In recent weeks, sales of several items including bleach, disinfectant sprays, surgical masks, toilet paper, and bottled water have skyrocketed. Spurred on by fears pertaining to the spread of the Corona Virus (COVID-19), several other items including ammunition and survival gear have seen a similar jump in sales numbers according to several retailers.

Steinel Ammunition is a manufacturer of premium vintage military ammunition as well as hunting and self-defense ammunition. Steinel has produced several vintage ammunition for both rifles and pistols including 8×22 Nambu, and 7.7×58 Arisaka. The Italian 6.5x52mm Carcano has been Steinel’s latest venture into the vintage military ammunition market, but what makes it different than modern offerings?

Back in March 2019, US SOCOM selected the Barrett MRAD to fulfill their requirement for an Advanced Sniper Rifle (ASR). At the end of last year, Nighforce’s MIL-SPEC ATACR 5-25×56 Dayscope and their MIL-SPEC ATACR 7-35×56 Long Range Dayscope l were selected as the go-to optics for the new SOCOM ASR. Now Berger have announced that they have been sub-contracted to produce .300 Norma Magnum and .338 Norma Magnum for SOCOM’s ASRs.

For all of the 10mm Auto lovers and the people who have jumped on that recent surging bandwagon, there is good news in the way of ammunition because CCI is now offering their Blazer Brass in 10mm with a 180 Grain FMJ load. The CCI Blazer Brass offering has always been viewed as by many shooters as an affordable, reliable option for target shooting. It will always go “Bang!”… is safe with your firearm… and uses a preferred brass casing which is more gentle on firearms and desirable for reloaders. In 2019, Blackwater Worldwide re-entered the firearms and ammunition market in the USA and began manufacturing ammunition, tactical blades, and suppressors. Today they are proud to announce the Blackwater Contractor Grade 124 grain 9mm hollow point ammunition.

Whether or not 22LR is a suitable self-defense round is a hotly debated subject in the firearms community. Many will immediately discount it as too weak or ineffective to be used as a self-defense caliber. Others will say that it is entirely capable of taking down a target with the right shot placement. A couple of weeks ago, Wilson Combat announced that their 300 HAM’R cartridge has been standardized by SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute). And a couple of days ago, the actual drawings were published on the SAAMI website. In their press release, Wilson Combat express their gratitude to Starline Brass, Western Powders and SIG Sauer for assistance during the development of the cartridge and additionally thank SIG Sauer for submitting the cartridge to SAAMI.

Ten by one hundred millimeters or one centimeter by one decimeter, if you will – that’s the name of the new cartridge by Blackwater Ammunition. The 10×100 BWA is designed to be a long-range precision shooting cartridge that outperforms the .50 BMG in range and trajectory departments while remaining within the dimensions of .50 BMG cartridge.

Last week we discussed one of my favorite topics in the firearms world – suppressed subsonic pistol caliber carbines. For those progressives out there who have sworn off compact pistol carbines in favor of rifle PDW’s, we have a treat for you this week. Dead Air has finally announced the release of the Nomad-L, a longer and quieter version of the popular Nomad-30 released in late 2018. But does size, specifically length, matter that much? (I’ve always heard that it’s ok, size doesn’t matter, followed by sobbing and sympathy hugs).

Looks like in 2020 the little .22 LR will undergo some metamorphosis and turn into a completely different animal. A couple of months ago we talked about solid copper bullets being developed for .22 LR by Lehigh Defence. And today, we’ll take a look at experiments done by another company known for making solid projectiles – Cutting Edge Bullets. They have shared on their social media pages a couple of pictures of .22 LR cartridges loaded with solid copper heeled spitzer bullets.

A lot of people within reloading circles have been wondering, “where has all the powder gone” as of late? With Hodgdon Powder providing the handloading community with so many popular brands of smokeless propellants – Hodgdon, IMR, and Winchester – they have some answers for us in this 2020 Update that was posted to their Facebook page on Friday, January 31st.

