not sure how long ago exactly YouTube personality Brandon Hererra, who got his start in YouTube building out AK rifles, started the infamous AK-50 project. Since then the project has seen many delays as his channel has grown to leave his viewers and those interested in a 50BMG AK rifle with very few updates on his progress so far. Today we’ll be featuring a great podcast from the boys at Classic Firearms featuring Brandon and a much-needed update on the AK-50 development process. In addition to that, we’ve brought back some of your favorite podcasts with their latest episodes including our very own TFB podcast this week featuring Clark Aposhian who is very active in the 2A community on the legal side of things. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content in TFB Podcast Roundup 76.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #58: Clark Aposhian at SHOT Show 2023

Among the many interesting people Pete was able to talk to at SHOT Show 2023, Clark Aposhian is probably one of the most interesting to me. Clark’s list of certifications and accomplishments within the political sphere of the gun world is quite impressive and he was one of the people who helped spearhead the case to have the U.S. Supreme Court overturn the federal bump stock ban. In addition to that, Clark also holds numerous certifications for firearms training and handling and frequently offers his services, through his company FairWarning Training, to all levels of shooters ranging from basic level to advanced tactical firearms training and weapons handling.

TFB Podcast Roundup 75: Braces and Bump Stocks

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 75. There has been much talk as of late regarding various laws, regulations, and rulings regarding pistol stabilizing braces. While I could wax eloquent about the entire situation and its lack of merit or consistency, I think it’s best if I leave that up to this week’s featured podcasts. This week we’ll be hearing a bit about the recent overturning of the ATF’s bump stock ban, more about the ATF pistol brace rule situation, as well as a handful of other recent podcasts from some of my favorite fellow gun podcasters. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s roundup of gun podcast content!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #57: Open Source Defense

This latest episode of the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast comes once again from SHOT Show 2023 with our returning host Pete. Open Source Defense is an organization much like TFB in that we’re both not interested in the culture war – just the guns. Open Source Defense is a gun rights organization completely working from and inside of the online sphere where most modern gun owners also do most of their shopping and discussion on firearms. Today Pete meets with BJ Campbell, Kareem Shaya, and Chuck Rossi to discuss the state of American gun ownership in 2023.

TFB Podcast Roundup 74: YouTube V. Suppressors & Tropic Thunder

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 74! TFBTV has long been a staple of The Firearm Blog brand, however, over the years our humble little YouTube channel has not only seen some pretty amazing growth but it’s also come under attack several times by YouTube itself. Just before right around the time SHOT Show 2023 started, YouTube started seemingly giving channel strikes. These strikes were taking place sometimes so close together that entire YouTube channels were shut down overnight with very little that their owners could do to react to the situation. One of this week’s podcasts focuses on YouTube’s inconsistent and frankly annoying procedure when it comes to moderating silencer content on their platform. If you’ve had enough of that, we’ve also got a great and light-hearted episode of The Armourer’s Bench podcast featuring one of my favorite films, Tropic Thunder. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s roundup of gun podcast content.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #55: Katarina with Falco Holsters

Gun law, gun culture, and gun businesses from overseas never cease to fascinate me simply because they are somehow thriving in the fairly unfriendly territory when it comes to firearms. Falco Holsters is a holster manufacturing company born out of the rich hunting culture of the country of Slovakia and although they originally started out just making leather falconry gloves, the company has rapidly grown to be one of the largest European holsters manufacturers featuring designs and styles for virtually any handgun on the current market. Our guest Katarina also explains to us today some of the unique gun laws that Slovakia has (such as their Shall Issue CCW laws), and how some of the hardships we’re experiencing over here in the USA are shared by the firearms owners of Slovakia.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #54: The 2022 IPSC World Shoot with Chun

One of the things I don’t get to do often enough is talk to shooters from other parts of the globe. Miles V (our guest from a couple of weeks ago) who has spent a lot of time in Thailand recently introduced me to Chun who was able to participate in the 2022 IPSC World Shoot which was hosted in his home country this year in Pattaya, Thailand. Getting to talk to shooters and competitors from other parts of the globe is really eye-opening because I’m often quite surprised by just how much talent and dedication exists in countries where firearms laws aren’t nearly as permissive as they are in the United States. Today our guest Chun helps us recap the 2022 IPSC Handgun World Shoot XIX, some of his gear preferences, as well as what some of his plans are as far as competing goes down the road in 2023.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #53: Spencer with HUSH Holsters

