TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #79: Training Trends with Mo from Raven Wing Limited

Getting solid firearms training has simultaneously become easier than ever but also more difficult than ever. While there are a ton of great training companies out there, for every good one there are probably half a dozen other ones peddling either unsafe or ineffectual training for their customers. Mo, Raven Wing Limited, and the network of trainers that they’ve managed to collaborate with are some of the best in the business and offer a wide variety of training ranging from fairly basic firearms manipulation skills to advanced pistol and carbine courses, as well as private consultations and even night vision courses. Based out of Los Angeles California, you’d think that Raven Wing would face a lot of competition but in fact, it is quite the opposite: Raven Wing often brings in other trainers and hosts them to bring both their customers more refined training from living legends like Scott Jedlinski from the Modern Samurai Project, Tim Herron Shooting, or JJ Racaza who you might remember being on TFBTV several times. Today I’ve brought on Mo to talk about some of the most pronounced training trends he’s noticed in the firearms world today and what times of guns, optics, and holsters people are using to train for competition and self-defense nearly a quarter of the way through the 21st century.

TFB Podcast Roundup 96: Sun's Out, Guns Out, Earbuds In!

I’ve taken to listening to a few podcasts in the background at the range by myself when I’m getting things set up or torn down and cleaned up. One of my favorite things to listen to recently is a lot of talk by guys like Ben Stoeger, Scott Jelinski, and other professional shooters to pick up little tips and methods that they use in their own successful shooting careers. This week we’ve brought you a wider variety of episodes to cover everything from shooting technique to some of today’s more hot-button issues surrounding the gun industry and its constantly changing landscape. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast listening.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #78: Patrick O with TFBTV

The TFBTV crew is a small but mighty one that I’m proud to be a member of. One of our newest videographers and editors, Patrick O, is here today to tell us all about himself and how he ended up joining the TFBTV crew! Patrick actually has a pretty extensive background with filming and photographing around firearms as he worked closely as a military photographer with lots of special forces units during their exercises. Most of his work can be found on DVIDS (Defense Visual Information Distribution Service) but quite honestly his best work has been his editing, photo, and video work he’s done for TFBTV, TFB, and AllOutdoor.com (I might be a little biased with that statement). Either way, please give a warm welcome to someone who has been working with us for a better part of a year now, Patrick O of TFBTV.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #77: Operation Wide Receiver with Author Mike Detty

On today’s episode of TFB’s Behind The Gun Podcast, I’m speaking with Mike Detty, author of the book “Operation Wide Receiver” who details his experiences with the corruption and lies behind the infamous ATF gun walking scandal the book is titled after, as well as the subsequent “Operation Fast and Furious.” I recently met Mike at a Gunsite event in his home state of Arizona. Mike wasn’t very upfront about it at first but as soon as someone else mentioned his book, I immediately asked him about it and learned that he was actually involved in a precursor event to Operation Fast and Furious – Operation Wide Receiver. In today’s podcast, Mike details his experiences as he played his role as a legitimate FFL while moonlighting as an ATF informant during the operation. Mike also details why he eventually decided to do his part to expose this operation which eventually led to the far more infamous Operation Fast and Furious. Join us today as Mike gives us a few detailed explanations from his book, which quite honestly reads more like an action thriller than a retelling of actual events. If you’re interested in checking out his book, it can be found on Amazon for about $13. In the meantime, please sit back and enjoy the exciting first-hand accounts that Mike Detty has to share with us today on TFB’s Behind The Gun Podcast.

TFB Podcast Roundup 94: Competition and Anti-Drone Ammo

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 94! As summer has marched on I’ve been spending a lot of time in the woods with an AK and a Glock practicing in advance of this year’s Finnish Brutality competition. However, aside from the brutality that awaits me in Finland, I can’t help but think about their neighboring country, Russia, and how the conflict between them and Ukraine has shown the world just how complex and widespread drone usage has become in modern conflicts. Naturally, my curiosity and mindset lead me down a specific path on the internet and that’s why this week a lot of our episodes focus mostly on Competition, as well as a cool episode by our friends over at The Gun Collective Podcast about some pretty wild alternative ammunition types including Anti-Drone ammunition. So as always sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #76: Scott with GATORZ Eyewear

