Getting Started in CMP Service Rifle Competition

Since colonial times, Americans have held shooting competitions with rifles used for militia service. These “service rifle competitions” have grown and become formalized into their own sport. Thousands of shooters participate across the country each year, with the national matches held at Camp Perry each summer. Though they are not the most high-speed or tactical event, they are an accessible sport and an excellent test of marksmanship.

TFB Labor Day Deals: Celebrating the American Gun-Toting Worker

Happy Labor Day everyone! While we will be forgoing our regular daily posting, we couldn’t leave our faithful readers high and dry regarding the great Labor Day sales going on today. However, just a quick recap on the history of Labor Day if you allow me. Labor Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday on June 28th, 1894 when congress passed a bill recognizing the event as a statutory holiday for the entire country. Before that, however, Labor Day can trace its observance on a state level back to my home state of Oregon which was the first state within the union to make it a public holiday in 1887, largely at the behest of trade unions and labor movements to set aside a day to celebrate the American worker and the contributions laborers made to the nation’s growth and success. Fast forward over 130 years, and Labor Day is a much celebrated national holiday for every American as we take the three-day weekend to meet up with friends, family, and loved ones and enjoy the unofficial end of summer. I think it’s important on weekends like this to take some time to seek out friends and family and to enjoy the fruits of your hard work throughout the year. Whether that’s with a barbecue, family vacation, or just a much-needed trip to the range, you should really take this time to enjoy everything we have in this great nation of ours that we’ve all helped contribute to. Now everybody put on your best white outfit and let’s dig into some hot Labor Day firearms sales!

Concealed Carry Corner: Factory Ammo Vs Hand Loads

The debate of using factory self-defense ammo or hand loading your own ammo has been going on for quite a while. With ammo scarcity becoming a real problem in the last few years, the transition to reloading has been a popular choice to fill that void. Typically, in the past, older guys who enjoy shooting were the main ones doing reloads but with the ammo shortage, the idea of reloading has become more mainstream. Over the years, I have been on both sides of this issue and it’s a fairly interesting one to consider when looking at the big picture. Let’s take a closer look at factory ammo vs hand loads.

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 22! The concept of the “perfect pair” isn’t anything new but it’s still one that optimizes efficiency in terms of compatible magazines. Today we’re going to be focusing on getting you pair of firearms that use the same magazines so that you can spend less on magazines, and more on ammunition and training with your firearms.

SIG Orders Immediate Recall on Specific Lots of 9mm Elite Ammunition

SIG Sauer has notified its customers of a potential defect that could exist within specific lots of their 115-grain 9mm Elite Ball ammunition. According to SIG, these lots could have potential powder charge variations that could result in a squib (bullet remaining within the barrel). SIG’s recall includes an immediate request for customers to not use this lot of ammunition. The full product recall notice is posted below for your convenience.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 20: Ammopalooza Edition

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 20! Ammunition has finally made its way back onto store shelves and I always like to come back around to this subject every so often to give myself a bit of a reality check when it comes to ammunition prices. The first observation right off the bad is that, yes, things are still expensive and they don’t look like they are going to come down in price anytime soon. Second, I’ve noticed that hunting ammunition is a lot more popular this year and a lot harder to find, especially when it comes to some of the more recently popular hunting cartridges like 6.5 Creedmoor. With H.R. 1808 ominously looming over our heads, I wouldn’t be surprised if more magazines start disappearing from the shelves as a precautionary measure by some. So in addition to some ammunition deals I’ve found, I’m also including some deals on quality AR-15 magazines in case you want to stock up. Never, ever stop buying magazines.

Public Service Announcement: Don't Start A Wildfire

Wildfires have long been a feature of life in the western states. Unfortunately, target shooting starts some of those fires. The good news is that target shooting fires are preventable, so let’s discuss how we can keep them from happening. Public lands make for some of the best shooting spots, but they are at risk of closure every time a negligent shooter starts a wildfire.

