The Rimfire Report: The Fletcher Rifle Works OpenTop Takedown Rifle

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we had fellow writer Patrick O. share his SIG Sauer 522 Classic rimfire rifle. Sadly the SIG 552 is out of production and parts are slowly drying up as the rifle falls further into history. A big thank you to Patrick for sharing that one with us! This week we’re just coming off of 10/22 day, and as a coincidence, I just happened to pick up one of the newest rifles from Fletcher Rifleworks – the new OpenTop Takedown rifle. This new take on the Fletcher Rifle Works OpenTop 11/22 receiver adds on a premium takedown-equipped barrel and receiver, as well as a longer top Picatinny rail that extends the full length of the top of the receiver making it much more suitable to use with traditional riflescopes. While I haven’t been able to take the rifle to the range just yet, I figured today I’d give you all a closer look at the rifle in advance!

The Rimfire Report: SIG Sauer 522 Classic Overview

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many types of guns, ammunition, shooting sports, and history! In this installment, we’ll take a look at a rimfire 550-series SIG rifle. The SIG Sauer 556 rifle was born from the iconic Swiss SG 550 series. The 556 quickly emerged as a testament to SIG Sauer’s commitment to precision engineering and firearm innovation. Introduced in the early 2000s, the 556 quickly gained recognition for its exceptional accuracy, reliability, and versatility. Its gas piston operating system set it apart from traditional direct-impingement designs, delivering smoother recoil and enhanced durability. In response to American market demand and evolving shooting preferences, SIG Sauer introduced the SIG Sauer 522 in 2009. This variant, chambered in .22LR, retained the 556’s renowned ergonomics and aesthetics while offering a more cost-effective and recreational shooting experience.

TFB Review: The FN Guardian – FN America's Most Affordable AR-15

The name FN can spark either controversy or praise depending on who you ask about them, and more importantly, what exact product you’re talking about. A little while back I had the rare opportunity to run an FN SCAR 17 absolutely ragged for about three days in the desert – something that I think not a lot of civilian rifles ever get to experience. While the SCAR 17 nearly killed the Trijicon VCOG that was attached to it, the rifle itself managed to keep running, without any malfunctions for the entire week in which about 500+ rounds of .308 ball ammo were shot through it. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has had extensive experience with FN’s vast product line as they carry a reputation for having some of the best “combat-proven” equipment in the industry. However, the big downside to all that is that most of their highly sought-after AR-15 rifles and barrels are somewhat overpriced according to some. One prime example of this is FN’s 15 DRM3 and TAC 3 rifles which both cost nearly $2000 but are known for being some of the best “duty grade” off-the-shelf AR-15s available. This is simply not the case with the new FN Guardian, which comes in at an MSRP of $999 and can now be found for a street price of around $875. But does the FN Guardian still maintain the legendary reliability and accuracy that FN’s AR-15s are known for? We’ll find out in today’s review!

The Rimfire Report: The B14R SOLUS – An Unholy Combination of Parts

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many types of guns, ammunition, shooting sports, and history! Last week we featured one of our very own readers’ homemade firearms. Axel’s dedicated 22LR SVD build was quite impressive, if not a bit finicky in the reliability department. A majority of you expressed interest in having his design picked up and refined by a major manufacturer. While I too, wish something like this would happen, it’s probably not in the realm of possibility. This week we’re taking a look at one of my own tinkering projects I’ve been working with over the last couple of months. This project, which I am calling the B14R SOLUS, is a combination of Bergara’s B14R rimfire trainer barreled action, and Aero Precision’s SOLUS Competition chassis and a smattering of other high-end parts and accessories. Why? Most of the fun I get from rimfire is just cheap shooting and training. Since I had the parts lying around and the capability, I simply wanted to do something in the complete opposite direction of “practical” or even “value-conscious.” The B14R SOLUS is supposed to be overpriced, and overbuilt and today we’ll take a look at all the parts I’ve put into it, as well as what ammunition plays best with this unholy combination of rimfire parts.
