SILENCER SATURDAY #107: Joe Rogan, Virginia, SHOT 2020 Preview

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to another episode of TFB’s Silencer Saturday, brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – home of the new Resonator K. Last week we talked about suppressing the 5.7 cartridge, a topic I myself am unfamiliar with. However, I’m looking forward to getting in the game with either the new Ruger-57, the FN FiveseveN or the FN P90 (ish). Let’s see what comes out of this year’s SHOT Show. Speaking of which, besides some news and tidbits, I thought we could do a SHOT 2020 preview of some of the rumors surrounding new suppressors and accessories. My hopes center around both the rimfire and integral worlds, followed closely by 300BLK and other subsonic centerfire cartridges.

NEW PEW PEW: YHM Resonator K Lands In Time For SHOT 2020

Our friends at Yankee Hill Machine have just announced the arrival of a new suppressor to their rifle model lineup. The YHM Resonator K has been anticipated ever since the Turbo K made its debut. As a typical American silencer owner myself, I can understand the “ this is awesome, but what about that other thing” line of thought. Now, Turbo K has a new cousin in the short, sweet and affordable category.

SILENCER SATURDAY #106: 5.7mm Suppressor And Host Options

Welcome back to the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by my friends at Yankee Hill Machine – home of the Turbo and Resonator line of rifle caliber suppressors. Last week we compared the new H&K SP5 with the TPM MP5SD, a showdown we’ll revisit in coming months. This past week we had the pleasure of announcing the Ruger-57 pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. Unsurprisingly, my first question was about the availability of threaded barrels for suppressor use. While a threaded barrel for the new Ruger-57 will surely be a factory option in the future, there will those of us who will not want to wait. So, with all the renewed excitement in the 5.7x28mm round, let’s take a look at some 5.7mm suppressor and host options.

Noveske and Dead Air Announce "Heat"-Inspired Collaboration

Chances are, if you’re a firearms fan and have ever discussed “ top movie shootouts” or “ best gun films“, the classic 1995 heist action/thriller “Heat” has entered into the conversation. The infamous rolling shootout scene, which takes place on the streets of Los Angeles following a botched smash-and-grab bank robbery, is often hailed as one of the best action sequences in a film. Featured heavily in this scene are the robbers’ Colt 733s, converted to full-auto. These Colt Commando models are wielded effectively (complete with some controlled bursts and competent mag changes) by Robert De Niro as criminal Neil McCauley and by his partner-in-crime Chris Shiherlis, played by Val Kilmer. Colt Commandos are popular with the retro/cloner crowd, and for good reason. The design oozes nostalgia, and there’s an air of old-school cool about the fixed A2-style front sight with the integrated carry handle rear sight. Dead Air Silencers and Noveske Rifleworks have taken that inspiration and partnered up on an interesting “enhanced” 733-style collaboration, limited to only 50 units nationwide.

SILENCER SATURDAY #105: H&K SP5 Vs MP5SD And NFA News

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday proudly brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – home of the Turbo and Resonator suppressors. Last week we brought you a writeup on suppressing the new GLOCK 44 rimfire pistol – a setup I believe will be in every rimfire aficionados rotation.  This week we are going to run through some recent NFA news and then take a peak at my latest purchase – the H&K SP5. I’ve submitted my Form 1 application, payed my “tax” mailed my prints, ordered a stock and eagerly await the Crown’s blessing to shoulder my authentic German roller-delayed silencer host. Until then, we’ll have to play the SP5 vs MP5SD game as pistol versus short barreled rifle.

SILENCER SATURDAY #104: The GLOCK 44 Suppressed

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone and thank you for joining us for another addition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by our friends at Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of quality affordable suppressors, firearms and accessories. Last week we discussed suppressing the IWI Galil ACE using the KNS adjustable piston. My conclusion is that if you run a suppressed AK patterned rifle, the KNS Piston is a very worthwhile investment. It’s rare that I’m genuinely impressed by firearm performance anymore, yet last week I was very happy with the ACE/KNS combination. Today we get a chance to look at the GLOCK 44 suppressed with a Dead Air Mask rimfire silencer. I’ve been eagerly awaiting my chance to suppress the new GLOCK G44 for a few months and luckily the barrels arrived just a few hours ago in time for our weekly silencer discussion.

ATF: The Franklin Armory Reformation Reclassified As A Non-NFA SBS

We are breaking some new ground here today in the world of the Gun Control Act (GCA) and the National Firearms Act (NFA). The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has just published a letter stating that the Franklin Armory Reformation has been reclassified as a GCA/SBS that it falls under the GCA without being an NFA controlled firearm. The Franklin Armory Reformation reclassified as a “GCA/SBS” will have an impact on the sale and interstate transportation of the firearm by current owners.

