Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we discussed the various steps to take when training strictly for concealed carry. This week, I wanted to look at some new items hitting the market and a fundamental shift in the gun community from what used to be normal 5-10 years ago. Small carry bags are becoming more popular among younger people and female shooters for ease of carry and simplicity. Not everyone agrees with carrying off body which is valid, but for those of you who do, there isn’t a ton of information out there. Let’s take a closer look at tactical or practical carry bags.

The Riflespeed Gas Control system is a quick and easy way to get your rifle up and running in a variety of situations when it just isn’t running right. The main advantage of the Riflespeed Gas Control system is that you can have a much longer handguard in a lot of cases since the system can be adjusted without tools, just using your hand. The Riflspeed system is being updated with a new Quick Lever Kit which allows the user to more easily adjust the gas controls, even if the handguard completely covers the controls.

Caldwell produces a wide range of shooting gear. From targets to rests to chronographs, they are a brand found in most sporting goods stores. One of their key product areas is shooting rests and sandbags. They also make the Precision Turret Rest, which is a hybrid between a machine gun tripod and a clamp-type rest typically used on tall tripods. I bought one to see how it works and thought that would be worth sharing with you all.

The Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the Black Hawk Down incident, is a pivotal event in modern military history that took place in Somalia on October 3-4, 1993.  This battle, part of Operation Gothic Serpent, was a mission aimed at capturing key lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. As U.S. and coalition forces found themselves in an unexpected and intense firefight, they relied on a range of firearms and equipment to navigate the urban warfare environment.

One of the most critical components when it comes to carrying a firearm is your belt. Without a stable platform to hold the weight of your pistol, holster, magazines, and IFAK, you’re in for a frustrating and embarrassing afternoon at the range. Of course, there are different considerations for concealed and overt carry, so let’s focus on the latter today. My wife recently attended the A Girl and A Gun National Conference and has since been in the market for a new battle belt. Due to the consistency of 5.11 Tactical’s gear, we thought the Maverick Battle Belt would be a great place to start. This is my…well, our review.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes courtesy of my inability to keep my wallet closed. The Karabiner 43, or K.43, is a Second World War era semi-automatic rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser. Sometimes referred to as “Hitler’s Garand” (most notably by the book of that title) this rifle was created to replace the more finicky Gewehr 41. The Gewehr 43 (G.43) uses a gas system very similar to that of an SVT-40, a three-part short-stroke gas piston. In fact, a side-by-side comparison of the SVT-40’s gas system and the Gewehr 43’s gas system shows some parts that look almost interchangeable. Though of course, they are not.

This week, I wanted to talk about a training I did with some local trainers about handgun manipulation in tight spaces. They went through how to properly draw a firearm from retention as well as how to clear rooms with less-than-ideal entryways. Let’s take a closer look at the answer to the question “Is retention shooting a good idea?”.

Gentex (Ops-Core’s Parent Company) has introduced an update to the FAST Bump Helmet. The most notable change is the removal of the molded shroud that was originally designed to accommodate airborne operations. Instead, it now features the same Lightweight Modular Bungee Shroud found on other helmets in the range. Additionally, the updated FAST Bump Helmet is equipped with PowerPath ARC Rails, allowing users to route cables behind the rail system, ensuring they are kept out of the way during use. These improvements enhance the versatility and functionality of the helmet for a wider range of users and operational needs. No weights have been given at this time and it will be interesting to see if these new helmets are lighter or heavier than the older models.

Bollé Safety is continuing to add to its already extensive ANSI-rated eyewear collection with the announcement that two new lifestyle-oriented pairs will be coming soon- the new ALTUS and KNOX sunglasses. These new pairs of Z87.1-rated sunglasses are meant to be lightweight and comfortable, but still suitable for range use or other tasks and jobs that require protective eyewear.

Django Unchained is one of my favorite movies of all time ever since I saw it back in 2012. This South-Western revenge flick comes from the legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and offers up some incredible visuals, a truckload of squibs, and some period-correct firearms. One of the armorers on the film was Larry Zanoff and this comes to no surprise as he has worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest films over the last 30 years.

Love it or hate it, the GBRS Group HYDRA mount is an optics and LAM riser that certainly has had a polarizing effect on the Gun Community. Coming in at a price of $349, it was inevitable that some knockoffs would be coming down the line to fill the “Just as Good” void. In general, it is good to have rules when carrying a concealed firearm. Certain situations challenge these rules and in certain situations, it makes sense to even break these rules we set for ourselves. I’ll give you examples of situations where it made sense to go against conventional thinking and go against my own rules. Let’s take a look at what carry rules to break in certain situations.

SIG Sauer has issued a safety bulletin regarding light-bearing holsters. Without naming any specific model of handgun, SIG is warning end users that holsters that accommodate weapon-mounted lights have larger openings and can cause unintentional discharges. This safety bulletin comes against a background of recurrent claims that the P320 fires without the trigger being pulled, including a recent video from a police station where a P320 fired while in a holster.

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited out to Beaverton OR to take a tour of the Leupold factory with a number of other outdoor journalists. Our tour began in the beautiful front lobby of Leupold HQ where our tour guide Nic Kytlica gave us a brief history of the company.
