[SHOT 2019] SilencerCo's New .22 LR Switchback and Chimera
SilencerCo is coming out with an adaptable .22 LR suppressor wherein a user can change the configuration of the tube to either match a handgun or a rifle at a hearing safe level but also coming in a very small package so as to not take too much space at the end of a muzzle. When these two portions are combined together, they form a larger suppressor that is much quieter than ear safe.
[SHOT 2019] TBA Suppressors – Quiet Integral Magic
Rumors of the death of the integral silencer are greatly exaggerated. If you remember back about a year ago, TFB traveled down to Southern Virginia to visit TBA Suppressors, a manufacturer that prides itself in the production of magically quiet integrally suppressed weapons. I was impressed at the clean lines and performance of TBA’s Sicario Ruger MKIV. So much so that I decided to invest in one of my own this year – and regular readers of my reviews (if there are any) will note that I am very careful in the places I decide to spend my gun money.
[SHOT 2019] Piedmont Cartridge 9×39 Range Day
While walking down in the basement of SHOT Show last Tuesday, I saw David Fillers of SDS Imports and he invited me to a special 9×39 event at Battlefield Vegas last Thursday. Since our resident 9×39 fan, Nathaniel F wasn’t at SHOT Show, I decided to go for him and I am glad I went. Piedmont Cartridge had a number of specially built guns chambered in 9×39.
[SHOT 2019] Griffin Armament Goes Glock + New Suppressors
Griffin Armament quietly announced a line of tubeless silencers at last week’s SHOT Show. Named the EXPLORR, the lightweight cans come in 300RUM, 6.5CM and .224, feature Griffins QD mounting system and sports a smaller footprint than other options. The Watertown, WI based company also released the 30-SDK as a ‘5.56mm-sized silencer with 30 caliber performance’. And even though they were introduced later last year, I finally got to lay hands on their new GLOCK barrels with the Minimalist Carry Compensator. The thread on device is like a thread protector with benefits.
[SHOT 2019] NEW Silencer Tech: Dead Air Armament E Brake – Blast Diverter
Dead Air Armament is known for their small, but impressive portfolio of silencers and they were in attendance at SHOT Show 2019. While they did not have any new silencers for us at this show, they did unveil some new accessories. The most notable one was their New E BRAKE or blast diverter.
[SHOT 2019] Sig Sauer Range Day – Copperhead, Canebrake, Rattler
On the Sunday before this year’s SHOT Show, TFB and TFBTV were invited to attend the Sig Sauer Range Day at the Clark County Shooting Complex about 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas. The complex itself was incredible, with bays that catered to every type of shooter imaginable. Sig had arranged for a type of ‘Opening Ceremony’ that was an awesome display of former special operations guys dropping in via parachute and assaulting a group of autonomous motorized targets. The MCX-outfitted unit was backed up by a team of former soldiers and law enforcement officer from the Sig Sauer academy. The sweet display of force lasted about 20 minutes followed by an analysis of the the guns, gear and tactics used by each of the operators.
[SHOT 2019] Thunder Beast Arms Corp. Bipod and QD .338
Thunder Beast has long been a go-to silencer for precision long-range shooters. This is in large part because the engineering that goes into their cans is as focused on things like repeatability and minimal point of impact shift as it is on noise reduction. (I have shot sub-half minute 5 shot groups while removing and replacing the unit after every shot.) This makes even more sense when you get to know the engineers, they are all long-range shooters themselves. In fact, Zak Smith (the owner) has been in the precision rifle competition field since 2005. So, when I heard they had a new bipod out I knew it was going to be worth taking a look at.
[SHOT 2019] Innovative Arms The Deception X, Prototypes And More
Marching through the Sands Expo Center for a week can be a seemingly never-ending grind. From an outsider’s point of view, SHOT is an sea of new guns and gear, but the reality is that it is also a maze of wheeled luggage and cheap knives, lubricants and ballistic nylon. But one of the many reasons I love the silencer industry so much Is that by legal definition, NFA items must be manufactured in the United States. And the the team at Innovative Arms is a prime example of a U.S. company making quality products and providing excellent customer service. I was lucky enough to spend time with IA talking about the new Deception X, a prototype MPX integral silencer and the sneaky M&P15-22.
