Nammo Group, the international aerospace and defense company headquartered in Norway, has announced that they will be enhancing their US manufacturing base by acquiring an ordnance manufacturing subsidiary of UK-headquartered Chemring Group. Chemring Ordnance runs a plant in Perry, Florida which produces a range or ordnance including fuzes, 40mm ammunition and other ammunition components. Chemring Group’s other arms specialise in electronic countermeasures and sensors.

The Freedom Munitions and X-Treme Bullets companies have both been purchased by Dan Kash after a lengthy bankruptcy process.  TFB reported about the initial bankruptcy filing by Freedom Munition’s parent company, HMT, in June of 2018.  In the video below, Dan explains his history in the firearms and ammunition business, he also explains that some of the employees have stayed on to continue and that they want to earn back your business.

Reloaders should be aware that there is an Accurate Recall that has been issued for some reloading propellants. General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Canada Valleyfield, Inc has determined a potential defect in certain lots of Accurate Powders. Reloaders should take extreme precautions if they use or have recently used Accurate 2495, 4064 or 4350 propellents. Accurate has issued a Recall for these powders for the following lot numbers.

For those that have been wondering about the potential dangers of dropping live ammunition, we have a well documented example for you.  The Family Shooting Academy had a recent incident in which a customer dropped a box of ammo.  Upon hitting the floor, there was a loud bang and the box flew apart.  Despite several people standing nearby, no one was injured.

This week I will offer up some tips on picking the BEST 22 Magnum Ammunition for Self-Defense and/or Hunting! The properties that are desirable in a good self-defense round for anyone who is contemplating carrying a 22 Magnum firearm are often the same traits we look for in a hunting cartridge as well. We all understand that 22 Magnum is near the bottom of the caliber spectrum so we need something with high Foot-Lbs of energy and something that will penetrate (as best as one could hope for this smaller cartridge). So with that being said, let’s dive into what we are looking for in the BEST 22 Magnum rounds for Self-Defense and/or Hunting!

The US Army, US Marine Corps and British Army are collaborating on developing new lightweight small arms ammunition. In recent years there has been an increasing interest in hybrid ammunition, especially those using polymer case components. Todd Townsend, supervisor of the research, development, test and evaluation for the Product Manager for Small Caliber Ammunition recently gave an update on US efforts to develop lightweight ammunition. He explained the Army, USMC and UK are working together to evaluate and refine lightweight ammunition including 5.56x45mm, 7.62x51mm and .50 BMG.

Berger Bullets, a member of the Capstone Precision Group, announced the release of their new .22 caliber projectile.  Weighing in at 85.5 grains it is the second heaviest bullet Berger offers for that caliber. It’s lighter weight allows it to be pushed a little faster than the 90 gr offering as well as allowing it to achieve better stabilization in slower twist rates.  Additionally, the hybrid ogive should help to make it less jump sensitive than the older VLD (Very Low Drag) design.  

The magazine is supposed to give the shooter an increased reliability and performance compared to the use of traditional 5.56×45 magazines. The risk of unwanted feeding problems and inadvertently confusing the various types of ammunition is also minimized. That being said, most people never experience any kind of feeding issues with the normal 5.56 PMAGS.

Ah, Pumpkin Spice season – My favorite time of year. With the hunting season underway, now is when hunters are on the lookout for the latest and greatest in hunting ammunition.  As the popularity of the AR-15 platform continues to grow it continues to see more widespread use in the hunting community. The 223 chamberings are effective for varmints but lack the sought after knockdown power.  The AR platform has seen a slew of new cartridge offerings, but none as storied as the .458 SOCOM.  

Olin Winchester have been awarded the contract to run the US Army’s premier ammunition manufacturing plant. Lake City Ammunition Plant in Independence, Missouri has produced small arms ammunition since the beginning of World War Two.

Federal have been awarded a new delivery order with nearly $13 million for 5.56x45mm MK311 Mod 3 Frangible Ammunition. The order falls under a contract placed earlier in 2017.

Russian ammunition manufacturing company  Techcrim has introduced a saboted buckshot load for the 9.6x53mm Lancaster cartridge which they co-designed with Molot Oruzhie. This cartridge is developed to be chambered in oval bore (a.k.a. Lancaster rifled) firearms to make them legally considered shotguns in Russia. However, despite the Lancaster rifling is considered smoothbore in Russia, it actually imparts a spin to the projectile, which means if these saboted buckshot loads work in 9.3x56mm Lancaster cartridge, they should work for rifle cartridges, too.

A new set of US Department of Defense solicitations has been  published on the website of a US government program called SBIR ( Small Business Innovation Research). While browsing the list of projects, I came across a USSOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) call for designing spotting bullets that the command plans to deploy instead of the conventional tracers.

Vista Outdoors has published a press release announcing that SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute) has approved and issued the 12 Gauge 1-3/4″ cartridge and chamber drawing standards for smoothbore barrels.
