The Rimfire Report: The Ranger Model 103-8 – A Blast From The Past

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many different types of competitions, shooting sports, ammunition, and firearms! Last week we checked out the tiny Italian Chiappa Little Badger 22LR survival rifle. Despite its intended use as a survival rifle or pack rifle, I’ve found it incredibly fun to plink with and I think I can safely reaffirm my statement from the article that it’s definitely suitable as a small game hunting rifle in a pinch, although it could for sure use some better metrics in the accuracy department. This week’s subject is something we’ve never actually run into before on The Rimfire Report, a rifle without a serial number. This week we’re going to dive into the curious case of the Ranger Model 103-8 .22 caliber single-shot rifle. This blast from the past has an interesting story behind its short lifespan and despite its age, still has a lot to offer to those who might own one!

The Rimfire Report: Italy's Chiappa Little Badger 22LR Survival Rifle

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report. TFB’s ongoing series covering rimfire firearms, history, ammunition, and sports, continues on from last week’s article covering Project Appleseed and how it has made practical marksmanship more accessible to civilians via its purposeful inclusion of commonly available 22LR semi-auto rifles like the Ruger 10/22. It seems some of you took issue with the fact that people are using simulated distance targets for rimfire, implying that proper marksmanship can’t be accomplished at those distances with those guns. However, I’d also like to point out that a considerable portion of what Project Appleseed does is serve as an education program for both adults and young children and it’s why you almost always see children involved in the pictures Project Appleseed posts on their Facebook page. While I’m all for kids learning to handle full-sized weapons, I don’t think we can realistically expect the average-sized 8-year-old to properly handle both the weight and the recoil of an M1 Garand or M1A rifle, especially from a standing position. In any case, and no matter what level of marksmanship knowledge these kids are receiving, I think it’s a net positive rather than any sort of detriment to a child’s or even an adult’s understanding of the basic principles of marksmanship. With that being said, this week’s subject is back to another review, this time featuring Italy’s Chiappa Little Badger 22LR survival rifle. Let’s get right into it.

H&K MR556A1 SBR From the Film "Zero Dark Thirty" Up for Auction

TV and film guns are always going to be popular collector’s items and while some of them are often creations directly from the bench of a deranged gunsmith, some prop movie guns are meant to be literal representations of real-world firearms. In this particular example on Gunbroker, we see an H&K MR556A1 SBR that is intended to resemble an HK416D that was used by the US Navy Seals during the raid on Bin Landen’s compound back in 2011. This firearm was converted for use with blanks by Point Blank Props’ for use during the filming of the movie Zero Dark Thirty, a Hollywood thriller based on the events surrounding the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. What’s cool about this particular collector’s item is that instead of its movie-ready black firing adapter configuration, this particular prop gun has been restored to work with live ammunition.

BIGGER BLK: Announcing the B&T USA Advanced Precision Rifle In 8.6BLK

Physics is an unrelenting mistress, especially when we are discussing terminal ballistics.  I am the last guy you want explaining high school physics, but Newton’s laws of motion apply whether you are a target shooter, a hunter, or a soldier. All things being equal more mass traveling at higher velocities will result in a greater transfer of energy. Factoring subsonic velocities into the equation makes transferring that energy even more challenging. B&T USA has stepped into the world of bigger subsonic cartridges with the B&T USA Advanced Precision Rifle in 8.6BLK.

TsKIB SOO MTs-566 Turns Up In Ukraine

The report shows a sniper team from Wagner, Russia’s largest private military contractor, in position in Bakhmut. The date the piece was filmed is unclear but the rifle itself is rarely seen and the footage gives us a decent look at the rifle and even of it firing a couple of rounds.

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many different types of guns, gear, ammunition types, and history. Last week we departed from our normal rimfire coverage to talk about a slightly related ammunition called Pinfire ammunition. A lot of you seemed to be interested in the idea and if I get the chance, I’ll do my best to get a hold of some firearms and ammunition so we can take a much closer look at them for ourselves. This week we are getting back into more dedicated rimfire stuff with the Tactical Solutions XRT Drop-In 10/22 Trigger. This aftermarket 10/22 trigger pack launched right at the end of 2022 and is a world apart from a lot of the aftermarket triggers I’ve come across. German JAKELE J1 Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle

Straight pull bolt action hunting rifles are extremely popular in Europe for multiple reasons. They are manual repeaters which makes them legal in most countries, and they are pretty much as reliable as a regular turn-bolt bolt action yet are much faster. These rifles are a great blend of reliability and speed, perfect for a driven hunt which is a very popular type of hunting in the Old World. No wonder why the majority of straight pull rifle makers are from Europe (Blaser, Strasser, Merkel, Heym, Beretta, etc) although American companies have a presence in this market too (Savage, Browning, etc.). In this article, we’ll take a look at a new German straight pull bolt action rifle, the Jakele J1.