GATORZ Eyewear is most well-known for producing aluminum-framed ballistic-rated eyewear for shooters. While they fetch a pretty high asking price, they also give back a lot of that investment in their durability and smart design choices. GATORZ spends a lot of time, research, and resources developing each new set of eyewear that they come out with to make sure that it will not just stand the test of time, but also any impacts you might be unfortunate enough to encounter at the range. Today I’ve brought on Scott Melton of GATORZ Eyewear to tell us all the advantages behind GATORZ’s extensive line of both ballistic-rated and ANSI-rated protective eyewear, including a brand new offering that has been three years in the making and just released last week – Blastshield. Bastshield is a new shield-style pair of ballistic eyewear that gives you a near-unobstructed view downrange and also features zero optical shift despite the heavy curvature of the lens. Today Scott tells us all about the thought and reworking that went into this new pair of high-end safety glasses for shooters. Please welcome Scott from GATORZ Eyewear to the program!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #75: Wolverine 5K Tactical Adventure Race

Over the year I’ve really gotten addicted to trying out different types of firearm competitions. While I’ve dabbled in some of the more well-known competition spheres, USPSA, Multi-Gun, and Steel Challenge, I’ve also strayed off the beaten path and found something even better – ones that let you run around in expensive gear with your friends. One such race I’ve yet to try that falls into this category is the Wolverine 5K. The Wolverine 5K is a Red Dawn-inspired “Tactical Adventure Race” that incorporates aspects of not just shooting, but moving with your squad, mountaineering, and some complex problem and puzzle-solving skills. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with one squad who participated in this year’s Wolverine 5K, and we’ll be hearing from Philip, Brent, and Tyler as they describe to us their experiences at the 2023 Wolverine 5K Tactical Adventure Race.

TFB Podcast Roundup 91: More Easy Firearm Listening

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 91! It’s refreshing to see the online gun community getting back to actual discussions on niche firearm topics rather than constantly worrying about the latest drama taking place within the firearms industry. I know a couple of weeks back, one such story became so big that we even covered it here twice on TFB, several podcasts have even talked about it since then. Personally, I find podcasts to be an invaluable source of entertainment, especially during long drives or flights. They provide the perfect backdrop for my travels and allow me to stay up to date with the rest of the firearms industry that I might not interact with as much. Hopefully this week you can find something that interests you and learn something, or catch up on general firearms news yourself. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcasts!

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #74: What is NAAGA?

On a recent trip out to the legendary Gunsite Academy to check out some of Stoeger’s handguns (yes, Stoeger makes handguns), I had the fortunate opportunity to make a lot of new friends including some of today’s guests from the National African American Gun Association. Like other great firearms advocacy organizations nationwide, NAAGA seeks to promote firearms ownership for all Americans regardless of their religious, political, social, and racial backgrounds. While NAAGA does engage in some political activity centered specifically around pro-2nd Amendment rights, what NAAGAs main goal is, is to empower and educate the African American community in the matters of gun ownership, safety, and self-defense through a combination of training, community support, strict safety standards for its members and instructors, as well as a healthy dose of cultural inspiration from the rich legacy of gun ownership that African Americans have. So today we’ll be able to hear from my new friends Myloreal, Shanea, Akeithea, and Jaron to talk about what exactly their organization does, what its ultimate goals are, and what they as a team have been up to to provide their members with a valuable organization they can make new friends in.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #71: Woodland Brutality 2023 Recap with Tom S

A lot of you will be familiar with InRange TV’s series of Brutality matches held across the nation throughout the year. Brutality matches quickly became my favorite type of firearms competition as they blend a good variety of skill, physical endurance, and problem-solving, along with a great environment to test your gear in to create a truly rewarding firearms event. I personally covered Woodland Brutality 2022 last year where I participated in the event along with today’s podcast guest, my good friend Tom Symonds. Tom is an aficionado of military firearms and equipment as well as a talented artist (some of you who watch TFBTV will have seen his artwork on the wall behind James Reeves’ usual set). Since I personally wasn’t able to attend this year’s match held at the Echo Valley Training Center in West Virginia, I’m bringing Tom on to retell his experience. So buckle up, grab a drink, and prepare to experience a Woodland Brutality 2023 recap from the perspective of my friend Tom Symonds.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #70: Gun Shop Talk with Alex R from Guns.com

