Firearms Food for Thought: Is 10mm Underappreciated?

When you walk into any sizable gun store the options can be a bit overwhelming (or absolutely thrilling, depending on your viewpoint). Firearms in a number of calibers with countless features and options are displayed on the walls, within glass counters, and on the hips of employees. And when you try to engage said employees in conversation, whether with questions or simply to take a look at a specific gun, you’re frequently hit with opinions as varied as the guns on display. If you ask what the best handgun caliber is – “best” being used somewhat loosely – you’re going to get a different answer depending on a few factors. Are you male? Female? Tall? Short? Do you have that tough, capable look or do you appear a little stand-offish, maybe even timid? Sure, appearances can be deceiving, but a lot of assumptions are made based on them. So when the suggested handgun calibers start rolling out, they vary depending on different factors and, of course, opinions. But when those suggestions are made, how often is the 10mm among them? Is the 10mm underappreciated – and underused?

Firearms Food for Thought: Caliber versus Shot Placement

It’s a frequent argument, one prone to sparking tempers in person and on social media – pretty much any time it comes up. Is shot placement truly everything and if it is, does that mean it doesn’t really matter what caliber of handgun you conceal carry? Is carrying a pocket pistol chambered in .380 ACP or even .22LR justifiable if you’re confident in your ability to make the perfect shot when your life is on the line? Or should your EDC be something bigger, such as a .45 ACP or 10mm? With a larger-caliber handgun there’s a sizeable permanent wound cavity, which means maybe – just maybe – you’d have a bit more leeway when it comes to placement. Or does a bigger caliber mean you’d actually have a harder time making that shot thanks to recoil, and maybe even be less likely to carry it since it’s harder to conceal? There are endless questions and countless angles. This is one of those questions that draws a line in the sand, one those on both sides are unlikely to ever agree to crossing.

Limited Edition Ted Nugent 1911 from Republic Forge

We’re all familiar with the 1911 and many of us love them. We’re familiar with their long histories – designed by John Browning, in service since 1911, produced by the millions, traditionally chambered in .45 ACP – and many of us are quite familiar with their use (In fact, I know a certain person here at TFB whose proficiency with a 1911 is nothing less than impressive – name starts with “P” ends with “L”). They’re great guns and there are many good reasons they’ve been a staple in the gun industry for so long. Now Republic Forge is making a special 1911 – a Limited Edition Ted Nugent 1911.

Forgotten Weapons Calls the Bren Ten "The Most Tactical Pistol"

The Bren Ten can trace the roots of its design back to 1979. It was created by Michael Dixon and Thomas Dornaus of Dornaus and Dixon Enterprises, but there’s more to its story than that. In 1980 they decided to get advice from none other than Col. Jeff Cooper, whose advice proved invaluable. It’s chambered in 10mm, but in the early stages the men tried out wildcat rounds such as the .40 GA. In the end the original Bren Ten was only in production from 1983 to 1986; Dornaus and Dixon were forced to file bankruptcy in 1986, bringing an end to manufacturing. That isn’t the end of the Bren Ten story, though.

Liberty Ammunition Civil Defense 10mm Auto

Liberty Ammunition is introducing 10mm Auto into its Civil Defense Line of ammo. The lead-free ammo features approximately twice the velocity, three times the terminal effect, 30% more energy and less felt recoil. The ammo is nickel-plated, has solid copper projectiles and nickel-plated brass cases. The projectile is designed to fragment in soft tissue, resulting in a much greater transfer of kinetic energy to the target. Due to the proprietary design of the projectile and its solid copper construction, Liberty states that the round provides exceptional performance on hard targets such as drywall, car doors, auto glass and leather/denim without sacrificing any performance in soft tissue.

Liberty’s tests at their production facility showed the ammo achieved velocities greater than 2,400 FPS (nearly double that of standard 10mm ammo).
