New Impact Sport In-Ear Hearing Protection from Howard Leight

I’m a huge fan of in-ear hearing protection as opposed to over-the-ear hearing protection. While ear muffs have much better sound mitigation capabilities, I just can’t stand the heat and sweat they generate on a hot day. Howard Leight has just introduced their very own offering of in-ear noise canceling hearing protection with the New Howard Leight Impact Sport In-Ear models.

Guns for Women: Let's Get to What Really Matters

Recently I was asked to crank out yet another ”best guns for women” article. I cringe every time I see that sort of title, because the truth is, guns don’t care what sex you are. In more than eight years of instructing and 15 years of daily carry, I’ve learned (and it’s confirmed by US military research) that there is little predictability between gender and the dimensions of hands or fingers. Four of my female students prefer the largest of the modular backstraps on their pistols. Two male students have fingers so short that they struggle to reach the trigger on a sub-compact Glock 43. And if you think that color is all a woman is looking for in a gun, please don’t waste precious time here.

Concealed Carry Corner: Carry Positions Ranked Best To Worst

Often times I will get a number of questions about a certain type of carry style. Whether it’s carrying in a pocket or a shoulder holster, there will always be pros and cons to each method of carrying a concealed firearm. Every rating is based on my personal experiences as well as a number of colleagues that all collectively came down to this list. It’s perfectly acceptable to disagree with the rating and I would love to have a discussion in the comments at the end of the article. Let’s dive deeper into the carry positions ranked best to worst.

Welcome back to the Underground Arms Watch. The first week of June saw a number of seizures of the FGC-9, the widely reported on 3D printable 9mm carbine released by Deterrence Dispensed last year. The example below was one of two seized from a ‘factory’ operating in Tampere, Finland which was uncovered during raids on addresses connected to criminal groups making use of the compromised encrypted chat network known as AN0M.

Boat Guns: Top 5 Long Guns For Boating Defense

We’ve all heard the tired “boating accident” trope, and it was funny while it lasted, but in all seriousness, boating season is upon us, and a lot can go wrong on the water, so let’s take a look at boat guns. The term boat guns is an aquatic adaptation of the term “ truck gun” or “trunk gun,” and generally refers to keeping a rifle or shotgun handy for self-defense, or sometimes for impromptu hunting ( or fishing?). The concept of keeping a rifle or shotgun in a vehicle is usually quite controversial since vehicles can be easily broken into. Another source of contention is that some people question the ability to simply drive away in the time it takes to retrieve a long gun from a storage compartment. Despite all that, there have been instances of people needing to defend themselves from a boat, so we’ll take a look at the top 5 guns you should consider for a boat gun.

The New Navigator Tech Pouch from High Speed Gear

I’ve been experimenting a lot with my plate carrier and one of the things I never quite understood was those pouches that were meant to hold your smartphone on the front part of your chest. I know a couple outfits that make the devices bill them for use with blue force tracking applications but I’ve never seen it in action. High Speed Gear has just launched their own smartphone holder called the Navigator Tech Pouch which services as a convenient tray for accessing the touchscreen on your smartphone without having to sacrifice one hand to hold the device.

TFB Review: The Lightweight and Low-Profile AXIL GS Digital 1 Earplugs

With advances in technology over the years, we have developed a lot of improved safety equipment and practices. I doubt anyone 100 years ago would have considered using hearing protection for everyday shooting (heck seatbelts weren’t even standard till 1968). From lead-free ammunition, more durable eye protection, advances in backstop decontamination, and state-of-the-art air filtration equipment, shooting has become a much less health-hazardous endeavor. Keeping your ears protected is still one of the most important safety practices in my book which is why I’m a huge fan of widespread suppressor use and the proper application of hearing protection based on the situation. AXIL, a leader in state-of-the-art hearing protection sent me a pair of their “Ghost Stryke”  GS Digital 1 Earplugs for review and today we’ll see how they perform under a variety of shooting situations.

Memorial Day DEALS on Guns and Gear Today Through 5/31

Before we dispense with the traditional Memorial Day Deals posting I’d like to take a moment here to talk a little bit about Memorial Day. This will be a quick reminder of what this federal holiday is all about. Memorial Day-like observances have been going on as far back as the American Civil War era. Both Confederate and Union soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice were honored by their fellow countrymen. While the original Decoration Day was a purely Union memorial tradition for its fallen service members, various Union memorial traditions were eventually merged together and Memorial Day was expanded to honor all Americans who died while serving within United States Military Service.

AK-50? Not Quite! AK-50 Lite by Brandon Herrera

TFB friend Brandon Herrera, aka The AK Guy, started several years ago the “crazy” project of manufacturing a .50 BMG AK-based rifle, the AK-50. The project is still ongoing and, with Brandon’s internet fame, more and more people started questioning if it will ever reach completion. Brandon decided to jokingly offer a treat to his impatient fans, by building the AK-50 Lite in .50 Beowulf.

Fieldcraft Survival's GunFighter Carbine 1 Course

Over the last year, we have seen a bit of a hard road for gun owners in the United States. Ammo prices have soared from what they were even 18 months ago and ranges aren’t near as full anymore. It’s been a real struggle for people to get out and shoot on a regular basis, which is exactly why I decided to hop in my truck and head to Cleveland to take the Fieldcraft Survivals Carbine course a couple of weekends ago. This was the first carbine course I have taken from them and they have a deeper approach to training than other companies. Let’s dive into my experience at Fieldcraft Survival’s GunFighter Carbine 1 Course.
