POTD: It's AUGtober! Steyr AUG A3 SF in The Sound of Earth

For gun nuts, it’s now officially AUGtober! Off to Austria then, to take a look at what’s going on in Lake Traun, or Traunsee, a lake in the Salzkammergut (Salzburg area). The lake has a maximum depth of 191 meters, and it’s a popular tourist destination, with medieval castles and other attractions. In our Photo Of The Day, we see members of the Austrian Jagdkommando combat divers with their Steyr AUG A3 SF rifles. This bullpup is used by Austrian Jagdkommando Special Forces and uses a 3x optic housing, which is lower than normal to make it more comfortable to use the red dot sight on top. The A3 SF version also has additional side rails, scope covers and an external bolt release.

These of course came from a few different government factories going by Norinco, Polytech, and before them Clayco.

TFB Armorer's Bench: Henry Large Loop Installation

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to show the installation process of a large loop on a Henry 22 that made it to my bench. Now, full disclosure, this is my Henry from when I was a kid and I felt it was time for some upgrades because, well, I can. This is Henry’s youth model 22 lever action and during this process, I was also detailing switching out the stock and handguard for a Boyd’s Gunstock review over at AllOutdoor.com which is yet to hit the internet. In this article, I swap out the old lever for a large loop offered on Henry’s website as well as a new receiver cover that has a saddle ring in it just for the fun of it. That receiver cover is also found on Henry’s website. Let’s dive right into this Henry Large Loop Installation!

21st Century Battle Rifle: The Springfield Saint Victor .308

In this episode of TFBTV, Hop tries to get a read on the Springfield Armory Saint Victor in .308 Winchester. Springfield’s big bore AR is one of the lightest factory AR-10/LR-308 pattern rifles on the market, but some sacrifices had to be made to get it below 8 lbs. A strange combination of features makes it hard to tell what the Saint Victor .308 is best suited for. Hunting rifle? DMR? Or is it a throwback to the battle rifles of the Cold War period?

TFB Weekly Web Deals 24: AK-Style Rifles and Pistols

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 24. Aside from the AR-15 in the United States, few firearms worldwide are as recognizable as the AK. Originally designed and first produced in the years following the conclusion of the Second World War, the AK-47 and its derivatives have spread across the globe in great numbers and are still in some forms used to this day by militaries, private citizens, and rogue organizations. Despite decades of it being the “enemy’s gun” during the years of the cold war, the AK-style rifle has gained a healthy following in the western world, and both fans and detractors of the AK rifle can at least appreciate its mass adoption, legendary durability, and simplicity of design. In honor of that achievement and to perhaps help one of you budding AK enthusiasts out there find the deal you’ve been waiting for, we’ll be featuring all AK-style rifles and pistols for the TFB Weekly Web Deals 24.

TFB FIRST LOOK: Introducing the New 5.56 SIG MCX SPEAR-LT

Small arm designs are introduced in both revolutionary and evolutionary processes, each being equally important to developing a reliable and capable firearm system. For manufacturers, engineering a new gun and its progressive iterations, is a painstaking progression that requires refinement, numerous evaluation cycles, and performance improvements. For the consumer, the excitement of a new system is intertwined with compatibility concerns, the hope for additional features in future releases, and waiting  – a cycle that is not unique to the firearm industry. In early 2015, SIG Sauer released the MCX, a revolutionary design in a market awash in direct impingement AR-15 variants. In the years since the initial release, the MCX progressed into the MCX Virtus, arriving at where we are today – the introduction of the SIG MCX SPEAR-LT.

Why AK-47 Imports Suck

In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves is at Zastava USA visiting with the Zastava team to discuss why AK-47 imports into the United States are absolutely terrible. Fortunately, Zastava has figured out a way to get by the hurdles presented by ridiculous U.S. laws, and the Serbian AK-47 manufacturer is glad to show the TFBTV team how they comply with the law while still producing an excellent AK, just like the AKs from the mother country.

The Rimfire Report: CMMG Bravo 22LR AR-15 Conversion Kit

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all bout the rimfire firearm world and its many firearms, ammunitions, shooting sports, and history! Last time on The Rimfire Report we took a look at the very budget-friendly Heritage Arms Rough Rider 22 caliber rimfire revolver. That little revolver is apparently one of the best-kept secrets of the rimfire world as many of you have had similar enjoyable results as I did while shooting the revolver. However, when it comes to modern arms and training, nothing is quite as ubiquitous or common as America’s rifle, the AR15. Pete’s September 3rd SILENCER SATURDAY featured a full-auto CMMG 22LR AR-15 conversion kit. Humorously enough, I had already planned to do a review and overview of the CMMG Bravo 22LR AR-15 Conversion Kit for Rimfire Report and if it hadn’t been Labor Day weekend, you all would have gotten a double dose of CCMG rimfire goodness. Unfortunately, our overview today will be a much milder, semi-auto look at the conversion kit but the same warning that Pete aired last week will be aired here – be careful, this conversion kit is sure to bring a smile to your face.

MDT Builds World's Longest Rifle To Find Out How Long Is Too Long

A couple of months ago, we took a look at an amazing MDT project where they made the world’s tallest scope base that resulted in 20″ scope height over bore, to find out if scope height matters for long-distance shooting. Today, we have another mind-blowing MDT project. The company’s engineers built a bolt action rifle with a six-foot long barrel to see what effect barrel length has on the projectile’s velocity for a given cartridge (.308 Win in this case) by gradually cutting the barrel down. Who makes six-foot long barrel blanks? Nobody, the barrel of this experimental rifle was made by screwing together two barrels! MDT claim that with an overall length of 88 inches, their project gun is the world’s longest rifle.

TFB Review: Athlon HELOS BTR 4-20×50 IR FFP MOA Rifle Scope

The Athlon HELOS BTR rifle scope series comes in a wide variety of magnifications and objective lens sizes, but the one I’ve tested and reviewed here is the 4-20x50mm version with a Minute Of Angle (MOA) reticle and turrets. MIL reticle and turrets are also an option on all but one in the HELOS BTR line, which is the 1-10x28mm that comes in an MOA bullet drop compensator reticle. The Athlon HELOS BTR as tested has the reticle located in the first focal plane (FFP), and the magnification level of 4-20x is a nice jumping off point for targets 50 yards and beyond.
