The Rimfire Report: The Italian-Made Sovereign SM64 Takedown 22

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its guns, ammunition, shooting sports, and history. Last week we dove into a relatively obscure semi-auto 22 Magnum rimfire rifle, the Excel Arms MR-22 Accelerator. This American-made rifle obviously wasn’t very successful, however, these rifles definitely still garner about $600 on auction sites meaning at least a few gun owners out there like to have them around. This week we’re getting into another obscure rimfire rifle, this time from Italy – the Sovereign SM64 Takedown chambered in 22LR. This is another early example of a 22LR takedown rifle that I’ve yet to run into and so once again we’ll be going off of people I’ve talked to about the gun, as well as what we’ve been able to glean from the online archives discussing it.

Top Range Essentials For Training On Your Own

Throughout the year, I will take friends out to shoot for the first time. I will often give them 3-4 hours of instruction at a time and will typically do this 5-6 times before I say they have enough base knowledge to continue on their own. I love introducing new people into the gun community, but whenever I do this, the first question from these new shooters is what they need to get to practice on their own.  Not everything on this list is essential by any means but there are a few things that helped me progress as a shooter and help track my progress. Starting out, using simple targets like paper plates taped to a piece of wood is good enough. Most things can be practiced with dry firing as well but let’s take a look at the top range essentials for training on your own.

Welcome back to Wheelgun Wednesday!  This week, we are taking a look at the most hotly anticipated and highly valued firearm to hit the auction block in Rock Island Auction Company’s premier auction in December.  Normally, a gold-plated and engraved 1st Generation Colt Single Action Army would be a hot item in its own right.  This particular model, however, has some serious historical value, having been inscribed and gifted to Pancho Villa in 1917.

The Rimfire Report: The Obscure Excel Arms MR-22 Accelerator Rifle

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many different types of firearms, ammunition types, shooting competitions, and rich history! Last week we briefly looked at the new Fletcher Rifle Works OpenTop Takedown rifle. From my initial testing of the rifle last week things seem to be shaping up well for the unique take of the 10/22 takedown. I should have a full review for you guys soon, complete with a comprehensive test on how well the rifle holds zero while having its top rail section removed, as well as during routine takedown. This week I wanted to share a somewhat obscure and oft-forgotten rimfire series of rifles (and pistols) that can still be bought today. Today we’re talking about the Exel Arms MR-22 Accelerator Rifle. These unique rifles have a pretty interesting reputation online and today we’ll dive into all of that to see if you might want to pick one up for yourself.

Guns of "The Rundown" Movie

While being a film from a time before “The Rock” really became “The Rock”, the movie The Rundown seems to have been largely forgotten however I think it’s a movie with some pretty interesting firearms and firearm manipulation. I’m not aware of any other film where the protagonist tears up a town of henchmen with akimbo pump-action shotguns.

TFB REVIEW: The Trijicon RMR HD Red Dot Sight

I have carried a GLOCK 45 MOS every day for over a year in an inside the waistband holster. Equipped with a Surefire 300 Ultra and a Trijicon RMR, this is my perfect EDC gun for almost every situation.  But I didn’t fully appreciate the power of a slide-mounted red dot until I attended a basic two-day optics training class. We’ll talk more about the training in a bit, but my gun with the RMR was the only one that didn’t suffer from sort of optic failure during the drills. Now, officially announced last month, the Trijicon RMR HD adds features and functionality – including a forward facing light sensor – to an already bulletproof optic system for pistols. Let’s take a look.

The Rimfire Report: The Fletcher Rifle Works OpenTop Takedown Rifle

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we had fellow writer Patrick O. share his SIG Sauer 522 Classic rimfire rifle. Sadly the SIG 552 is out of production and parts are slowly drying up as the rifle falls further into history. A big thank you to Patrick for sharing that one with us! This week we’re just coming off of 10/22 day, and as a coincidence, I just happened to pick up one of the newest rifles from Fletcher Rifleworks – the new OpenTop Takedown rifle. This new take on the Fletcher Rifle Works OpenTop 11/22 receiver adds on a premium takedown-equipped barrel and receiver, as well as a longer top Picatinny rail that extends the full length of the top of the receiver making it much more suitable to use with traditional riflescopes. While I haven’t been able to take the rifle to the range just yet, I figured today I’d give you all a closer look at the rifle in advance!

TFB Weekly Web Deals 67: No Ammo? Time to Buy Magazines!

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 67! October is 3/4 of the way over and fall is in full swing up here in the Pacific Northwest. While this means less time to shoot during the daylight hours, this does mean that it’s almost that time of year when getting out to shoot with night vision on is becoming much less of a hassle. However, as we talked about last week, it looks like there has been another bum rush on 5.56/.223 ammunition which has led to most of the more affordable training ammunition drying up. As of writing, the average price for any type of 5.56 or .223 ammunition seems to be sitting at about 20-25 cents more per round than just a week ago. Most of what is left on sites like Palmetto State Armory, Primary Arms, Natchez Shooters Supply, and other online retailers, is mostly heaver grain match ammunition or 62-grain green tip (M855). My go-to pistol ammunition for this year AAC 124gr 9mm, is no longer in stock in individual boxes but can be purchased as a package deal with a Plano Ammunition can for about $0.30 per round meaning 9mm pricing hasn’t been affected quite as much as 5.56 ammunition. I’ll post the few deals like that that I’ve found but for this week, I think we’ll mostly be able to find deals on other things besides ammunition – here’s hoping that changes soon! In any case, if you’re not buying your regular order of ammo, why not just buy more magazines!

Launching A Rifle Grenade With The 20″ Hellion

When Springfield Armory unveiled their new 18″ and 20″ Hellions, many of us noticed the 20″ version has a similar-looking barrel as the Croatian military-issued VHS-D2. It looks like it has a gas ring to launch a rifle grenade. So I took my review sample 20″ Hellion and tested it to launch practice rifle grenades. Here is that story.

Concealed Carry Corner: Polymer versus Metal Compact Handguns

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we discussed the difference between practical and tactical carry bags. If you happened to miss that article, click the link here to catch up on last week’s article. This week, I wanted to talk about the increase in full-metal construction handguns on the market over the last few years. While heavier carry guns do offer a few advantages, they are by no means perfect. Let’s take a closer look at some of these new models and differences when it comes to polymer versus metal compact handguns.
