POTD: Best of Defence Imagery 2021 – L7A2 GPMG
Photo Of The Day, or should we say of the year? As another year has passed, the Ministry Of Defense in the United Kingdom has chosen the “Best of Defence Imagery 2021“, and this image was one of the selected. It’s easy to see why, and you can see the original caption below for more background:
POTD: TracerX – Belt-Fed Fightlite Industries MCR
The perfect magazine doesn’t exist, does it? Or do we have the best solution just in front of us, as presented by FightLite Industries and their MCR Dual-Feed Upper? At $6,399.99 it’s one of the most expensive uppers I’ve ever encountered, but that didn’t stop a friend from buying one. It’s pretty cool to have a belt instead of a magazine, I can tell you!
POTD: New Sako M23 DMR with Steiner M7Xi 2.9-20×50
TFB’s Photo Of The Day has become an impressive gallery, with an ever-growing number of images of firearms in all sorts of environments. Today we’re going to add one more, on the subject of a new era of semi-automatic Designated Marksman Rifles (DMR) that is seeing the light of day. The photo shows the Sako M23 DMR for the Finnish Defence Force. It’s a semi-auto sniper rifle, AR-style and chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. It has a short-stroke gas piston system.
POTD: Alaska National Guard Aviators
Photo Of The Day – established in 2014 this is our way to show various photos with firearms on a daily basis. There’s always a story to the pictures and hopefully, you’ll learn something new. Below (and above) you have Spc. Michael Moulton, a native of Juneau, Alaska, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 6th Brigade Engineer Battalion (Airborne), 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Alaska, pulling security while training with aviators from the Alaska Army National Guard at Neibhur Drop Zone.
POTD: Exercise Arctic Specialist
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we have some photos of Norwegian Navy EODs, US Navy EODs Mobile Unit 8, and Danish Navy EODs training together with the Norwegian Army and Air Force during the Exercise Arctic Specialist. Above you can see some Heckler & Koch HK416s working together from an inflatable boat. Below there’s a heavy Machine Gun.
POTD: Falkland Islands Defence Force Shooting Historic Weapons
Photo Of The Day: The Falkland Islands Defence Force is the Volunteer Military Unit first established in 1892. The Force is fully funded by the Falkland Islands Government and works closely with British Forces to provide defence and security to the Falkland Islands.
POTD: Savotta Camouflage
Photo Of The Day: If you want to hide a horse in the winter, Savotta from Finland may have a solution for you. For the Finnish independence day, they posted these images, which hopefully will put a smile on your face. Savotta have been manufacturing outdoors, hunting and tactical equipment since 1955. Can you identify the firearms in these pictures?
POTD: Green Berets in the Japanese Jungle
Rice & Shine! Welcome to TFB’s Photo Of The Day and Japanese jungle! Above we see a U.S. Air Force technician from the 18th Component Maintenance Squadron, guarding his fire team’s retreat during a break contact combat exercise. This was part of a multi-day training event in 2019, at the Jungle Warfare Training Center, Camp Gonsalves, Japan.
POTD: B&T – Any Colour You Like
Photo Of The Day: “Any Colour You Like” is one of the tracks on the English band Pink Floyd’s album from 1973, “The Dark Side of the Moon”. It’s also a perfect description for this set of images taken by Jeremy Tremp from the Offensive Marketing Group.
POTD: Concamoed Soldiers with HK433 and HK G27P
Sometimes a single photo is enough for our Photo Of The Day. Today is such a day. Concamo produces some really effective camouflage patterns and their images follow the same high standards. Most people think there’s just a dog in the picture above. But we have the brand new Heckler & Koch HK433 and a short-barreled Heckler & Koch HK417, most likely a G27P. Note that the HK417 has some really interesting optics, probably a thermal clip-on.