SILENCER SATURDAY #57: 2019 SHOT Show Suppressors
Good afternoon my hush-happy friends and welcome back to another episode of TFB’s Silencer Saturday, where the quietest day of the week is the one where you spin on a suppressor. Today we have a rundown on most of the 2019 SHOT Show suppressors seen on the show floor, industry range day, Sig’s range day, and in the middle of the desert at a remote location. Unfortunately today’s recap is not all inclusive: our 20+ writers are still busy cranking out posts from their hard-earned week in Las Vegas, NV. Whatever we miss today, will show up in next week’s Silencer Saturday report.
[SHOT 2019] Franklin Armory's Reformation RS7, CZ EVO Binary Trigger
Franklin Armory had their Reformation RS7 at Range Day this year, in addition to expanding their binary trigger pack system to the CZ EVO line of pistol caliber carbines. Introduced last year at SHOT 2018, the Reformation falls in an interesting legal category wherein it isn’t a rifle because it has straight lands and grooves, but also isn’t a shotgun. Thus it cannot be classified as an SBR with its short barrel length, but is still legal to own as a firearm under the Gun Control Act.
[SHOT 2019] New Products of Strike Industries
Our partnership with Strike Industries was an amazing experience from the very beginning of SHOT Show 2019. We hosted them at our range day booth and they brought one of those high-speed low drag Phantom cameras. Anyone at the range could walk into our booth, shoot a gun, have it filmed in slow motion and then receive his video at Strike Industries booth at the exhibition. This author didn’t miss that chance, too.
[SHOT 2019] NEW Energetic Armament Vox K Silencer
The team at Energetic Armament have been hard at work in their lab, creating something… small. For the rifle silencer uninitiated, the EA Vox S has been a surprise hit, selling as fast as they are being made. Not only is the C300 alloy strong and light, but the baffle design and replaceable wipe makes the Vox universally regarded as a quiet shooter. Embracing the move to to smaller, kurz-sized silencers, EA has just released the Vox K – a 4.5”, 9.9 ounce younger brother to the original model.
[SHOT 2019] NEW TacSol TSS Integral And Aeris Rimfire Mini Silencer
Because I pray at the alter of all things quiet rimfire, Tactical Solutions has always been one of my favorite gun companies. Functional, accurate and sexy, their Pac-Lite pistol barrel uppers for the Ruger MKII/III line of handguns is a fantastic upgrade to a classic gun. Building off the successes of the line, TacSol has introduced the TSS integrally suppressed barrel combination as well as a new Aeris micro .22lr silencer.
[SHOT 2019] Yankee Hill Machine MARC Chassis And Turbo K Silencer
I’ll start off the visit to my friends at Yankee Hill Machine with a caveat you’ve heard before: my long range shooting consists of everything up to and including 100 yards. So let’s do the 50K foot overview of YHM’s new MARC chassis, then we’ll work on getting one into the hands of a long range specialist here at TFB.
[SHOT 2019] Suppressing The Ma Deuce – 3D Printed Delta P Design
A beltfed 50 caliber machinegun conjures up images of utter dominance over enemy solidiers, vehicles and structures. The muzzle blast alone is enough to strike fear into the hearts of men. Unfortunately it’s that blast that will pummel the shooter, crew and LAV drivers if the gun is vehicle mounted. Even the best helmets and ear protection can’t stop the concussive forces that will end up injuring our war fighters. Not to mention the reduced ability to communicate. So when Delta P Design set out to suppress the Ma Deuce, they weren’t chasing decibels – even though you can hold a conversation 20 feet from where the modified crew-served weapon is being fired.
Srprise! Heckler & Koch MP5 by Magpl!
In just a few short days Magpul have launched an army of new parts. Some are brand new, like the CZ Scorpion EVO 3 line of products which we told you about a few days ago and some are more of an extension of existing product lines.
Noveske rolls out Gen 4
Noveske Rifleworks continue to evolve their rifles, and the Fourth Generation is available now just before SHOT Show 2019.
