Concealed Carry Corner: Tactical or Practical Carry Bags

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we discussed the various steps to take when training strictly for concealed carry. If you missed that article, click the link here to check it out. This week, I wanted to look at some new items hitting the market and a fundamental shift in the gun community from what used to be normal 5-10 years ago. Small carry bags are becoming more popular among younger people and female shooters for ease of carry and simplicity. Not everyone agrees with carrying off body which is valid, but for those of you who do, there isn’t a ton of information out there. Let’s take a closer look at tactical or practical carry bags.

Even More Control – The Riflespeed Gas Controls Quick Lever Kit

The Riflespeed Gas Control system is a quick and easy way to get your rifle up and running in a variety of situations when it just isn’t running right. The main advantage of the Riflespeed Gas Control system is that you can have a much longer handguard in a lot of cases since the system can be adjusted without tools, just using your hand. The Riflspeed system is being updated with a new Quick Lever Kit which allows the user to more easily adjust the gas controls, even if the handguard completely covers the controls.

TFB Review: Caldwell Precision Turret Shooting Rest

Caldwell produces a wide range of shooting gear. From targets to rests to chronographs, they are a brand found in most sporting goods stores. One of their key product areas is shooting rests and sandbags. They also make the Precision Turret Rest, which is a hybrid between a machine gun tripod and a clamp-type rest typically used on tall tripods. I bought one to see how it works and thought that would be worth sharing with you all.

Guns of a Conflict: The Battle of Mogadishu

The Battle of Mogadishu, also known as the Black Hawk Down incident, is a pivotal event in modern military history that took place in Somalia on October 3-4, 1993.  This battle, part of Operation Gothic Serpent, was a mission aimed at capturing key lieutenants of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid. As U.S. and coalition forces found themselves in an unexpected and intense firefight, they relied on a range of firearms and equipment to navigate the urban warfare environment.

TFB Review: The 5.11 Tactical Maverick Battle Belt

One of the most critical components when it comes to carrying a firearm is your belt. Without a stable platform to hold the weight of your pistol, holster, magazines, and IFAK, you’re in for a frustrating and embarrassing afternoon at the range. Of course, there are different considerations for concealed and overt carry, so let’s focus on the latter today. My wife recently attended the A Girl and A Gun National Conference and has since been in the market for a new battle belt. Due to the consistency of 5.11 Tactical’s gear, we thought the Maverick Battle Belt would be a great place to start. This is my…well, our review.

POTD: The Karabiner 43, Hitler's Garand

Today’s Photo of the Day comes courtesy of my inability to keep my wallet closed. The Karabiner 43, or K.43, is a Second World War era semi-automatic rifle chambered in 8mm Mauser. Sometimes referred to as “Hitler’s Garand” (most notably by the book of that title) this rifle was created to replace the more finicky Gewehr 41. The Gewehr 43 (G.43) uses a gas system very similar to that of an SVT-40, a three-part short-stroke gas piston. In fact, a side-by-side comparison of the SVT-40’s gas system and the Gewehr 43’s gas system shows some parts that look almost interchangeable. Though of course, they are not.

Concealed Carry Corner: Is Retention Shooting A Good Idea?

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about the best carry positions based on your daily tasks. If you missed last week’s episode, be sure to click the link here to check out the article. This week, I wanted to talk about a training I did with some local trainers about handgun manipulation in tight spaces. They went through how to properly draw a firearm from retention as well as how to clear rooms with less-than-ideal entryways. Let’s take a closer look at the answer to the question “Is retention shooting a good idea?”.

Gentex Updates Ops-Core FAST Bump Helmet

Gentex (Ops-Core’s Parent Company) has introduced an update to the FAST Bump Helmet. The most notable change is the removal of the molded shroud that was originally designed to accommodate airborne operations. Instead, it now features the same Lightweight Modular Bungee Shroud found on other helmets in the range. Additionally, the updated FAST Bump Helmet is equipped with PowerPath ARC Rails, allowing users to route cables behind the rail system, ensuring they are kept out of the way during use. These improvements enhance the versatility and functionality of the helmet for a wider range of users and operational needs. No weights have been given at this time and it will be interesting to see if these new helmets are lighter or heavier than the older models.

The Guns of "Django Unchained"

Django Unchained is one of my favorite movies of all time ever since I saw it back in 2012. This South-Western revenge flick comes from the legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and offers up some incredible visuals, a truckload of squibs, and some period-correct firearms. One of the armorers on the film was Larry Zanoff and this comes to no surprise as he has worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest films over the last 30 years.

