TFB Review: Savage Arms Impulse Big Game Straight Pull Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor

When Savage Arms announced their Impulse straight pull rifle, I was intrigued. The idea of a straight pull seems like it could be better than a traditional bolt action where you have to lift the bolt up before pulling it back. Well, Savage sent out their Impulse Big Game chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor for this review. So let’s take a closer look at it.

The Rimfire Report: Is 700 Yards a Bridge Too Far for 22LR?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report. This ongoing series of rimfire-focused articles is about the rimfire firearm world and its many firearms, trends, ammunition types, and of course history. Last week fellow TFB writer and gunsmith savant Sam S. took a deep dive into the antiquated 30 Rimfire cartridge. Like many of its other rimfire cousins, 30 Rimfire just didn’t survive the wide acceptance of centerfire cartridges which proved to be superior in virtually every way. This week we’re going to be covering something that caught my attention quite recently. Around the start of the new year the YouTube channel Garand Thumb started a discussion with a guy in the comments of one of his recent videos saying he could consistently hit a soda can at 700 yards with a 22LR. Obviously, a lot of online drama has been drummed up about this and I’m not particularly interested in that portion of it, but rather the actual practicality of the claim. So today we’ll discuss whether or not I think this is possible based on what I know and have experienced with 22LR.

The rifle is crowned with a riflescope by Steiner (possibly the T6Xi 3-18×56 model), also a member of the Beretta group.

Moses Babcock Action-Inspired Muzzleloader from Poland

About five years ago we published an article telling about a 19th-century 8-bore muzzleloading percussion shotgun designed by a gentleman named Moses Babcock. What sets this firearm apart is its extremely simple and ambidextrous action/lock mechanism. Marek, a TFB reader from Poland, recently contacted me and told that after reading the TFB article about the Moses Babcock shotgun, he designed and built a percussion rifle with a similar action. I thought our readers would love to see his project and Marek kindly allowed me to share it with you.

The Swiss Treatment – New Strike M-LOK ARCA Rail Adapter

ARCA Swiss rails are the epitome of stabilization attachment methods for a number of reasons. Precision target shooters and hunters often use them for high-stress situations where quick readjustments are needed. This quickness of adjustment largely comes from the design of the rail which allows the user to simply slide the rail of the firearm through the adapter and then quickly adjust it for tightness. Strike Industries has just announced the introduction of their new 6.8″ Strike M-LOK ARCA rail adapter which fits most handguards and M-LOK-equipped rifle chassis on the market.

Aero Made a 6.5 Creedmoor Rifle for US SOCOM: The MRGG

In 2019, US SOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) sought a weapon system that could overmatch small arms threats from opposing forces. The 6.5 Creedmoor was ultimately selected for this new platform due to its ability to engage targets at significantly longer distances than the .308 Win or 7.62 NATO and the ability to acquire or produce cartridges from available components and manufacturers. US SOCOM already adopted 6.5 CM in 2018 in limited capacities, so this made sense. The rifle was sought in two variants: Assault and Sniper Support, thus referred to as MRGG-A and MRGG-S respectively. The MRGG or Mid-Range Gas Gun program was developed and solicited by the defense industry. The solicitation had tight length, accuracy, and weight constraints. Aero Precision from Washington State made a competing rifle that they ultimately withdrew from the competition, but it’s still an amazing rifle made of state-of-the-art components.

Official Release: The Henry Homesteader 9mm Semiauto Rifle

I love TFB with all my heart, but my next job will include ‘riding fences’ as part of my daily duties. Whether it’s a lever action like a side loading .30-30 or the new Henry Homesteader 9mm semiautomatic rifle with wood furniture, my vision involves a horse, Copenhagen long cut, and a solid hat to keep the setting sun out of my eyes. In reality, me ‘riding fences’ probably would involve a 20 year old mountain bike, jean shorts, and looking for my lost cat. But I digress, the Henry Homesteader is definitely intriguing and I’m happy to see a non-standard 9mm long gun with a threaded barrel enter the market. Now Henry, how about a lever action version?
