SILENCER SATURDAY #79: The Dead Air Wolfman 9mm Suppressor

Good morning everyone and thank you for joining us for another installment of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. I’ve been away from the range for the last week, so I’ll finish up with the small footprint, small price tag YHM Turbo K next Saturday. I also want to check back in with our CCI Quiet Clean suppressed rimfire testing. For today, I thought I’d introduce you to the Dead Air Wolfman 9mm suppressor – the evolution of their modular Wolf 9SD silencer released a few years ago,

SILENCER SATURDAY #78: Kurz; Mini; Short – More YHM Turbo K

Good afternoon friends and welcome back to our little silent safe haven for everything suppressor related. Following up on last week’s unboxing of the YHM Turbo K, we’ll get into some initial observations and a discussion on which host pairs best with a shorter silencer. Call them mini, kurz, or short, these silencers have a distinct roll in your collection and have been gaining market strength in recent years. My take is that because supersonic rifle rounds will be loud regardless of silencer design and size, a compact weapon deserves a compact can. However, another school of thought is that longer hosts can use shorter silencers to avoid becoming comically long. Luckily, with quick disconnect options, your K-sized silencer isn’t anchored to just one gun.

Suppressed Kel-Tec SUB2000 Shorty

The Kel-Tec SUB2000 is one of the more popular firearms produced by Kel-Tec. Its folding barrel makes the whole platform compact when stored. The latest iteration of the SUB2000 comes with a factory threaded barrel. The problem is when you attach a suppressor to the SUB2000, it sticks out past the stock when folded. Robert W. posted his SUB2000 shorty in an NFA group.

Welcome everyone to our 13th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you missed any one of our other articles, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this gat a sweet deal or does it only have fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

Thread Pitch: How I stopped worrying and learned to love M13.5x1LH

When it comes to silencers, we’ve talked about thread pitch basics in the past. In those discussions, however, absent was any preferential recommendations of any patterns or handedness. Well, say no more fam – Derek Smith Of Blackstone Marketing (and formerly Gemtech/AAC) along with Todd Magee and Mike Smith Of Dead Air Silencers lay out some basic facts of why the M13.5x1LH thread pitch is better than the reigning U.S. champion 1/2×28 standard for 9mm pistols. I’ve included part of their discussion here, for the full story follow the link posted below.

SILENCER SATURDAY #77: Discreet Ballistics MASSIVE Metering Day

Hello everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday, saving your hearing one weekend at a time since 2017. Last week we talked about the use of suppressors by criminals – a unicorn-sighting type event in comparison to all other violent crime in the United States. However the discussion was important, especially for uninitiated shooters who’s previous knowledge of suppressors might have strictly come from media and entertainment sources. Since last week, the American Suppressor Association has started a petition campaign as well as a membership drive to protect silencers from official scrutiny. Luckily, today we get to return to to actual suppressor data with the results from a massive metering day coordinated by ammunition manufacturer Discreet Ballistics.

SILENCER SATURDAY #76: Firearm Suppressors In The Crosshairs

Good morning everyone and thank you for joining us for episode #76 of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. Unfortunately, we will take a break from our regular technical and review content to discuss firearm suppressors in the news. As always, I’ll do my very best to stay away from partisan politics as well as drama and sensationalism. But, unlike some media reports on the functionality of silencers, we will stick to the facts as we know them – even though this is obviously a subject that is close to my heart.

SILENCER SATURDAY #75: Cleaning The MP5SD

Good evening everyone and thank you for joining us for the 75th edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. After a year and a half we have covered a lot of suppressed ground. But we still have a solid supply of topics, review ideas and unique silencer host combinations. As we discussed last week, we will kick the summer off with the review of the YHM Turbo K coming up soon. But for this week, let’s take a brief look at cleaning the MP5SD.

Japanese Light Machine Guns: The Type 99 LMG

The Japanese 7.7mm Type 99 took after its predecessor the 6.5mm Type 96, both machine guns forming the basis of mobile fire support during the Second World War. Type 99 was a magazine fed, gas operated, light machine gun with a removable barrel that began production in 1941 and continuing until the end of the war. Interestingly it probably was one of the first few light machine gun designs that saw a mass issue with an optical sight, something that small arms design wouldn’t see again until the SUSAT on the SA80’s LSW.

SILENCER SATURDAY #74: TFB Staff Quiet Combo Favorites

Good evening everyone and thanks for joining us for yet another, albeit late, Silencer Saturday. Hopefully you all are getting a chance to spend some time with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, maybe out on the range for some suppressed fun. In today’s edition we are taking a look at some of the TFB Staff’s quiet combo favorites. Rather than hear my top choices for the 74th time, I thought we should ask the guys who keep TFB running for their best host/silencer setups.

American Suppressor Association Industry Forum

It’s hard to talk about the National Firearms Act (NFA) and not feel frustrated and angry. Not only are we constrained by arbitrary rules, regulations and laws, but we also have to pay a tax and wait a long time to take ownership of suppressors, short barreled firearms and other weapons classified under the NFA. So, while we strive and yearn for deregulation, we also look for ways to improve the process we are forced to use if we want regulated items. Last week, the American Suppressor Association hosted their second annual industry forum where the topic of modernizing the NFA process and current wait times was presented to government officials.

PistonPal And Streamlight Plates From Warren Innovative Technologies

Amidst all the high-caliber new releases and blockbuster product launches are the smaller, often times one and two person companies that dedicate their skills to innovating seemingly insignificant parts, accessories and tools that make our lives easier. Warren Innovative Technologies is one of those companies. 3D printing parts from ABS plastic, the company is pushing out new additions to their lineup at a breakneck pace. Their most recent releases, the PistonPal and a Streamlight attachment plate, are focused on making suppressor and weapon light user’s experience brighter and a bit more organized.

SILENCER SATURDAY #73: The Best Suppressor Ammo

Good afternoon silenced shooters and welcome back to the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. We spend a lot of time analyzing, researching and discussing the best suppressors for your needs within my weekly ramblings – which is obviously important. But we don’t spend enough time on the importance of ammo selection. Even the best silencers in the world can sound subpar with a faulty ammo pairing. It’s like  sipping a Chardonnay alongside a rare ribeye steak. So what is the best suppressor ammo for you? Let’s discuss.

FOUND On GunBroker! B&T TP9-45 SBR In 45 ACP

It’s taken years, but I’ve finally found a B&T firearm that I won’t consider performing evil acts to obtain. My friends over at AR15 maintain several threads dedicated to B&T guns, on of which is specific to the TP9. A few days ago, a sharp-eyed poster found a listing for a TP9-45 short barreled rifle (SBR) up for sale on Gunboker). I love all the B&T guns, I just don’t have any love for the .45 ACP cartridge.

SILENCER SATURDAY #71: Suppressor Height Sights Are OVERRATED

Good morning everyone and thanks for reading yet another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday, a safe space for common people preserving their hearing, not government-backed movie assassins. Today we will be talking about a peripheral issue effecting suppressed shooters: sight picture. The question (or comments) regarding the use of suppressor height sights on pistols is common – with most silencers sporting a diameter of 1.25” to 1.375”, shooters are faced with a new sight picture. While the urge to swap out sights is strong, I maintain that adding suppressor height sights is not a requirement; you can still take those hostage shots with that new silencer attached to your .40S&W Hi-Point.

Externally, the new Wolfman is still modular, but unlike its predecessor, the silencer breaks down into 2/3rds of its full length rather than a 50/50 spilt as before.