POTD: Samopal USA – Sturmgewehr and vz. 58
Photo Of The Day: My own vz. 58 rifle in 7.62×39 mm is my “back to basics” rifle, and I intend to keep it in its original configuration forever. Most of the time it’s pretty hard to hit anything beyond 80-100 yards, but if you do things right, it’s pretty rewarding and you can reach out further away with the iron sights. Thanks to friends, I’ve handled a Sturmgewehr, but I’m pretty far from ever owning one. Here we can see two classic icons together, the Sturmgewehr and the vz. 58. The pictures are from Samopal USA, a company that provides Sa vz. 58 and Sa vz. 61 gunsmithing services.
POTD: Storm Barra – Welsh Guards with Heckler & Koch SA80 A3
Photo Of The Day: Last year this blog pumped out one POTD per day, with a few exceptions for public holidays. We intend to continue doing so in 2022, and as you most likely discovered, we already got started. Today we have pictures of Welsh Guards. For more information about the Welsh Guards and their upgraded firearms please check this story Welsh Guards Armoury Upgrade – Heckler & Koch SA80 A3. There are also excellent reference pictures of the SA80 A2 / L85A2 with ELCAN SpecterOS here.
POTD: Derya Arms – Drum Magazines
Photo Of The Day: The Derya MK-12 semi-automatic shotgun from Turkey has become increasingly popular in sports and target shooting. They now just released a new drum magazine which is worth sharing some pictures of. While forbidden in some competitions like IPSC Shotgun (max 10+1 rounds and no drum magazines), they can provide a lot of fun at the range anyways.
POTD: Browning BAR Match & InfiRay Zoom ZH38 Thermal Imaging Monocular
Our Photo Of The Day brings us to the subject of hunting and thermal imaging. Some say it takes the hunt out of hunting, but it can be a great help and also make dull moments much more interesting. Here you can see the Browning BAR Match in .308 Win and the brand new InfiRay Zoom ZH38 thermal imaging monocular which I brought to a recent hunt. The camera managed to catch the disappearing sunlight just over the InfiRay icon.
POTD: Special Forces Exercise Near Novosibirsk
Each day a different image from the world of firearms. We call this POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, and it is our daily article series where we go to great lengths trying to find the most interesting pictures for you out there. Above you have a VSS Vintorez used by Special Forces of the Central Military District, at the Ironiya complex during an exercise near Novosibirsk (Russia).
POTD: Down Range Photography
Photo Of The Day: There’s a lot of talent (and firearms) behind the wonderful stream of images produced by Down Range Photography. Above you can see a New Year’s shot of a few of his blasters, certainly a bit out of the ordinary from what you’ll find in a gun shop. The State of Arizona at its best?
POTD: Victrix Armaments "Throne" – Extreme Long Range Rifle
Photo Of The Day is TFB’s place where you can unwind and just enjoy interesting pictures for a while. While the rest of this blog is stacked with new releases, information and reviews, you can just enjoy the tranquility and beautiful pictures here. We’ve been doing it since 2014 and keep on going, every day of the year. Today we have an Extreme Long Range Rifle from Victrix Armaments in Italy, with a Steiner riflescope sitting firmly in a ROME mount.
POTD: Italian Special Forces in Exercise Goldfinger 2021
Photo Of The Day: If you thought the word “Italian” in the title was going to save you from seeing firearms Made in Germany, you were wrong. You’re probably as surprised as me that there are no Beretta ARXs. Here we have the Exercise Goldfinger 2021 where Special Forces, Air Forces and Amphibious Forces of the Navy train in the field of maritime counter-terrorism.
POTD: Norwegian Snipers' Targets Beyond 2200 Yards – Barrett MRAD
Photo Of The Day and what a nice place to be! The Norwegian Armed Forces ordered the Barrett MRAD already in 2013, so you can call them early adopters for sure. For the United States Army Precision Sniper Rifle contracts, Barrett have now made over a thousand MRAD Mk22s. Here we can see Norwegian snipers as they engage targets beyond 2000 meters, while they have instructors observing them. The pictures are from July 2018 during the ISTC Desert Sniper Course and the location was Chinchilla Training Area in Spain. I bet mirage from the heat was an issue.
