Federal Premium Ammunition was started by Charles L Horn on April 27th, 1922 in Anoka Minnesota. Fast forward 100 years and Federal Premium is one of the most prolific ammunition manufacturers in the United States offering a full lineup of training, self-defense, hunting, and competition ammunition to its customers. In honor of this 100-year achievement, Federal Ammunition has announced the release of their special-edition 100th Anniversary Rifle Ammo Packaging featuring throwback designs circa 1963.

One of the most popular concealed carry cartridges has been added to the Speer Ammunition product line. The new 30 Super Carry Gold Dot ammunition is now available and will come in the typical 20-round boxes. The new 30 Super Carry Gold Dot joins the popular personal protection ammunition lineup with other popular options like the 115-grain 9mm Gold Dot and the 180-grain 40 S&W Gold Dot ammunition offerings. This new addition to the Speer ammunition line further expands the options that concealed carriers have when it comes to ammunition selection in their 30 Super Carry handguns.

Those who reload will know all too well the struggles we’ve faced over the last couple of years when it comes to finding primers for our home-rolled ammunition. Near the start of the global pandemic, a combination of factors led to a bum-rush on reloading components and while projectiles, powder, and press remained more or less plentiful, primers almost became extinct except for extremely inflated deals from predatory scalpers and of course primers going directly from the big four primer manufactures to all of the big ammunition plants. A while back we covered the announcement about their new primer production facility but many of you remained skeptical that Expansion Industries would just follow the same path that the big four did – ignoring customers like you and me and just focusing on large corporate contracts. Ballistics gel or ballistic gelatin is a fairly common and familiar substance that is often used to test the efficacy and performance of various projectile or bladed weapons. Ballistics gel is quite often used by independent persons and professionals alike to either test ammunition or view the effects of said ammunition on what amounts to a close simulation of human and animal tissue. After the infamous Miami Dade shootout, the FBI established a set of testing protocols to determine the performance of ammunition. It’s generally understood that on a bare “10% Ordnance Gelatin” block a bullet should penetrate no less than 12 and no more than 18 inches into the target otherwise it begins to lose points in the FBI’s complex formula for determining whether or not the ammunition is suitable for law enforcement applications.

Earlier this year American Marksman informed me they were importing Arsenal 7.62×39 from Bulgaria. In the wake of the Russian ammo import ban, this was music to my ears.  So in the midst of a great steel-cased ammo drought, American Marksman was kind enough to send over a couple hundred rounds of this freshly minted Bulgarian ammo for testing.

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This weekly series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various firearms, sports, ammunition, and trends. Last week we talked about the oddball Magnum Research Mountain Eagle 22LR pistol. The Mountain Eagle is an interesting piece and kind of blends in the best of worth worlds between high capacity, and lightweight design. The Mountain Eagle in my opinion might have been a little ahead of its time but unfortunately never really took off and was eventually discontinued by Magnum Research. Speaking of new things, the subject of this week is Norma’s relatively new Eco Power and Eco Speed lead-free 22LR ammunition. Today we’ll explore how they perform in a number of tests to give you guys a read on whether this ammunition might suit any of your rimfire needs.

The hottest new caliber on the market has just received another option in the form of Federal Ammunition’s new American Eagle 30 Super Carry load offered in a 100-grain FMJ configuration and in boxes of 50-rounds. 30 Super Carry has been quite controversial within the firearms market because of its claims of having a performance boost over .380 ACP while simultaneously giving regular 9mm users an increase in capacity in their guns.

Norma Precision Ammunition, a subsidiary of Swedish company RUAG Ammotec, will be setting up their headquarters, factory and distribution hubs in Chatham County, Georgia. The state’s governor, Brian Kemp, released a statement announcing the news on 11 April. The company shared the news on their Norma Shooting Facebook page saying “We’ve been calling Savannah “home” for a while now, but let’s make it official.”

I hate to bring up a sore subject for most of us but last year (2021) was a pretty rough one for firearms owners. When it came to finding ammunition, you were either stuck with depleting your hard-earned reserves, purchasing overpriced ammunition, or just not shooting at all. Despite this, the ammunition industry tried its best to keep up with demand, and apparently, CCI Blazer was the most frequently purchased handgun ammunition for last year according to a survey compiled by Southwick Associates and their “ Hunting & Shooting Participation and Equipment Purchase Consumer Tracking Study“.

We are coming up fast on the spring 2022 turkey season and Remington is here to give the hardcore turkey hunters out there the best they have to offer. Remington ammunition has just announced the addition of new tungsten and high-velocity loads with their new Magnum Turkey High Velocity and Premier TSS shotgun ammunition. This new ammunition should be on shelves and ready for order just in time to get your favorite Turkey shotgun loaded up to hunt.

Long-range shooting has become a popular sport for a lot of shooters and that extends to rimfire shooters like me. While standard velocity ammunition is often picked as the king of consistency for longer-range .22LR shooters, RWS Ammunition has a new offering in the way of their new R Plus Long Range cartridge for distances beyond what normal .22LR ammunition is capable of. RWS has accomplished this via specialized bullets specially loaded for distances of over 200 meters.

Arms of America, an importer and seller of Kalashnikov rifles, pistols and parts kits, has announced that it is supporting Ukraine with every case of Russian ammo sold. All proceeds from these sales will be donated directly to a Ukrainian charity. This is unsurprising given Arms of America’s founding by combat veterans as well as close ties to WBP Rogow of Poland.

