SILENCER SATURDAY #109: The 2020 SHOT Suppressor Show

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by our friends at Yankee Hill Machine. Yesterday marked the end of SHOT Show 2020 which is always an awesome, but grueling week of early mornings, late nights and dozens of miles traveled on foot. Unfortunately for me, I spent most of my time in meetings for a special project we will be debuting in a few weeks. Which means I didn’t really set foot on the floor until Thursday afternoon. Thanks to our best-in-class team of writers and videographers, we were able to bring you a high volume of interesting new releases. I spent my limited time on the floor putting together images for a 2020 SHOT Suppressor Show.

[SHOT 2020] Shootable Art from Cabot Guns and Alchemy Custom Weaponry

Ah, the SHOT Show lower level dungeon.  It can be a place of darkness and despair, filled with the noxious fumes of B.O. and burnt food court fare.  In this maelstrom, however are hidden gems.  Gleaming like a beacon through this gloom was the display of Cabot Guns and Alchemy Custom Weaponry.  Made with such materials as fossilized mammoth tusk, tyrannosaurus rex bones, and the occasional meteorite and with prices starting in the $2000’s and up to “if you have to ask…”, I view these less as firearms and more as art pieces you can shoot.

[SHOT 2020] New Aimpoint Comp M5B RDS Revealed

Brannon LeBouef, of NOLATAC, takes a minute to speak with Aimpoint about their new COMP M5B. The Bravo means that it now has adjustable turrets that allow for bullet drop compensation instead of holdovers for their very popular line of COMP red dots. The COMP series takes a AA battery and has an estimated 50,000 hour battery life. Now the Bravo version will allow for dialing up and down windage and elevation at various distances with the BDC being caliber specific. Also, the turrets are user swappable, so if you buy a COMP M5B with the 5.56mm turrets and then want to put it on a 300BLK gun, you can just purchase replacement turrets instead of a whole new optic. This will come in handy for hunters especially who use red dots for large game. Expected out for sale in the Spring of this year, the Aimpoint COMP M5B seems like a great upgrade for hunting, defensive, and competition shooters alike.

[SHOT 2020] Geissele Super Precision 1-6 First Impressions

Down at the end of Industry Day at the Range was Geissele with a ton of their rifles set up with various sighting devices.  Of most import was their new Super Precision 1-6 optic.  Mounted to the rifles with their Super Precision Magnified Optic Mount, it was fun and easy to get on targets out to 200 yards (purely a limitation of the range, not the optic).  Clarity and light transmission through the 30mm tube seemed good, even when shooting from under cover on an overcast day.

[SHOT 2020] Hands on with Tactical Solutions' Owyhee Take-down Bolt .22 and Integrally Suppressed Barrels

The biggest new release from Tactical Solutions (TacSol) is actually quite small.  Weighing in at only 3.9 lbs and breaking down just forward of the receiver, the Owyhee mates a Magpul Backpacker stock with TacSol’s new Owyhee bolt action receiver and barrel.   TFB’s Pete has done a more in depth write up on the details, but seeing it in person was pretty neat.  Takedown and breakdown was easy to accomplish, as long as one remembers to retract the bolt first so as not to damage the extractor when slightly twisting the barrel for removal.