POTD: French Desert Battle Group in Operation Monclar
Photo Of The Day: TFB’s daily articles with photos like these are as close as most people ever get to Special Operations. We get a hint about what kind of uniforms, gear and equipment is being used, as well as how it’s mounted. Here we have French soldiers in Operation Monclar in Mali with various firearms from Heckler & Koch. Above you can just see the spotter behind the spotting scope and the designated marksman behind what I think is a Heckler & Koch HK417.
POTD: US and Swedish Marine Snipers
Archipelago Endeavor is an annual, bilateral integrated field-training exercise, conducted to promote interoperability, strengthen partnerships, and enhance strategic and tactical cooperation between U.S. and Swedish Marines. This is TFB’s Photo Of The Day, and we take a closer look at the US and Swedish Marine snipers working together and their firearms. The Swedish Ak5 is clearly visible (FN FNC). Can you identify the sniper rifles?
POTD: Sky Soldiers in V-22 Ospreys
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we’re looking at transportation into the Hohenfels Training Area, Germany for the Exercise Saber Junction 2020, by means of V-22 Ospreys flown by the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit. They also used CH-47 Chinooks and UH-60 Black Hawks flown by 12th Combat Aviation Brigade.
POTD: Ruger American Predator with Magpul and EOTech
Each day a different image from the world of firearms. TFB calls this POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, and it is our daily article series where we go to great lengths trying to find the most interesting pictures for you out there. It’s been a while, but it’s time for some more pictures from Mr. Tremp. Today we have the Ruger American Predator chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, an excellent caliber for a lot of things. The Ruger has the Magpul Hunter Stock and a Magpul Bipod. In terms of optics, we have an EOTech Vudu 5-25×50 mounted with an American Defense Mfg scope mount.
POTD: The CZ600 Trail
Every now and then a firearm pops up that’s a little bit different. The new CZ600 Trail from CZ firearms is such one and it certainly deserves to be the subject of today’s Photo Of The Day. For some reason, it reminds me of the U.S. Survival AR-7. Even though more or less everything is different, they seem quite good to have once you leave civilization. Available in either .223 Rem or 7,62×39, the CZ600 Trail is a bit more potent than a rimfire.
POTD: Christmas Tree Protection Duty With CZ SP-01
You’ve heard of Night Stand Duty guns, but what about Christmas Tree Protection Duty guns? Of course, I was just being facetious in regards to this sweet, festive photo I found from Instagrammer, @aviatorsarmory, but I did a search just for kicks and found that Christmas tree theft is actually a thing. Celebrating the birth of Christ by violating one of the Ten Commandments is an interesting concept.
POTD: Heckler & Koch and Low-flying F-35A Fighter Jet
Photo Of The Day: In 2008 the Norwegian government selected the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II (Joint Strike Fighter) as a replacement for their fleet of F-16s. Almost ten years after, in 2017, the first aircraft arrived at the Ørland Air Base and this is still the main base. In 2020 The Royal Norwegian Air Force conducted their first international deployment with the F-35 during NATO Air Policing missions in Iceland. Norway has seven F35s operational with a total of 52 planned.
POTD: PGM Hecate II .50 BMG in .22LR
POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, is TFB’s recurring articles where we go to great lengths trying to find the best pictures and stories out there. Today we’re pretty sure you’re going to learn something you had no idea about. The French Army uses a rifle called the FR-12.7 (12.7mm calibre bolt-action rifle). It is made by PGM Précision, and you may know it better under the name PGM Hécate II. We all know that the .50 BMG round is pretty violent and not the most fun thing to shoot for a long day. PGM has now made a rimfire version in .22LR to provide training for future snipers.
