FN America Announces $18 Million Expansion Project at Columbia, South Carolina Production Facility

SIG SAUER Auctioning Numbers-Matching M17 and M18 for Charity

SIG SAUER‘s M17 and M18 pistols have served as America’s official service sidearms for six years, having been officially adopted as the winner of the US Army’s XM17 Modular Handgun System competition in 2017. The respective full-size and shorter carry-length models replaced the Beretta M9, which had been in service since 1985 after replacing the venerable 1911. Military units have been gradually phasing in the M17 and M18 over the last few years, with the company celebrating their 100,000th handgun delivery to the DoD in 2019. Now a special matched pair of these handguns are being auctioned for charity, benefiting the military-supporting Sterling Promise Foundation. This organization honors Staff Sergeant Scott Sterling, who succumbed to cancer in April 2021 after an illustrious US Army Special Operations career. Are Gun Sales Declining?

A January 2023 report from CNBC claims that gun companies are experiencing a decline in demand for firearms. According to the report, in 2022, gun sales dropped by 11% compared to the previous year. Publicly-traded gun companies like Smith & Wesson and Sturm, Ruger & Company, have reported a decline in sales and revenue for several quarters in a row. For example, Smith & Wesson’s net sales for the first quarter of 2023 were $131.6 million, down from $174 million in the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, Sturm, Ruger & Company’s net sales for the same period fell by 16.4% to $110.8 million.

FN America Adds New Manufacturing Facility in South Carolina

FN America, the US subsidiary of Belgium’s FN Herstal, has been in operation for more than four decades. Its current guise is the result of a merger of the two separate prior iterations, FN Manufacturing and FNH USA. Beyond the Belgian and American operations, the company maintains a UK branch as well. Today, FN America is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, and their manufacturing facility near Columbia, South Carolina primarily handles military arms, such as the M249 SAW and M240 machine guns. Now FN America has announced that they are expanding to a second domestic manufacturing operation. This new plant will be located in Liberty, SC, which is about two hours’ drive northwest of Columbia.
