The Rimfire Report: Is 22 Magnum A Viable Concealed Carry Cartridge?

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, sports, and ammunition. Last week we talked a bit about CCI Stingers for use as a concealed carry .22LR cartridge. Once again we saw that although the round can get pretty fast and expand pretty aggressively out of a rifle, it really doesn’t hold up when shot from a backup-sized pistol. That being said, if it’s all you’ve got or all you can manage to carry, it is most certainly better than nothing when it comes to a defensive shooting situation. 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is the big brother of .22LR and many of you have expressed interest in its viability as a concealed carry cartridge. With the recent release of the Walther WMP – a full-size semi-auto optics-ready .22 WMR pistol – the question has come up in my mind once again to determine whether or not .22 Magnum might actually make for a decent lighter-recoil self-defense cartridge for concealed carry. So today we’ll be taking a closer look at the performance metrics of .22 Magnum to see how well it holds up compared to other lighter recoil options for concealed carry.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 12: Deals to Stay Prepared

Every so often, national events occur in such a way that there is always a mass panic for specific firearms goods. Most notably ammunition, receivers, and magazines. This isn’t really a surprise to most of us who have been through the wringer a couple of times but to the uninformed, it might seem a bit crazy. Do you really need that much ammunition? Who really needs 200 PMAGS? What are you really going to do with all those stripped lower receivers? The fact of the matter is, that ammunition gets shot up, magazines break and wear down with constant use, and lower receivers are always great to have around as paperweights. Today’s weekly web deals are going to focus on things that people often make a bull rush for in times of panic – you know the kind I’m talking about. Welcome to TFB Weekly Web deals 12.

The Rimfire Report: The Ultra Hot CCI Stinger In Ballistic Gelatin

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm universe. Last week, we looked at the unique and exciting MK4 Carbine Upper Receiver Firearm, a joint venture between competitive shooter Wade Reed and MaddMacs Precision. A lot of you thought the design was quite inventive. In contrast, others kinda turned their noses up at it in favor of the already compact Ruger 10/22 Charger which does have the benefit of having a bit more modularity and magazine capacity but is undoubtedly much heavier and bulkier than the MK4 Carbine can be. Personally, I thought the MK4 Carbine was a neat idea and it would honestly be a great backpacking gun – especially if there was a way to get more than 10-rounds to a magazine in it. Loaded up with some hot ammo, the MK4 could be a great hunting or even a self-defense firearm in a pinch. Speaking of hot ammo, we’re back again this week doing another ballistic gel test, this time featuring CCI Stinger 36-grain Hollow Points. A lot of you had requested that we test out these hot little cartridges to see how well they’d perform out of a handful of firearms ranging from pocket pistols up to the 10/22 rifle. So today we’ll be taking a look at the data I collected for the CCI Stinger cartridge and see how it stacks up to our previous 22LR ballistic gel tests.

The Rimfire Report: CCI Velocitor As A 22LR Self-Defense Cartridge?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various firearms, trends, and ammunition. Last week we took another look at Federal’s CCI 22LR Punch Personal Defense ammunition to see if it behaved the same when put up against clothing and also when fired out of a rifle. What we saw is that Federal 22LR Punch does indeed expand, but it only does it out of a much longer barrel than wouldn’t be practical to carry concealed. A number of you had requested that we try out some other types of higher velocity 22LR ammunition including CCI Stinger and CCI Velocitor. I was able to get my hands on a few boxes of CCI Velocitors and this week on The Rimfire Report we’ll be putting the CCI Velocitor to the test to see how well it performs in our gel tests.

