Walt Berger began making his own bullets by hand in his garage in 1955, which he credits with helping him shoot his way into the Benchrest Hall of Fame. Over the last sixty-five years, what started as one man’s part-time hobby has flourished into a thriving full-scale business.

Concealed Carry Corner: Choosing An Adequate Round

When it comes to picking a self-defense round, the age-old debate of 9mm vs 45 ACP instantly comes to mind. I’m almost certain there are a few guys already rushing down to the comments section defending their carry round. I’m sure you’re probably wondering where this is going so I’ll give you some background on how this article came into existence. Earlier in the week, I was checking out a local gun shop, keeping my 6ft distance, and managed to hear an older man tell a young woman she needs to carry a 22 LR pistol for self defense. The guys behind the gun counter as well as myself all immediately had a confused look at his caliber choice as an adequate round.

Subsonic 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo from Chalk 1 Munitions

If you’re in the long-range precision shooting game, by now you’re likely to be well familiar with 6.5 Creed. Designed by Hornady for Creedmoor Sports in 2007, the 6.5 Creedmoor is essentially a necked down .30 TC. A few years ago, USSOCOM (i.e. US Special Operations Command) performed a comparison test between several long-range rounds, including 6.5 Creedmoor, using SR-25, M110A1 SDMR, and Mk 20 SCAR rifles. They found that 6.5 Creed outperformed the rest – including the well-established 7.62x51mm NATO – by approximately doubling hit probability at 1000 meters, increasing effective range by almost half, negating about a third of wind drift, and doing all of this with less recoil than the 7.62×51. FN also makes an Mk48 light machine gun in this caliber, and it has also found a good deal of popularity in the civilian market among many long-range competitive shooters and some hunters. You can even get a lever-action Henry for it, dubbed the “Long Ranger”. Suffice it to say that 6.5 Creedmoor is here to stay.

Purdue and US Army Develop Explosive for Nontoxic Ammo

The U.S. Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command plays an important role in guiding the future of our warfighters’ lethality and survivability. Their mission statement is “To provide the research, engineering, and analytical expertise to deliver capabilities that enable the Army to deter and, when necessary, decisively defeat any adversary now and in the future.” To this end, they engage in scientific pursuits like advancements in weaponry, exploring quantum communication, improving electronic warfare effectiveness, and working on new ways to purify water in the field. At the heart of these endeavors lies the Army Research Laboratory. These military scientists have been responsible for many breakthroughs in areas such as grenade-launched drones and better 3D printing. Now they have teamed up with academic scientists at Purdue University to develop lead-free explosive material that could be used to produce nontoxic ammo, as announced in a July 16th press release from Purdue.

Chinese Scientists 3D Print Gunpowder Substitute

3D printed firearms, emptying 3D printed magazines to fire 3D printed bullets against targets protected by 3D printed armor. It looks like the only element missing from the equation is to be able to 3D print gunpowder. Now, fittingly again thanks to China, we may see that too. However it may take a while, if ever, for this to become another tool in the toolbox of 3D printing gunsmiths across the world. Let’s see why.

Who doesn’t enjoy shooting suppressed .22s? Terrifically quiet, smooth and easy-shooting, and far less expensive to blow through rounds than probably any other gun you own except a Daisy Red Ryder. Tons of people enjoy hushed plinking for fun, and many shooters also use .22 firearms for more purposed endeavors like small varmint hunting and rimfire competitions. TFB publishes the Rimfire Report which routinely hits on suppressed .22 fun, and Silencer Saturdays frequently delve into this baby bore as well. One potential issue with .22, however, is that it tends to run quite dirty. But now  CCI Ammunition has declared they have come up with a solution to this: Clean-22 Suppressor ammo.

Ammo Manufacturer, Stand 1 Armory, Returns After Three-Year Hiatus

For several years, many shooters looking for bulk premium remanufactured ammo turned to Stand 1 Armory. The Dallas, Texas-based bullet farm was first incorporated in 2013 and soon became a popular source of ammo for shooters of many different calibers and styles. Offerings included a variety of 9mm, .40, .45, .223, .308, 300BLK rounds, and more. Stand 1 Armory struck a particular chord in the competitive shooting community, with their “chubbies”. These 147 grain 9mm reduced power (-P) loads were purpose-built for events like 3 Gun, USPSA, IDPA, and others in which such a load could prove advantageous. The -P characteristics were intended to allow shooters to still knock down steel plates during matches, but provide decreased felt recoil and enable faster reacquisition and followup than with punchier loads.

Hornady Announces a New Contender in the Caliber Wars: 6mm ARC

Hornady Manufacturing, widely regarded as one of the top ammo companies in the industry, has made quite a splash with their June 3, 2020 announcement. TFB recently hinted at a new SAAMI accepted cartridge, and now it’s here. Meet Hornady’s newest player: the 6mm ARC, or Advanced Rifle Cartridge. Purpose-built to optimize the capabilities of AR-platform firearms, the basic idea behind this new caliber is an attempt to find the sweet spot between the smaller traditional 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem, which is sometimes criticized for being perhaps a bit anemic, and larger calibers like .308 Win, which can raise issues such as increased weight and felt recoil with decreased mag capacity. With the 6ARC, Hornady believes they have landed on that happy medium – claiming that it “does what much larger cartridges can and everything that smaller cartridges can’t”, and “delivers optimum all-range performance and barrel life”. Hornady’s official press release reads as follows.

Last week we discussed some buying tips for silencer newbies and many of you added advice from your own personal experiences in the comments section. As always, thank you for reading and sharing your knowledge. This week I wanted to touch on selecting ammunition for longer 9mm platforms. Specifically, H&K SP5 subsonic ammunition choices.