Hornady has upgraded a number of their different lines of ammunition, to include a subsonic line for popular lever-action cartridges. In addition, they have a whole new line of gun safes that use RFID technology to open. These chips can be embedded in everyday objects such as a phone case allowing users to activate the doors to the cases.

Federal’s new Terminal Ascent ammunition aims to deliver better accuracy and terminal ballistics at longer ranges with their Slipstream tipped rounds and new AccuChanels. In addition, Federal’s new HammerDown ammo was designed for greatly improved performance and reliability in lever action rifles. 

CCI highlighted some of their latest .22 LR offerings, to include a new subsonic line with a polymer coating that allows cleaner shooting than normal .22 LR rounds as less copper is shed in the barrel and suppressor when the rounds are fired. CCI also has a Breast Cancer awareness brand with proceeds donated to support cancer treatments and research. And finally, CCI has partnered with .22 Plinkster and MeatEater to bring the respective Youtube channel’s favorite ammunition offerings to market.

Norma introduced their award-winning NRA Golden Bullseye Monolithic Hollow Point (MHP) line in the United States with a 9x19mm (108-grain) and a .380 Auto entry (85-grain bullet). Key points on the MHP is that it is monolithic as opposed to blended materials as can be found with other hollow points on the market right now. Norma plans on expanding the line throughout the year with other calibers.

American Reserve Munitions A.R.M are anything but conventional.  They are based out of Horseshoe Bend Idaho and specialize in exotic ammunition production for their own company as well as OEM production.  Most of their projectiles are lead-free, not for the tree-hugging California reasons but rather for the increased performance that can be attained through the use of solids or polymer/ceramic cores.  

True Velocity and Sierra Bullets have partnered to introduce composite cased commercial ammunition that should be available in 2020. The cartridges will be composed of True Velocity’s steel-base polymer cases loaded with Sierra bullets. This ammunition will be initially available in .308 Winchester with more caliber options such as 6.5mm Creedmoor to be added in the future.

Not wanting to wait for SHOT 2020, Hornady released most of their new product information back in October 2019.  Most of the buzz centered around the new A-Tips. They are designed and packaged to be as consistent as possible.  The aluminum tips are precision machined and each bullet is sequentially packaged ie in a box of 100 you will have bullets 1001 to 1100 from the press.  This leads to greater consistency and as we know in the long-range game consistency is king. 

At SHOT Show 2020, Browning Ammunition announced the addition of three new cartridges to their catalog – 6mm Creedmoor, 28 Nosler and 350 Legend. In total, there are seven new loads added to the following five ammunition lines: BXC, BXS, BXR, Long Range PRO and FMJ. Let’s see how the company describes each of these ammunition lines and what loads of the new cartridges are included in them.

At SHOT Show 2020, Nosler announced a new .270 caliber addition to their cartridge family – the 27 Nosler. In their press release, Nosler describes this cartridge as an offering “that redefines performance as radically now as the 270 Winchester did upon its introduction in 1925“.

Sons of Liberty Gun Works, a boutique AR-15 manufacturer, has introduced the Broadsword at SHOT 2020. The Broadsword is a Precision Rifle Shooting focused AR-15. It is specifically designed as a law enforcement marksman rifle, that excels at short range high-pressure engagements.

Norma has introduced an entirely new line of ammunition that is perfect for an assortment of cartridges in close-up training drills. They debuted their Range & Training Frangibles at SHOT Show this year during the “Industry Day at the Range” so as many people could shoot them on steel as possible, and experience these frangibles for themselves.

At SHOT Show 2020, besides the HammerDown lever-action rifle ammunition line, Federal Premium also introduced a new ignition system for muzzleloading rifles called FireStick. This system is designed to work with  Traditions NitroFire series break action .50 caliber muzzleloaders. It consists of the FireStick unprimed roll-crimped plastic shell loaded with a black powder charge, the projectile and standard 209 shotgun primer.
