You read that title right, Expansion Industries have just announced that they will be opening up a new facility in what used to be the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant. The new facility will be located near the company’s headquarters in Carrollton, TX. With the last couple of years being nearly hopeless for handloaders in terms of primer availability, this new facility may prove to be not only extremely lucrative for Expansion Industries but extremely beneficial to the reloading community which should now have another primer selection option over the big four existing producers.

At the SHOT Show 2022 Industry Day at the Range, MKS Supply brought the recently released Barnaul subsonic 9x19mm ammunition and offered to test it in a suppressed full-auto 9mm AR … few things are more fun than that! Let’s see what specs this subsonic 9mm ammunition has.

True Velocity has announced that their composite-cased 6.8 TVC cartridge that was developed for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) program is approved by SAAMI and will soon become commercially available. Along with the commercial release of the cartridge, Beretta, Daniel Defense and Lewis Machine & Tool will offer firearms chambered in this cartridge.

We’ve know for a while that Beretta was partnered with General Dynamics on their NGSW submission – the bullpup RM277. Well GD have divested to True Velocity and Lone Star Future Weapons but Beretta have confirmed their continuing involvement in the project.

Bishop Ammunition & Firearms has introduced the .475 Bishop Short Magnum cartridge back at SHOT Show 2019. It is a .474-caliber rebated rim proprietary cartridge designed to fit single stack in AR-10 pattern magazines and as stated by the company was (still probably is) the most powerful chambering for the AR-10 platform. At SHOT Show 2022 Industry Day at the Range, Faxon Firearms and Q introduced a joint project – Q Fix bolt action rifles and AR-10 style gas guns chambered in 8.6 Blackout. The cartridge is developed by Q and the contribution of Faxon Firearms to the project is the barrels. Let’s take a closer look.

Winchester Ammunition had several new varieties available at Shot Show 2022 Industry Range Day. The USA Ready Defense 9mm +P 124-grain load was present in quantity. The HEX-VENT polymer insert aids in expansion by “channeling material flow” as it passes through the target. Winchester’s promotional materials advertise over 12″ of penetration and 95% weight retention. Several blocks of ballistic gel were on hand and seemed to back up those penetration claims.

I’ll be 100% honest. I knew nothing about the .327 Federal Magnum caliber until I saw the TFBTV video on the Smith & Wesson Model 327. The video intrigued me, sending me into a downward spiral of research. What I ultimately found is that there are several advantages that have led to more people carrying the caliber. The first shot heard around the world from the 2022 firearms industry is the announcement of the commercial availability of the SIG Sauer NGSW MCX-SPEAR. The MCX-SPEAR is the rifle in the final stages of selection for the Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) that will equip soldiers with new rifles, ammunition, optics, and suppressors. Prior to this announcement, SIG offered the MCX in both 5.56m and 300BLK in a AR-15 sized receiver.The SPEAR, initially offered in .277 FURY (6.8 x 51) is easily converted to both 7.62 NATO and 6.5 Creedmoor.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has awarded Winchester Ammunition a large contract for 9×19 mm ammunition in three out of four of their categories. The categories are Duty/Service (Micro),Training – Reduced Lead and Frangible, and below you can find which types of ammunition the agency chose.

The 6.5 PRC cartridge has found a home in the world of PRS competitions because of its flat-shooting properties. Federal Premium has decided to take it one step closer to the hunting realm. It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen a new handgun caliber hit the market but Federal is sprinting out of the gate of 2022 with their new 30 Super Carry cartridge. The new ammunition is intended by the Federal to be used as a superior concealed carry option that offers reloadable brass, greater magazine capacity than 9mm, the same muzzle energy as 9mm but with much better ballistics than 380 Auto.  Pricewise, 30 Super Carry looks to be about the same price or perhaps just slightly more expensive than comparable 115-grain 9mm ammunition.

The .357 Magnum caliber has earned a reputation as a man stopper. In the N64 Goldeneye, it was even capable of shooting through walls. Take that, General Ourumov! This reputation is well-deserved. Winchester has been awarded a contract to prepare to produce the ammunition for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapons. The type of the new 6.8mm ammunition manufactured at the Winchester-run Lake City Army Ammunition Plant depends on the winner of the ongoing, slightly-delayed, NGSW program.

Federal Ammunition has announced that the FBI has awarded them and Speer Ammunition in all four categories of its handgun ammunition bid – Service (Full Size), Service (Micro), Reduced-Lead Training, and Frangible. Three of these types of ammunition are manufactured in the Anoka, Minnesota facility. The other rounds will be made in Lewiston, Idaho.

Lehigh Defense specialize in the development and production of products for the ammunition and firearms industries. Their products range from contract manufacturing services to some of the most intriguing projectiles I have ever seen and used in my own 300 Blackout Honey Badger clone.  Wilson Combat has now acquired the Pennsylvania-based ammunition and bullet manufacturer Lehigh Defense.

Shooting clays out of the sky is very fun, but also valuable training for all kinds of shooters. While some shooters prefer a casual environment, competition is where some of the best shooters live. In a bit of disappointing news towards the end of this year, shooters can expect another set of rising ammunition and reloading component costs. Announced via a press release by Vista Outdoors, the umbrella of ammunition brands that the company has within its profile will see a set of ammunition and reloading component price increases in order to offset the rising cost of materials. Furthermore, Vista Outdoors announced that no new primer orders will be accepted until further notice due to such high demand.

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, ammunition, and sports. While a large share of the rimfire market is absolutely dominated by the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, other offerings have been developed in more recent times with one of the most modern rimfire cartridges being the tiny .17 HM2 (.17 Hornady Mach 2). 17 HM2 is a much smaller version of the .17 HMR cartridge that is closer in overall size to .22LR and is based on the .22 Stinger case versus the .22 WMR that is the parent case of .17 HMR. The tiny cartridge was first introduced in 2004 and has developed somewhat of a cult following for serious varmint hunters but doesn’t seem to generate must interest outside of that field. Today I want to discuss whether this relatively young rimfire cartridge will survive much longer or if we are seeing it go the way of 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum.

On the 21st of December 2021, the Italian Parliament has finally penned the word “end” on a decades-long national oddity: the ban of the 9×19 mm Luger. This comes as part of a package of amendments aimed to align Italian laws to the European Union’s. A step in the right direction, for once.