SILENCER SATURDAY #103: The Galil ACE Suppressed – KNS Style

Good morning everyone and welcome back to another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, home of the Turbo K2. Last week we dove into an academic exercise regarding the normalization of suppressors by the government, industry and consumers alike. The comment section was lively, with most of us agreeing that the perception of silencers, the NFA process and NFA laws need to change. In case anyone is wondering, my stance on any bans is absolute – we should focus our efforts on criminal actions, not inanimate objects. This week we are back out on the range with a IWI Galil ACE suppressed with a SilencerCo Saker and outfitted with a KNS Precision AK Adjustable Gas Piston. Thank you to both IWI and KNS for loaning me the equipment for today’s Silencer Saturday evaluation.

SILENCER SATURDAY #102: Nearly 2M Suppressors In Common Use?

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday sponsored by Yankee Hill Machine. Nearly two feet of snow has kept me from getting out to the range and filming, meaning that our look at the KNS adjustable gas piston for the IWI Galil ACE in 7.62x39mm and subsequent testing has to wait another week. In the meantime, between the ATF Firearms In Commerce Report released a few months ago and the NSSF’s report on Firearms Production Figures this week, I wondered what more we can do to increase the number of suppressors in common use in the United States. And while there isn’t one solution that will boost silencer ownership overnight, there may be something the firearms industry can do, that won’t cost any money and may nudge buyers in the right direction.

SILENCER SATURDAY #99: Dead Air Wolverine PBS-1 For Commie Guns

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the 99th edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – home of the new YHM  Resonator R2 and YHM Turbo T2 suppressors. Last week we reviewed the SureFire SOCOM300-TI, a very capable 7.62 suppressor that is also light in the weight department. Today we are going to take a look at a silencer that has been on the market for a few years – the Dead Air Wolverine PBS-1. The Wolverine is specifically designed to suppress Kalashnikov patterned rifles (aka Commie Guns) mostly due to its variety of mounting solutions as well as it’s bore allowances to compensate for our of spec threading and bore lines.

ASA: National Hearing Conservation Association Supports Suppressors

It seems like a no brainer – devices that protect shooters and bystanders ear’s should be considered health safety devices. And now you have some official proof to reference the next time a skeptic looks at you sideways. Two weeks ago, the National Hearing Conservation (NHCA) sent a letter to the  American Suppressor Association (ASA) supporting the use of firearm suppressors to mitigate hearing damage. Sounds like it’s time to buy another silencer.

SILENCER SATURDAY #98: The Lightweight SureFire SOCOM300-TI

Good afternoon everyone and thanks for joining us for the 98th edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday, brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – home of the new YHM  Resonator R2 and YHM Turbo T2 suppressors. Last week we discussed shotgun suppressors, specifically the SilencerCo Salvo 12 and their place in the firearms world. I didn’t expect a rush on 12 gauge hosts and shotgun suppressors after our walkthrough, however I think that models like the Salvo are still useful even with all their unique attributes. This week we head back to the rifle world with a look at the SureFire SOCOM300-TI suppressor.

SILENCER SATURDAY #97: Shotgun Suppressors – Worth It?

Good morning everyone and thanks for joining us for the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – manufacturers of the new Resonator R2 with adaptable interface (additional information below). Last week we took you through the basics on how to buy a silencer; an important topic but admittedly a real snooze-fest. One commenter requested some extra hot baffle action for this week, literally pushing a suppressor beyond manufacturer recommendations. While I’m not ready to torch a perfectly good can, the point was taken – let’s spice it up this week with a look at shotgun suppressors.

What Would You Buy If You Had An Hour To Spend 1 Million Dollars On Guns and Gear?

Occasionally I’ll sit down in a restaurant with family or good buddies and strike up gun related conversations. A few years ago my dad jokingly said he would love to give me a million dollars to buy whatever gun parts I wanted, but the catch would be I only had an hour to spend it. He always laughed and said he had no doubt I could easily spend that on guns and gear if given the opportunity. It was a great conversation and whenever I go to trade shows or out to dinner with friends in the industry, I always ask the same question. Now don’t get me wrong, I know this article isn’t very scientific or informational but it’s something really fun to think about. Let’s dive into my choices for my 1 million dollar spending spree.

SILENCER SATURDAY #96: NFA Process 101 – How To Buy A Silencer

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to another Silencer Saturday and brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine. Last week we talked about the National Firearms Act (NFA) and why it kills design and manufacturing innovation in the firearms industry. From the consumer’s standpoint, the process to buy, transfer and own NFA items can be just as complex and daunting. So this week I thought we should take a simple, step-by-step approach to buying silencers and other NFA items in the United States. This may be a refresher to those of you who have recently purchased, but for those of you who are just starting this process, I hope to bring you a little bit of insight and guidance to make the journey easier. So let’s take a look at NFA 101 – buying a silencer.
