Jeff from TAOFLEDERMAUS frequently explores some more exotic and less well-known loadings and cartridges. Recently he’s dug up a relic of the depression-era – some Sears and Roebuck Co .22 Long ammunition dating back to 1932.

Late last week, Winchester announced a product warning and recall for two batches of their .17 HMR ammunition.  Winchester stated that loads from these two lots could be missing powder.  The primer alone may have enough force to get the bullet into the barrel, but not enough to make it exit.  This could cause a catastrophic failure if a normally charged cartridge were used with the barrel obstructed.  Olin Winchester’s full press release is posted below:

True Velocity has published a press release confirming that their 6.8mm composite-cased ammunition has been selected to the next phase of the US Army’s NGSW program as the cartridge of General Dynamics’ firearm submissions. Moreover, they showed their actual NGSW cartridge. As my colleague Matthew Moss noticed, the press release also revealed an interesting fact that Beretta is a partner of General Dynamics in this project.

In the picture above we can see FN Herstal’s new full range of cartridges in the 5.56x45mm NATO caliber, these will be shown in London, at the Defense and Security Equipment International Exhibition.

Weatherby Inc. has announced the release of a new cartridge called 6.5 Weatherby RPM (Rebated Precision Magnum) and two new Mark V rifles – Backcountry and Backcountry Ti. The cartridge and rifles were developed together with a goal of having a sub-5-pound magnum rifle/ammunition rig. Let’s take a closer look at each of the new Weatherby products.

When it comes to pure fun, rimfire shooting is about as good as it gets without getting naked. Well, I guess if you have a private range you can do both, just make sure to keep your barrel holstered and pointed down range before firing. Moving on, I’ve expressed my love of rimfire (especially suppressed) multiple times in the past. Besides being affordable, there is less recoil to manage, less ear-splitting noise and multiple platforms are chambered in the popular .22LR. Besides, summertime is prime for a bit of rimfire fun.

SIG Sauer has been absolutely killing it in the ammunition market lately. And with their latest release, SIG will be helping you make your kill this fall. Fresh off the line are eight new Elite Hunter Tipped Ammunition loads that feature ballistic tips, concentric bullet jackets, enhanced boat tail and nickel-plated cases for anti-corrosion characteristics.

When carrying a gun daily it’s easy to get caught up in what gun is the best for concealed carry, but we sometimes forget about looking at our carry ammunition. Even in recent forums, I’ve read new conceal carriers asking why they can’t just carry a quality FMJ round instead of a hollow point. When I started reading more about the man’s claim, he said a police officer told him FMJ rounds are better because they penetrate the body more. So there’s lots of misinformation out there and it’s always good to check out claims before taking them as fact.

Seismic High Mass Ammunition is fresh off of winning one of TriggrCon’s Golden Trigger Awards with their 9mm QuakeMaker +M 185 Grain HP ammunition so we had to give them a closer look! Their claim to fame is making heavy for caliber bullets that are ripe for silencer use, and personal defense. They do not have the Ft-Lbs of Energy or explicit Velocity of their ammunition published at this time, but they share these specifications:

Starline Brass has added a new cartridge case to their brass offerings with the unveiling of .350 Legend now being available for handloaders. The .350 Legend cartridge was introduced less than a year ago at SHOT Show 2019, but it already has gained quite a bit of traction by being more stout than a traditional .30-30 Winchester round and being accepted in many AR-15 platforms. I always thought the idea to serve up rimfire ammo in a bucket was great, but the execution left something to be desired. Without naming names, buckets of rounds are only a good thing when you provide shooters with ammo that regularly goes bang. The Federal BYOB – Bring Your Own Bucket Or Bottle – promises a quality product in easy to transport and use containers. I’m hoping that the Federal BYOB program spreads to additional varieties of rimfire ammunition- specifically the Quiet and Subsonic lines. Details can be found below.

At the beginning of the current year, during the SHOT Show 2019, Winchester introduced a new cartridge – the .350 Legend. It is a little known fact that Ruger is approaching their 70th Anniversary of providing the world with quality firearms for all of us to enjoy. Last month, our man Hrachya discussed the debut of factory subsonic 7.62×39 loads that are designed to cycle semiautomatic firearms like AK47 patterned rifles. The move is a tear-inducing moment for me, to take an iconic gun and set it up as a suppressor host, seasoned with quieter ammo. Just in to retailers is the PPU Subsonic Line that includes 7.62×39 as well as 7.62×51 and 9mm offerings. Featuring brass cases, these rounds are loaded with FMJBT projectiles (FMJ for the 9mm) and heavier bullet weights for suppressor, lower-recoil use.

Lately, I’ve had a number of conversations about different ways to keep your firearms in storage and how to maintain them. I think it’s pretty obvious the importance of firearm storage and having the ability to protect your firearms. Security is obviously a reason, but protecting your investments is another great reason to make sure you have a quality safe for your firearms. I have been asked questions about where to put your gun safe and how to keep guns less susceptible to rust due to moisture. Our friends at Ammunition Depot dropped us a note to let us know that they are plaintiffs in a lawsuit setup against the new California Ammo Law. Starting July 1, purchasing any amount of ammunition in California requires a criminal background check. The current process now requires California residents to undergo a point-of-sale “eligibility check” with state systems and pay $1. Consumers who fail to be verified with the eligibility check will be required to undergo a “basic eligibility check” that costs $19 and can take up to 10 days to clear.