Last week we had the opportunity to break the story on an innovative new holster specifically specialized to work with virtually any handgun/suppressor combo as long as it has a TLR1 weapon light attached to it. I was able to get the owner of HUSH Holsters and designer of the HUSH, Spencer, on the podcast to talk about his design, his driving motive behind producing the new holster, and some of his thoughts on what materials and design choices he made to make it work for him and other people who like to shoot suppressed handguns at the range.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #52: Former Navy SEAL Travis Kennedy

A couple of weeks back TFBTV’s Hop and I had a chance to head out with the good folks from Smith & Wesson to get some range training with two very experienced firearms instructors. The first of those was the legendary Jerry Miculek who is well-known both as a speed shooter and a competitive shooter. In addition to Jerry’s training course, we were also able to learn from Travis Kennedy, a former Navy SEAL and current firearms instructor at his own training company, Kennedy Defensive Solutions. Travis’ training heavily focuses on beginner-level fundamentals and safety so that people who come to his class can become safe and efficient with their rifles and pistols. Travis also has advanced combined carbine and pistol courses for those who have a grasp on the fundamentals, and want to get some more curated high-intensity training using Travis’ experience as a NAVY SEAL, as well as a former Federal law enforcement officer.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #51: Dave with the Safariland Group

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #50: Catching Up with Miles V.

Longtime readers and viewers of TFB and TFBTV will know Miles V fairly well. Miles is most well known for covering a lot of older firearms, their history, how they were used, as well as who they were used by. Miles is also fairly well known for just how well-traveled he is and has brought us some of the best coverage of foreign firearms markets, industries, and cultures available on the web. Miles is the co-creator of the Silah Report, which is a blog and intelligence network that researches and reports on firearms in the Middle East and North African regions of the globe. Miles used to be a frequent contributor to TFBTV and has also written for TFB, Small Arms Review, Small Arms Defense Journal, RECOIL Magazine, and many other online and print firearms media. It’s been a few years since we’ve had Miles on the podcast so I thought it would be good for us to get caught up and see where he’s been and what he has been up to the last year or so. In today’s episode, Miles gives us an insider’s perspective on the War in Ukraine including what kind of arms and gear fighters have access to and the general state of the conflict. Please welcome Miles back to TFB’s Behind The Gun Podcast!

TFB Podcast Roundup 68: AI Gun Detection & Home Defense Guns

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 68! We’re now in the home stretch for Thanksgiving 2022 – my favorite time of the year – and I’ve personally got a lot of travel lined up so that means I’ll be dipping back into my deep pocket of favorite firearms podcasts for all of my flights, drives, and layovers. Late last week I came across a classic gun YouTuber (Sootch00) who happened to find his way onto the Vickers Tactical Podcast with a crossover being done by my good buddy Clint Morgan from Classic Firearms. We’ll also be hearing from the great folks at the Vortex Nation podcast who have brought on Garand Thumb (Mike) to talk about his experience with the XM-157 Next Generation Squad Weapon, as well as some of his personal history and how he met his camera guy Micah. I’ve also gathered a handful of more topical podcasts covering concealed carry methods, types of firearms recommended by some for home defense duty, and an up-and-coming AI Technology that can identify guns being carried on people, and whether or not this is a good or a bad thing as a whole. Buckle up, strap in, sit back and relax as you slide into Thanksgiving 2022 with some good ole’ gun podcast listening.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #49: Joel with the Rock Island Auction Company

The Rock Island Auction Company was established in 1993 by Pat Hogan and has since grown to be one of the most well-respected and well-known names in the firearms industry for firearms auctions and other militaria collectibles and curios. Rock Island dedicates a considerable amount of time, and resources to acquiring new and old collectibles alike for their auctions, but does a lot of the behind-the-scenes work in researching each piece to asses not only its physical value but historical value as well. In the past, you’ve seen some pretty high-profile auctions featured here on TFB like the recent one featuring Han Solo’s DL-44 blaster pistol from the movie Star Wars (sold for over $1M USD). Today I bring on Joel from the Rock Island Auction Company to hear about their upcoming Premier Auction #87, as well as some of Joel’s personal favorite auctions from the past and some of the trends he’s noticed about the firearm collecting world during his tenure with RIAC.