NEW SHUSHER: Rugged Radiant762 LW w/ ADAPT Modular Technology
Rugged Suppressors has brought a new meaning to lightweight silencers with their latest engineered design. The Radiant762 is comprised of stellite and titanium and also affords the user the luxury to easily switch between two different lengths. This can provide the shooter different purposes for different needs in the field or at the range.
GOA Files Case Before SCOTUS To Fight Parts Of The NFA
The Gun Owners of America’s legal arm, the Gun Owners Foundation, is pressing further in their full-throated defense of Jeremy Kettler, a disabled US Army combat veteran. Mr. Kettler was convicted of possession of an unregistered firearm in violation of the National Firearms Act (NFA) in November 2016.
"Hear the Truth About Suppressors" presented by the NSSF
The National Shooting Sports Foundation ( NSSF) is a tremendous steward and champion of the shooting sports. Their work occurs through innumerable events throughout the US in educating people about firearms, but they also do smaller works as well. Some of those are simple infographics that can catch fire on social media and sometimes be even more valuable to the promotion and betterment of our cause. One simple yet highly effective one recently was about suppressors or silencers.
SILENCER SATURDAY #55: Mount Up! The Best Rifle Mounting Systems
Good afternoon baffle boys and girls and welcome to episode 55 of TFB’s Silencer Saturday, where you are encouraged to laugh at my dumb jokes – quietly. Last week we discussed the 3D printed options from Delta P Design, which coincidentally are all direct thread models – requiring no mounting systems – which I happen to believe is ultimately the best way to attach a suppressor to a firearm. Without the need for shims, spacers, muzzle devices and moving parts, your silencer is mounted quickly and easily and can be checked for concentricity without the worry of tolerance stacking. However, even in all its simplicity, a direct attachment is not always practical – an easy and quick on-and-off QD system that can double as a sacrificial blast baffle, thread protection and a flash hider or muzzle brake can be a welcome addition to a rifle.
Silencer Saturday #54: 3D Printed Silence Science – Delta P Design
Welcome back decibel dorks and thanks for joining us once again for TFB’s Silencer Saturday, where even supersonic cartridges deserve to be suppressed. Today we are taking a closer look at the suppressors from Delta P Design. As you are probably already aware, Delta P designs and builds their unique silencers through a process called additive manufacturing, more popularly referred to as 3D printed materials. Their models are made from either titanium alloys for impressive weight savings or Inconel for extreme durability. I am lucky enough to have three Delta P silencers in house for testing. Let’s take a look.
BREAKING: Hearing Protection Act Reintroduced to Congress
The Hearing Protection Act has been reintroduced to Congress by Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina. The American Suppressor Association describe the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) of 2019 as “an enhanced version of previous” legislation introduced to Congress in 2015.
Postcards from Russia's Frogmen
Do you remember the postcards from the German Kampfschwimmers? In Mother Russia they have Frogmen too and they are jealous.
SILENCER SATURDAY #53: 'Happy Q Year' And A Look Ahead To 2019
Good evening subsonic shooters and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday, where science beats feelings everyday and twice on Sundays. Hopefully you all had a great holiday and were able to spend some time with friends or family, preferably on the range. Last week we discussed the possibilities of owning a single shot repeating firearm that is either integrally suppressed or designed from the ground up to be suppressed – a modern Welrod. Whether that means waiting and investing in the B&T VP9 or building a different design all together is the real question. I received a lot of good input from readers and industry partners, some of whom have considered modern Welrod designs themselves. I’m interested in seeing where this goes. But this week I thought we could look ahead to the state of the suppressor industry in 2019 and then share some images and information I picked up from my latest trip to Q.
Mike Pappas's Cold War Ma-Duece
In an undisclosed location of Northern Utah lies a fully functional relic of the Cold War. Featured previously in Recoil Magazine, this OT-90 JPJ owned by Mike Pappas of Dead Air Armament needs no introduction. Weighing in at around 24,000 lbs, and being powered by a 19L (1,159cu in) V6 diesel, this beast wasn’t missing much when it arrived stateside. However, there was a lack of firepower on-board that needed to change.