Concealed Carry Corner: Best Carry Spots For Daily Tasks

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week I talked about some of the rules people choose to break when they concealed carry for one reason or another. If you happened to miss that, be sure to check out the link here to give it a read. This week, I wanted to go over some of the questions I get from people about the best way to carry in certain situations. It can be hard to know exactly what the best route is for various situations, so I decided to make a list of the most common questions to go over. Let’s take a look at the best carry spots for daily tasks.

TFB Behind The Gun Podcast #85: Who is Varusteleka? With CEO Jari Lane

Varusteleka has fast become one of my favorite clothing brands, mostly due to their judicious use of Merino Wool in most of their in-house designed products. Beyond that, they are one of a select few places online where I know it’s absolutely safe to purchase military surplus gear without having it misidentified. Varusteleka is Europe’s largest military surplus provider and one of the largest gear providers as well. This year they once again hosted Finnish Brutality 2023 in their home country, and their CEO Jari Lane is and always has been instrumental in the event. In addition to helping organize the event, Jari also puts a lot of time, effort, and thought into designing each stage for a brutality event. Today Jari and I discuss Varusteleka’s rich company history in their 20 years of operation, how they’re celebrating, and what plans Jari and his team have for both Varusteleka and the Finnish Brutality competition in the years to come.

Love it or hate it, the GBRS Group HYDRA mount is an optics and LAM riser that certainly has had a polarizing effect on the Gun Community. Concealed Carry Corner: Carry Rules To Break

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we took a look at some of the best to worst carry positions when concealing a firearm. If you happened to miss that article, click the link here to check it out. This week, I want to go over a few different topics I have recently thought about. In general, it is good to have rules when carrying a concealed firearm. Certain situations challenge these rules and in certain situations, it makes sense to even break these rules we set for ourselves. I’ll give you examples of situations where it made sense to go against conventional thinking and go against my own rules. Let’s take a look at what carry rules to break in certain situations.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 62: More Guns and Gear for the Gun Guys

Hello and welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 62! We’re back again with some fresh deals from some of our favorite online retailers for guns, ammunition, gear, and more. Right now we are in a pretty peculiar spot when it comes to gun availability and pricing. While prices are definitely up across the board, things are more or less pretty stable right now and nothing is overwhelmingly upsetting the current pricing on common ammunition types like 9mm and 5.56, or the availability of parts or components (except for perhaps match-grade 22LR ammunition). Anyway, here’s this week’s roundup of deals for TFB Weekly Web Deals 62!

TFB Review: Magpul DAKA V800 GRID Organizer – Initial Impressions

For a long time, I have struggled with a pile of cases and foam that have accumulated over the years.  Something I imagine many gun owners can relate to is the pile of soft and hard cases that will inevitably stack up as you acquire firearms.  This problem is aggravated even more if you have pelican cases.  Not only will you have multiple bulky hard cases but piles of replacement foam cut into specific configurations for certain loadouts. That’s where the Magpul DAKA organizer comes in.

Concealed Carry Corner: The Mythical Do-All Carry Pistol

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we took a look at the importance of magazines when it comes to your carry pistol. If you happened to miss that article, be sure to click the link here to check it out. This week, I want to talk about a common topic for people who have become comfortable with carrying a concealed firearm but tend to shuffle between full-size handguns and sub-compact depending on the season and time of year. People who reach this point often talk about the mythical do-all size pistol that can be carried all year round comfortably. Every person is different but there are certainly a few models that can fill the spot of that particular need. Let’s take a look at some options for the mythical do-all carry pistol.

Top 6 Guns of Mission Impossible Series

The Mission Impossible film series is one of those rare things in the film that seem to get better with the more entries they put out. Since 1996, Ethan Hunt a.k.a. Tom Cruise, and the gang has been giving filmgoers, and movie buffs more than a few reasons to buy some expensive popcorn, and take a seat in their local movie theater. From the elaborate plot lines and the death-defying stunts, the series seems to always find a way to stay fresh. The Mission Impossible series is not particularly well known for its gunplay but does feature some interesting firearms from throughout the years. With the seventh installment of the Mission Impossible series hitting screens a few weeks ago, I figured this would be a good time to take a look at some of the guns from the film series. A quick disclaimer, though, I will only be covering one gun from each film in my criteria for picking each gun solely based on its functionality, or how unique it is. So without further ado, let’s get into the list.