The Rimfire Report: Federal 22LR Punch Out Of Ruger 10/22 – More Effective?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world. Last week we did some testing with various pistols and Federal’s 22LR Punch personal defense ammunition. While the results demonstrated that Federal Punch performs quite well and achieves sufficient penetration, it did not expand. Beyond that, the ammunition did seem to live up to its velocity claims which were also something nice to see out of a product that is specifically marketed for self-defense. However, a couple of you had mentioned in the comments that you would like to have seen the tests repeated using clothing, and also using a 10/22 rifle to see if it made any difference. So for this week on The Rimfire Report, we’re going back to the range with another gel block and some new guns to see how Federal’s 22LR punch ammunition performs in those particular situations.

TFB Armorer's Bench: Using The Frankford Arsenal Rotary Tumbler Lite

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by  WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and  Frankford Arsenal, I decided to give the Frankford Arsenal Rotary Tumbler Lite a whirl since the weather here in Minnesota has turned to springtime and long periods out in the shop will not be a grueling as they could be in the winter. I have been excited to try out the Rotary Tumbler Lite for some time now and I had some .30 Carbine brass on hand that needed a shine. So that being said, let’s dive right into using the Frankford Arsenal Rotary Tumbler Lite!

The Rimfire Report: Review of Federal Punch 22LR Personal Defense Ammunition

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, ammunition, and sports! Last week we talked a little bit about fixing up a High Standard Flite King using 3D printing to accomplish the task. So far it has worked out very well and further testing after I’ve made adjustments to the feed lips on either side of the magazine body has essentially solved the feeding issue and I’m also happy to report that the new follower is still holding up very well even after repeated range trips. 3D printing is truly a skill set you want to add to your list of home-brewed gunsmithing techniques if you like to be self-sufficient. This week we’re back to testing ammunition – specifically 29-grain Federal Punch 22LR Personal Defense. This ammunition is marketed by Federal as being the first “practical” option for self-defense in the 22LR category.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 6: 22LR Rimfire Ammunition

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 6. In the past, we didn’t have the same flexibility with Amazon deals to get the word out about ammunition deals and sales online. Now that we do, I figured it might be good to start off with some 22LR rimfire ammunition to help satisfy your plinking needs. Rimfire ammunition is no longer priced as cheap as it was but it has come down in price some in comparison to the last two years when we were routinely seeing standard velocity ammunition go for as high as 16 or 17 cents per round during the height of the pandemic. So while the days of 3 or 4 cent 22LR may be gone, you can at least take a little comfort in the fact that the reactionary pricing is at least half gone and starting to come down to more manageable levels. Either that or you’re laughing at the rest of us from your throne made entirely out of boxes of 100-round CCI Mini-Mag sleeves.

TFB Podcast Roundup 40: The ATF, Primers, and Range Etiquette

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 40. The firearms industry is quite an interesting place to me. Before I ever started writing for TFB, I basically only ever looked at firearms through the lens of self-defense, hunting, and mag dumping into the trash at the local clay pit. Working for TFB has greatly expanded the world of firearms to me and gun-oriented podcasts have expanded it even further. Books are great reference material but with most people these days having busy schedules and reading during commutes being highly looked down upon, podcasts just fill a gap that a formal class or presentation would normally fill for those looking to seek after the knowledge of others. With all that being said, this week’s podcast roundup will feature a wide variety of subject matter ranging from the updated ATF eForms process, guiding guests at your local gun range, a good talk about pocket pistols, and of course, another chance to check out our homegrown podcast, where we talk with Richie with Expansion Industries about their brand new primer production facility, focused on getting primers back in the hands of handloaders.

$145M Army Pistol Ammunition Contract Awarded to Winchester

Winchester is about to ramp up production in its facilities in Oxford, Mississippi and East Alton, Illinois in preparation for its latest military contract. The United States Army has officially awarded Winchester a hefty $145M Army Pistol Ammunition contract to produce .38 caliber. 45 caliber and 9mm ammunition over a five-year contract agreement. I was unaware that the US Army was still using 38-caliber pistol ammunition but in any case, this contract is a huge win for Winchester and will keep them secured as one of the largest suppliers of small-caliber ammunition to the United States Military.
