TFB Review: MODTAC U-RAC (Universal Rail Attach Coupler)

Thankfully, suppressor use and ownership have become more and more common in recent years. As shooters become more aware of the passive dangers involved with shooting, like lead poisoning and hearing loss, steps are being taken to reduce health hazards. Suppressors are probably the most effective tool we have against hearing loss. If you didn’t hear that last sentence, it might be time to pick one up! However, silencers (or suppressors, use whichever you want, nobody cares) have some drawbacks. The primary problem is that they get very hot. This means mirage during precision shooting. It also means some very hot pants during rifle-to-pistol transitions. MODTAC, a company local to me in Colorado, makes rigid suppressor shields to mitigate both of these issues. They have a few models but today we’re looking at the MODTAC U-RAC.

H&K MR556A1 SBR From the Film "Zero Dark Thirty" Up for Auction

TV and film guns are always going to be popular collector’s items and while some of them are often creations directly from the bench of a deranged gunsmith, some prop movie guns are meant to be literal representations of real-world firearms. In this particular example on Gunbroker, we see an H&K MR556A1 SBR that is intended to resemble an HK416D that was used by the US Navy Seals during the raid on Bin Landen’s compound back in 2011. This firearm was converted for use with blanks by Point Blank Props’ for use during the filming of the movie Zero Dark Thirty, a Hollywood thriller based on the events surrounding the hunt for Osama Bin Laden. What’s cool about this particular collector’s item is that instead of its movie-ready black firing adapter configuration, this particular prop gun has been restored to work with live ammunition.

BIGGER BLK: Announcing the B&T USA Advanced Precision Rifle In 8.6BLK

Physics is an unrelenting mistress, especially when we are discussing terminal ballistics.  I am the last guy you want explaining high school physics, but Newton’s laws of motion apply whether you are a target shooter, a hunter, or a soldier. All things being equal more mass traveling at higher velocities will result in a greater transfer of energy. Factoring subsonic velocities into the equation makes transferring that energy even more challenging. B&T USA has stepped into the world of bigger subsonic cartridges with the B&T USA Advanced Precision Rifle in 8.6BLK.