The Next Generation Squad Weapon program has been a huge driver within the firearms industry on nearly all fronts. Firearms and ammunition manufacturers have all been submitting their best offerings to the United States government in order to gain a contract and one of the companies that might be most well known during this process is True Velocity. Beretta Holding continues its streak of acquisitions and consolidation on the market. After years of work in this direction, and months of rumors in the market, the Holding can officialize the first step of full acquisition of the Swiss ammunition manufacturer RUAG Ammotec.

While perusing the floor of IWA 2022 we came across a company that none of us had ever heard of before – Bioammo. With hunters, outdoorsmen, and shooters becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, Bioammo set out to make completely biodegradable ammunition that won’t leak toxic chemicals into our environment and eventually our very own food chain. Tungsten shot has been extremely popular in recent years for all sorts of hunting applications including Turkey hunting. In an effort to further expand their product lineup and coverage options for their customers, Fiocchi has just announced the introduction of their new Golden Turkey TSS loads for 12-gauge, 20-gauge, and 410 bore shotguns. These new shells should penetrate deep, produce dense patterns, and remain reliable in any conditions you find yourself in while turkey hunting.

One of the better pieces of news for Italian shooters last year was the release of 9mm Luger for sale to civilians. Until then, civilian gun owners had to be content with the commercial 9×21 mm caliber instead.
The changed situation naturally raised the question whether this would have a major impact on
shooters and firearms manufacturers in Italy.

AMMO Inc announced today that it would be offering one million rounds of small arms ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. AMMO Inc is not selling this ammunition but rather offering to donate it to the Ukrainian military after the company heard President Zelensky’s request for ammunition rather than a ride out of the country. AMMO Inc is most well known in the United States as a vertically integrated company of ammunition and firearms components as well as the new operator of the popular gun auction site GunBroker.com.

Defensive handgun ammunition has been receiving a lot of new attention lately with the recent introduction of the new 30 Super Carry cartridge. Despite the introduction of this new cartridge, companies like Norma Ammunition are continuing to offer concealed carriers new options for some more longstanding popular calibers like 9mm. Norma Ammunition’s latest offering is their new non-expanding NXD Defensive cartridge which relies not on expansion for its lethality, but rather a solid injection molded copper fluted projectile that transfers an extreme amount of energy into the target while simultaneously offering the user less recoil impulse to allow for faster follow up shots.

As we round the corner of the end of winter and start barreling into spring, it’s time to start sighting up turkeys. Having your shotgun patterned ahead of time with the right ammo can really simplify and streamline your next turkey hunt and that is why it might be a good idea to have some HEVI-Shot HEVI-18 TSS Turkey Loads at your side as you head out in search of your first gobbler of the season.

Two new load offerings have just been introduced by Federal Ammunition in the personal defense category including new HST 357 Magnum and 327 Federal Magnum. Both calibers have been popular choices for those who still choose to field a revolver for self-defense. Both new offerings will feature nickel-plated cases, specially engineered 104-grain, and 154-grain hollow point bullets, as well as high-performance primers for more consistent ignition. These new HST offerings join the ranks of other proven and popular self-defense loadings from federal including a 9mm Luger, 45 ACP, and the new 30 Super Carry.

Two new completely lead-free rimfire offerings are now available from Norma Ammunition. The company recently introduced the new Eco Speed-22 and Eco Power-22 rimfire offerings which both boast being the fastest .22LR cartridges on the market. The increased speed in combination with a 24-solid zinc projectile makes for a clean shooting, reliable and lethal .22LR cartridge. The two new cartridges are available now and offer slightly different characteristics depending on your end goal.

SAAMI has accepted several new rifle cartridges, including the 6.8 True Velocity Composite which pushes a 150-grain bullet to the velocity of 2,700 fps. You can check part of the layout in the schematics above. Hornady’s 6mm GT is another one as well as Weatherby’s 338 WBY RPM.

Compact and light, rifle caliber personal defense weapons (PDWs) are a compromise to pistol caliber carbines or submachine guns. Unfortunately, short barrel rifles can leave cartridges designed for longer barrels anemic when it comes to terminal performance. MAXIM Defense Short Barrel Ammunition is designed to create wound cavities that outperform expanding and fragmenting rounds and can tumble at velocities down to 500 fps. MAXIM Defense also just released a line of suppressor-friendly frangible ammunition that can be shot on steel targets at very short distances.

In the grand scheme of things, rocket motors aren’t too far off from black powder propellants in terms of what both compounds do. Estes Energetics, a newly formed company born from the well-known Estes Industries rocket motor company, has made plans to continue the legacy that the GOEX has built by acquiring the company from Hodgdon. Back in September of 2021, Hodgdon made the decision to shut down the GOEX production facility which was a disappointment to both black powder shooters and general gun owners alike. Thankfully, the small model rocket motor company has not only picked up the GOEX line but has created an entirely new company around it.

In the capital of Scotland, we find Edinburgh Rifles and Sporting Goods, a registered firearms dealer offering a full range of new and used firearms, ammunition, reloading components, optics and accessories. Like any gun dealer they get their share of “customer experiences” and today you’re going to see what can happen if chamber a .308 Win cartridge into .25-06 rifle.  The saying is that you learn from your errors. I prefer to keep learning from doing things right over and over, but accidents happen.
