This episode is an introduction to the series, featuring Clint Smith‘s discussion as to why the AR-15 and similar rifles and carbines are preferable for self-defense.

In an effort to better respond to any acts of terrorism, the Australian Federal Police have selected Daniel Defense’s Mk18 short barreled rifles (SBR’s) for use in protecting Australian airports.  The Federal Police released the information as a press release to inform the public of why they may see officers patrolling with upgraded hardware.  They explained that there is not currently any elevated threat level, but that they are now better prepared in the event that an armed response is necessary in the form of Protection Operation Response Teams (PORT).

In the last three or four months, I have been making an effort to go out and shoot with strangers in public ranges either outside or the various indoor ranges in Michigan. It’s fairly easy to become comfortable shooting on private land with the same group of people. In an effort to break this trend, I’ve started shooting at random indoor ranges lately and talking to people about random firearms. I was rather surprised when I took a couple AR pistol caliber carbines and people didn’t understand the difference between Colt AR magazines and Glock factory magazines. I got a ton of questions about what’s best and what one they should buy if they only have a budget to purchase one. Let’s dive into the differences between Glock mags and Colt mags.

The Kali Key is one of those products that makes me sad it even exists. Having a product that turns your semi-auto AR into a bolt action with a few simple modifications. Now at first, I was somewhat puzzled why anyone would want to switch their AR to a bolt action and pretty much wrote it off. A few months after initially hearing about the Kali Key, a friend of mine had one and ask if I wanted to use it for a few months to see how it worked. I gladly accepted the offer and let’s dive into what the Kai Key is all about.

In June of 2017, TFB reported that an innovation in the AR world was in development. Evolution Weapon Systems had begun working on a prototype bufferless bolt carrier group system for the AR-15 platform, and Instagrammer “thegatman” had posted a few teaser videos. These clips featured an AR capable of firing with its Law Tactical folding stock adapter locked in the folded position. The internal mechanics of how Evolution Weapon Systems had achieved this feat, however, were not revealed at that time. Fortunately, now that the bufferless BCGs are available for pre-order from the Evolution Weapon Systems website, we can now see what’s going on inside.

During one of their latest live streams, Bill Geissele, the founder of Geissele Automatics, announced the launch of a new product line called Special Agent. As its name implies, the parts and accessories included in this line are exactly the ones used by the FBI. Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF-USA) has announced the release of a new series of AR-15 pattern weapons called Minuteman. In POF-USA’s own words, the features seen in Minuteman rifles and pistols are “Everything a respectable rifle needs, and nothing it doesn’t“.

Until I started writing this article I had never really thought about the fact that I actually own no less than three rifles from Ruger. All bought at MSRP, or above, in fact. Two Ruger semi-autos, one in 223 Rem and one in 9×19 mm. And one bolt-action in 308 Win that all sit in my safe, and now serve as a reminder that I should get out and shoot more than I sit in front of the keyboard.

When talking about weapon lights, probably the most asked question about lights would be the best rifle light for a defensive AR carbine. There’s no shortage of quality options of WML (weapon mounted lights) on the market but they all have pros and cons whether its size, weight, or brightness. Now don’t get me wrong, I know there won’t ever be a single perfect light for every situation but there are a few different models out there that do a great job considering the size and lumen count.

Lighter, Sleeker, Stronger – that’s how Dead Foot Arms describes the new second generation of their MCS (Modified Cycle System) side folding AR-15 stock adapter. The company has been developing and testing the Gen 2 MCS for about six months and now it is finally released.

Introduced at SHOT Show 2019, the Odin Works CQ-S (Close Quarter Stock) is now available for purchase. This AR-15 stock system has a micro buffer and flat wire spring which allow having a much shorter buffer tube that extends behind the lower receiver by only five inches. The short buffer tube, in its turn, makes for a really compact package when the adjustable MP-5 style stock is fully collapsed.

I can’t really explain why I have wanted to try an AR-10 pistol out but it’s been a long time coming. It’s something about having such a hard-hitting round in a compact package. Let’s be honest, I know some of you are going to say I’m insane for wanting a short 308 AR pistol. I get it, you’d have to be a drunk mad man to own something so concussive in such a small package. All of those are probably valid but don’t jump to conclusions just yet. For the longest time, I kept going back and forth between building an AR-10 pistol and buying one ready to go out of the gate. After looking around for a few months, I came across the Type-A’s 10.5 308 AR pistol. I gave them a call and we figured out a gun that would work for my needs.

The new ambidextrous charging handle has two versions – for AR-15 and AR-10 pattern weapons. This accessory is packed with all the features modern shooters demand from an AR charging handle.

Occasionally I’ll sit down in a restaurant with family or good buddies and strike up gun related conversations. A few years ago my dad jokingly said he would love to give me a million dollars to buy whatever gun parts I wanted, but the catch would be I only had an hour to spend it. With the recent sneak peek of the new Cobalt Kinetics line of 1911-Style Pistols, there was also some other less positive news attached to the same release.

Wilson Combat has added three new big bore caliber offerings for their line of AR-15 pattern rifles. The new chamberings include the .350 Legend, .375 SOCOM and .450 Bushmaster. These cartridges are added to two other big bore calibers currently offered by the company – .458 SOCOM and .458 HAM’R. Let’s see what options are available for each of the new calibers.

Franklin Armory (Nevada) just introduced a new firearm which will be of interest especially for enthusiasts in the State of California (and similar ban states). “Title 1” is the name of the firearm which is said to have all features and no magazine lock.

In a market absolutely saturated with AR-15 style rifles, it’s hard to stand out. Seemingly everything has been done to make the platform more reliable, more accurate and more ergonomic. Even with all the top tier options out there, some available at very reasonable prices, people still choose to go with PSA and Anderson Rifles. With a growing number of companies making different types of fixed iron sights, I’ve been getting a ton of questions on what’s best. Some say red dot only is best while others say having fixed or back up irons to co-witness with are great too. Both styles have their advantages depending on what your needs are out of your gun. Let’s jump into what the difference is between the two systems and why they both have advantages.

There are endless debates on what flashlight is best for a rifle but not many people talk about the benefits of offset light mounts vs standard factory mounts. I didn’t think much of offset light mounts until I started using a Haley Strategic SBR Thorntail mount on my 10.5 AR Pistol.