Guns.com is a well-known online firearms retailer that provides an extensive selection of firearms, ammunition, and accessories for gun enthusiasts and collectors. Established in 2011, Guns.com has quickly become a popular destination for gun owners and enthusiasts looking for all sorts of firearms including rare or even discontinued items. However, what really sets Guns.com apart is that the company basically gives you access to not just their warehouse inventory, but the entire inventory of their outlet gun shops. What’s more, is that Guns.com also certifies used guns so that you don’t have to worry about buying a mystery meat secondhand gun off of an auction site only to find out you’ve been sold a lemon. Guns.com and our guest today, Mr. Alex Reville are dedicated to providing a reliable and secure platform for firearm sales while promoting more local businesses like small gun shops and pawn shops rather than big box stores and distributors. Today Alex explains to us how Guns.com works, and how you might even be able to sell some of your own guns on there too if you’re looking to exchange some of your inventory for cash! TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #69: Nick Chen's Ass Fiasco feat. Brad w/ BFG

A lot of you will remember a couple of months back Nick C’s ass suffered quite a traumatic range event. Many lessons were learned that day, most notably, not to violate basic range safety rules. The biggest takeaway for me from that day was just the sheer value of simple training. That’s why today we’ve brought on both TFB’s Nick C as well as Brad Gilpin from Blue Force Gear to talk about the accident and the specific training that allowed all of us to respond to the injury quickly, efficiently, and without panic. Brad Gilpin is the Director of Medical Programming at Blue Force Gear and is a prior law enforcement professional who has served at both the state and federal levels. He was a founding member of the USBP BORSTAR unit serving as Assistant Team Leader / Team Medic and has been involved in advocating tactical medicine skills for LEOs since long before it was cool to do so.

Obviously, this piece of legislation has had a major impact on the business in a number of ways. TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #67: Preaching the Gospel of Red Dot w/ Scott Jedlinski

A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to go to a media event featuring a lot of pistol red dot shooting. Scott and MSP travel around the country to train both civilians and law enforcement in the effective employment and use of pistols equipped with red dots. Scott’s company offers everything from hosted classes for larger groups of people and even has 1 on 1 instruction available for those who want a more customized class. Scott has a lot to say about red dots and shooting handguns and today I got to pick his brain and ask him some questions that those who want to take his classes most frequently ask him. TFB Podcast Roundup 84: Podcats to Clean Your Guns To

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 84. Spring is usually the time when I get around to going through my entire inventory to check on the general condition of my guns and equipment. During this time pretty much every gun gets a good wipe down, but I also move around some of my accessories and optics to other guns for upcoming reviews or shoots. Either way, while I love the sound of roll pins flying across the room, and bolt carriers slamming home, I usually like to have something else to listen to so I can pass the time. This week I’ll be sharing some podcasts I think you can enjoy while you catch up on some routine firearms maintenance.

TFB Podcast Roundup 83: Everyone is Worried About the Future

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 83. While TFB maintains a pretty staunch “no-politics” mentality, we undoubtedly support the 2nd Amendment, not only is it a core part of our jobs, but I also think it goes without saying that all of us here at TFB and TFBTV don’t want those inalienable rights to go anywhere for any reason at all. This also applies to much of the rest of the Gun Industry as can be demonstrated with a quick web search of popular topics as of late. With recent happenings in the news across the country that are being pumped by both mainstream media and social media sources, I get the vibe that the general mood in the room for gun enthusiasts is that we’re all under attack again and we probably are. However, this is nothing new that we haven’t seen before and the path ahead can often always look bleak while you’re in the thick of it. I think it’s very important to stay informed and active in your areas of interest, but you shouldn’t just fill your mind with the constant 24-hour news cycle, even when it pertains to firearms – it’ll just make you go crazy. So while we’ve included some discussions on this topic for this week’s TFB Podcast Roundup, there are plenty of other no-politics topics here too to keep things balanced out. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast listening!

TFB Podcast Roundup 82: Delta Force EDC and Industry Drama

Hello everyone and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 82! As usual, we have a good lineup of great podcasts this week for you to listen to while you clean, drive to work, drive home, reload, or do other menial tasks that are just much more tolerable when there is something else to listen to. This week’s headliner is from the guys over at the Shawn Ryan Show. Shawn Ryan is a former Navy SEAL and CIA Contractor who delivers a wide variety of content including videos and podcasts. His recent podcast with Delta Force Operator Kyle Morgan about his EDC selection caught my eye so I thought I’d share that one first. As for the rest of the podcasts featured this week, you’re in for a special treat if you’ve been following a lot of the firearms industry drama that has been taking place in the courtroom – I was able to bring on an Intellectual Property Lawyer to the TFB Behind The Gun Podcast to give everyone a basic understanding of how and why these types of court cases take place and how they might develop over time. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast listening.
