The Rimfire Report: Pondering the MK4 Carbine from MaddMacs Precision

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, ammunition, and sports! Last week we took a look at the much loved CCI Velocitor 40-grain 22LR cartridge to assess its efficacy as a self-defense cartridge when being fired out of a pistol. What we saw and what many of you could have guessed is that the hypervelocity 40-grain hollow points didn’t really perform all that well out of the shorter barrels, but once up to speed out of the longer barrel of my Ruger 10/22, they expanded aggressively and also penetrated to an adequate depth! Interesting stuff! Speaking of Ruger firearms, I recently came across this interesting upper for the MKIV pistol manufactured by MaddMacs Precision Tactical LLC – the MK4 Carbine. I’ve always dreamed of working out a way to turn my MKIV pistol into a lightweight carbine and while there might be some hokey homemade options out there, this is the first time I’ve seen one made by a reputable manufacturing company and it looks not only well made but opens up a lot of possibilities to turn your MKIV pistol into a more well rounded and lightweight backpack gun. Today we’ll be checking out the features of this upper and make a few comments on its design and how I think it could be used in various applications.

Zastava M21 – The New Generation Kalashnikov Rifle From Serbia That Never Caught On

Mass production of the famous AK-47 started in 1949, and by 1959 the design was completely finalized. Many countries tried to modernize it, some were successful, like Poland with its “Beryl” program, and some unsuccessful, like Hungary, which ended up ditching all changes in the late 70s to just make a standard AKM rifle they called “AK-63”. But there were modernization efforts that went beyond simple upgrades, and Zastava M21 is probably one of the best examples of that.

The Rimfire Report: Federal 22LR Punch Out Of Ruger 10/22 – More Effective?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world. Last week we did some testing with various pistols and Federal’s 22LR Punch personal defense ammunition. While the results demonstrated that Federal Punch performs quite well and achieves sufficient penetration, it did not expand. Beyond that, the ammunition did seem to live up to its velocity claims which were also something nice to see out of a product that is specifically marketed for self-defense. However, a couple of you had mentioned in the comments that you would like to have seen the tests repeated using clothing, and also using a 10/22 rifle to see if it made any difference. So for this week on The Rimfire Report, we’re going back to the range with another gel block and some new guns to see how Federal’s 22LR punch ammunition performs in those particular situations.

Ruger PC Carbine With Stealth Gray Magpul PC Backpacker Stock

The Ruger PC Carbine is a deservedly venerated rifle that comes in a handful of core configurations and numerous other trims and styles. While Nicholas C has completely bastardized his own PC Carbine using a grab bag of Boyd’s Gunstock parts, Magpul and Ruger have teamed up once again to offer the PC Carbine, this time with a Magpul Stealth Gray PC Backpacker stock. This $150 piece of kit is a popular aftermarket option for Ruger PC carbine owners as it takes the rather large footprint of the 9mm carbine and allows it to be neatly stowed in a small bag and even includes accommodation for storing a single pistol magazine. The new Magpul PC Backpacker Stealth Gray option is being made available directly from the Ruger store as a new SKU that costs just a hair less than what you’d expect to pay for the two items individually.

Carbon K2 Stock Upgrades Announced by AG Composites

Composite rifle stocks offer shooters a lot of upgrades in terms of durability and longevity over traditional wood stocks. While a traditional wood stock can last years and can be durable in its own right, exposure to the elements as well as years of bumps and scrapes can take a nice wooden stock and slowly destroy it with repeated use. AG Composites has just announced a couple of recent upgrades they made to their popular Carbon K2 stock which makes it more user-friendly and also fits more in line with customer feedback that AG Composites has received since the release of the Carbon K2.
