When I hear the name Speer, I think of duty ammunition, probably due to the type of shooting I do. However, those who take fewer shots in more rugged environments equate the name with one-shot stops on their prey. Equally known in the hunting and long-range world, Remington has joined forces with Speer, its sister brand. The Speer Impact bullet is now available for the first time in Remington’s Premier Long Range Ammunition.

The Rimfire Report: Is Federal Automatch Secretly the Best Bulk Ammo?

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, shooting sports, histories, and ammunition! Last week on Rimfire Report we talked about accurizing your stock Ruger 10/22 rifle. There are a lot of different ways to approach accurizing such a classic design. With probably nearly as much aftermarket support as the AR-15 platform, the 10/22 is one that will probably stick around for a very long time and probably see even more small innovations designed around it than we see out there today. This week I want to talk about volume – specifically the amount you shoot in a day. Even though rimfire is less expensive than shooting centerfire guns, when you’re practicing for an event and throwing hundreds of rounds downrange, those pennies still add up. Today we’ll be talking about what I think might be one of the better types of ammunition (at least for some guns) within the rimfire firearm world – Federal Automatch 40-grain 22LR bulk ammunition.

TFB Review: The Ruger SFAR – An Almost Perfect Small Frame AR-10

The Ruger SFAR or Small Frame Auto-Loading Rifle was released earlier this year to the pleasure of many firearms enthusiasts including many readers of TFB. Judging from the initial responses in the comments from the product announcement, many of you seem interested in a lightweight small-frame AR-10 for hunting, and regular range use with the smaller frame of the SFAR being ideal for carrying afield and the reduced weight making it much more portable. However, I think the biggest draw that got a lot of readers excited about the SFAR was the price. The Ruger SFAR retails for an MSRP of just $1,229 for either the 20″ barrel or 16″ barrel configuration. This makes the SFAR one of the most affordable lightweight small-frame .308 semi-auto rifles on the market (many have compared the SFAR to the POF Rogue). We could go back and forth all day about pricing, feature sets, and use cases for this rifle, but what about its performance? I’ve had my own copy of the 16″ Ruger SFAR for a couple of months now and I’ve poured hundreds of rounds of .308 through it and also had the benefit of having two other TFB contributors who have the same rifle give me their performance data, meaning as opposed to a sample size of just one, we’re getting to see the performance of 3 different copies of the same rifle, which should give all of you the info you need to make an informed decision as to whether or not the Ruger SFAR is the right choice for you.

Kalashnikov USA Debuts Their New 124 grain 7.62x39mm Ammunition

Feeding your AKs and surplus SKS rifles you bought ages ago used to be a pretty affordable affair. Most of the time you could pick up entire spam cans of 7.62x39mm ammunition to go with your freshly purchased rifle. However, a combination of global circumstances has inflated the price of 7.62x39mm ammunition, leading to much more expensive and a lot harder to get imported into the USA. That is why Kalashnikov USA is proud to introduce their new 124-grain lead core steel cased 7.62x39mm ammunition which is available for purchase now directly from KUSA.

The Rimfire Report: Why Your 10/22 Rifle is Inaccurate

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various firearms, shooting sports, ammunition types, and history! Last week on The Rimfire Report we talked about the historical significance of what was collectively known as gallery guns – basically versions of rifles and pistols that could somewhat safely be fired indoors for recreational purposes. In a lot of ways this sport lives on today in the form of air rifles in the garage or back yard at home, or sometimes even at carnivals in the form of full-auto air guns with a chance to win prizes. No matter how you approach plinking, it’s still fun and I suppose even the type of firearm (or air rifle) that you use is still irrelevant, sometimes people just want to have fun while shooting. On the flip side of things, some people are always looking for that extra bit of accuracy they can squeeze out of their rifles and pistols. Ruger 10/22 rifles aren’t exactly known for being “accurate” rifles. In fact, precision shooters or those with exceedingly high standards might go as far as to call them inaccurate.  That’s why today we’re going to go over a couple of basic reasons why your factory 10/22 22LR rifle or Charger Pistol may not be producing the groups you expected, and how you might go about improving that accuracy without spending a couple thousand dollars on a precision rifle.

The Rimfire Report: The Brief History of Gallery Guns

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, shooting sports, ammunition types, and history! Last week we checked out the MaddMacs Precision MK4 Carbine. The MK4 Carbine was a blast to shoot but carried along with it a pretty steep learning curve due to just how light the rifle is. Since the initial review, I’ve opted to swap out my TANDEMKROSS Kraken MKIV lower in lieu of a factory Ruger MKIV lower – this is because I usually shoot two matches at a time and this allows me to participate in both Rimfire Pistol Open (RFPO) and Rimfire Rifle Open (RFRO) without having to bring extra tools to deal with the Kraken. If you haven’t checked out the MK4 Carbine yet, you should head on over to the MaddMacs Precision Tactical to check out the MK4 Carbine, as well as some of its other cool rimfire parts and components. Shooting the MK4 Carbine a lot over the last couple of weeks got me thinking about some of the other types of target shooting we’ve seen become popular in the United States over the years. If you rewind back far enough, you’ll eventually encounter something called a “Gallery Gun.” Gallery Guns are known by many names but put simply the class of firearm mostly consists of rifles and pistols chambered in .22 Short or 6mm Flobert and were initially used for indoor target shooting. Today we’ll check out the unique history of this type of rimfire firearm and observe how it evolved into a fairly familiar recreational shooting sport many of us participated in as children without even realizing it.
