Two staples within the Springfield Armory handgun line-up are their micro-compact Hellcat for everyday carry (EDC) as well as their full-frame XD-M (Xtreme Duty Match). While they can be likened to each like a big-little brother relationship, if you were ever in the market for a threaded barrel for either of them, you had to go swimming in the aftermarket parts world to hopefully find one with a good fitment. Now, Springfield Armory is offering XD-M threaded barrels for their 4.5″ models and Hellcat threaded barrels for their standard 3″ offering.

You can never predict how popular a new firearms design will be. While one Austrian pistol, Glock, became more popular than any handgun in the history of humanity, another Austrian pistol, the Steyr M series has been enjoying limited popularity throughout the years. At the IDEX exhibition, Middle Eastern customers had a chance to see the 4th generation of the Steyr handgun, C9-A2 MF.

SIG SAUER‘s M17 and M18 pistols have served as America’s official service sidearms for six years, having been officially adopted as the winner of the US Army’s XM17 Modular Handgun System competition in 2017. The respective full-size and shorter carry-length models replaced the Beretta M9, which had been in service since 1985 after replacing the venerable 1911. Military units have been gradually phasing in the M17 and M18 over the last few years, with the company celebrating their 100,000th handgun delivery to the DoD in 2019. Now a special matched pair of these handguns are being auctioned for charity, benefiting the military-supporting Sterling Promise Foundation. This organization honors Staff Sergeant Scott Sterling, who succumbed to cancer in April 2021 after an illustrious US Army Special Operations career. A January 2023 report from CNBC claims that gun companies are experiencing a decline in demand for firearms. According to the report, in 2022, gun sales dropped by 11% compared to the previous year. Publicly-traded gun companies like Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger & Company, have reported a decline in sales and revenue for several quarters in a row. For example, Smith & Wesson’s net sales for the first quarter of 2023 were $131.6 million, down from $174 million in the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, Sturm, Ruger & Company’s net sales for the same period fell by 16.4% to $110.8 million.

FN America, the US subsidiary of Belgium’s FN Herstal, has been in operation for more than four decades. Its current guise is the result of a merger of the two separate prior iterations, FN Manufacturing and FNH USA. Beyond the Belgian and American operations, the company maintains a UK branch as well. Today, FN America is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, and their manufacturing facility near Columbia, South Carolina primarily handles military arms, such as the M249 SAW and M240 machine guns. Now FN America has announced that they are expanding to a second domestic manufacturing operation. This new plant will be located in Liberty, SC, which is about two hours’ drive northwest of Columbia. The Estonian Defence Forces have selected their new 8.6mm (.338) precision rifle. Following the recent news of Finland and Sweden’s selection of a raft of Sako firearms, Estonia has signed agreements to procure the M10 as their new precision rifle.

The British Army has selected several Aimpoint optics solutions for various heavy weapons. According to Aimpoint, the FCS13-RE Fire Control System with TH-60 thermal clip-on has been selected to fulfill the SWESS-Heavy Mature Project requirement for optics for support weapons including the M2 Browning and 40mm grenade machine guns. The Aimpoint CompM4 has been selected for use with the new 84mm Carl Gustaf recoilless weapons which the British Army has just procured. The CompM4s with 3X magnifiers will fulfill the SWESS-Light Battlesight Project.

On the same day Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed House Bill 1240 into law, the Second Amendment Foundation and Firearms Policy Coalition filed suit challenging it. HB 1240 is an “assault weapon” ban that has drawn national attention for the speed with which it passed and for the breadth of its restrictions. Armaspec has a new Ambidextrous Safety Selector called the Fulcrum. It’s intended for use on the AR10 or the AR15 platforms. The Beretta 90 series of pistols has continued to be updated with features that users have been looking for, including the most recent upgrade of coming cut for Red Dot Optics from the factory. While the factory optics cut and plate system is what consumers have been asking for, it left the optic a bit higher over the barrel than some were hoping for. Firearms designed by Florian Kohli of the Swiss company KUGS are always fascinating with many unique and unusual design solutions. A couple of KUGS guns we saw earlier are the FATBOY single-shot rifle that has a very simple design with a cannon-like sliding breech and the HD410 18-shot 410 bore pepperbox. SIG SAUER first introduced their CROSS rifle in 2020. The original AICS-fed CROSS bolt-action is available in .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .277 Fury with either a 16″ or 18″ barrel length. Since releasing the original, SIG has also come out with a PRS model which takes the barrel length up to 24″. Now they’ve announced a new addition to the series, called the CROSS STX. This newest model takes a middle ground in terms of barrel length, measuring 20″, and offers some other differentiating features such as a full-length 20 MOA top Picatinny rail and an SLH/SLX suppressor-ready QD flash hider.