TFB Review: The POF SMG MP5 – MP5 Performance Without the Price?

The venerated MP5 design is one that has lasted well beyond its practical use and into the modern age. The MP5 has made itself a comfy home in the minds of American gun owners due to a combination of real-world and fictional portrayals in the hands of operators and action heroes alike. The MP5 is simply a near-ubiquitous design when it comes to the term SMG or submachine gun. However, the trouble with MP5s, especially in the Heckler & Koch manufacture, is they are really hard to get a hold of and on top of that, they’re also insanely expensive. There are a few other great options out there if you’re unwilling to pay two and a half racks for that roller-delayed goodness and today we’re taking a look at one of the more affordable options in the MP5 scene with POF’s (Pakistan Ordnance Factories) SMG MP5 otherwise known as the POF-5. These Pakistan-produced and Arkansas-imported firearms come in at a competitive price, and really have great performance to match if you’re looking to scratch that MP5 itch and don’t really care about the roll mark.

TFB B-Side Podcast: Is Reloading For You? With the Ultimate Reloader

Reloading is one of those hobbies I never thought I’d actually pick up – even as a firearms owner. However, all it took for me to get addicted to the benchtop hobby was for a good friend of mine to send me a very inexpensive Lee Challenger reloading press kit and from there, the rest was history. Reloading can seem intimidating for the uninitiated, I know I was quite intimidated during my first range trip with my first box of reloaded ammunition, however, 10 years down the road, I’ve not only gained a solid grasp on the concept, but I’ve also dipped into new rabbit holes of information I once again never thought I’d find myself in. Suffice it to say reloading is just as rewarding as it is educational and I personally think that more firearms owners should have at least a basic grasp of the concept. I think these sentiments are shared by our guest today, Gavin, a.k.a the Ultimate Reloader. Gavin runs a YouTube channel and website that specializes in all things reloading, as well as some great informative precision rifle content that has really been a valuable resource to me as a reloader over the years. I’m honored today to have him on the podcast with us to give you guys a bird’s eye view of handloading/reloading so that you can determine for yourself whether or not you’d like to pick it up either as a hobby or as a means to shoot more without vastly increasing the cost of ammunition.

This week, however, I was finally able to get my hands on a genuine Gemtech Integra 15-22 Integrally suppressed upper. Today we’ll take a look at both it, and another 15-22 pistol upper topped with an oil filter suppressor to see how the two opposite ends of the spectrum stack up in the .22LR suppression game.

DIY Schlieren Imaging of Bullets In Slow Motion

If you have been reading some of my articles this past year, you must have noticed I have been using a Chronos 1.4 slow-motion camera. I have been looking up different ways to use my slow-motion camera in the context of studying firearms. I have helped to film weapon malfunctions that happen too fast for the eye to see. But what else can I do? Filming bullets flying through the air is kind of boring but there is something else you can do. Schlieren imaging uses a system of light and concave mirrors to see changes of density in a medium. Specifically the change in density of air. So I looked up how to do it and got to it.

Another method is using a hand-held deprimer and the folks from Timber Creek Outdoors are happy to be the exclusive U.S. Distributor of the new hand-held Harvey Deprimer.

The Rimfire Report: Rimfire Reliability – Is it Really That Bad?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we took a look at the practical application of .22WMR and whether or not it would make for a suitable stand-in as a self-defense cartridge. Although .22WMR is magnitudes more powerful than even the hottest of .22LR cartridges, many of you held the same sentiment towards it as you do .22LR – it’s just not powerful enough or reliable enough to feel comfortable carrying when you have other options available to you. The last part of that reasoning caught my attention as I’ve actually never had a failure to fire that I can remember when using .22WMR. So today I wanted to take a closer look at the reliability of various rimfire cartridges based on my experiences, and the experiences of others, to ascertain whether the infamous rimfire reliability gun lore is actually that bad.
