The Rimfire Report: Special Edition – The Pinfire Report

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This week’s special edition is going to depart from our normal subject and instead focus on another cartridge design that is only a couple of decades older – pinfire. Similar to rimfire cartridges, pinfire cartridges were invented in the earlier half of the 19th century as firearms technology was rapidly progressing. The pinfire cartridge design was one of the trailblazers of what would eventually become modern cartridges for the time and is also noteworthy for being one of the first metallic cartridge designs of the 19th century. Today in this special edition of The Rimfire Report, we’ll dive into the history, design, and firearms that existed within the pinfire world and how they eventually became obsolete after a short-lived era of widespread adoption.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 42: Guns, the Universe, and Everything

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 42! Any science fiction nerd out there probably has their mind permanently tainted by that number and its association as the answer to “Life the Universe and Everything” at least according to the 1978 Douglas Adams novel Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I’m not insulated from those thoughts which leads me to remember the enjoyable 2005 film adaptation and its inclusion of the “Point of View Gun” (this was not present in the novels). This other golden gun was in the shape of a rifle and its blast when directed at its victims could make them see things from the shooter’s point of view. Where am I going with this? Seeing things from someone else’s point of view is a handy social skill to have and one that I think is becoming increasingly rare even within the firearms industry. I don’t want to get too preachy, but maybe next time instead of getting into an internet argument with a stranger, you can just share some nice sales on guns and ammo with one another?

Concealed Carry Corner: Great Concealed Carry Shooting Drills

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about overcoming flight or flight impulses like tunnel vision and auditory exclusion. If you missed that article, be sure to check it out by clicking on the link here. This week, I wanted to talk about something relatively important when it comes to carrying concealed. We oftentimes can get so much out of dry firing but working on those skills at home only do so much. It really takes getting out to the range to practice all the skills together to become proficient. Ammo prices are thankfully coming down so I figured I would add my absolute favorite drills at the moment when it comes to helping train concealed carriers. Let’s take a closer look at some great concealed carry shooting drills.

[EnforceTac 2023] The Heckler & Koch HK437 with A-TEC Suppressors

One of the highlights each year is Heckler & Koch‘s booth at EnforceTac. It’s easy to underestimate this two-day exhibition and its importance for defense and homeland security. About 8,000 people from about 70 countries come to the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg each year, which may look like a low figure but Enforce Tac is a trade fair for professionals from government agencies with security responsibilities and the armed forces only. Next year the exhibition will grow with one more exhibition hall, and one day extra, and we’re already looking forward to 2024. Heckler & Koch has its natural place here, and their booth is always crowded. In this article we will focus on the HK437 in 7″ and 9″ configurations. We wish we could take even better pictures than these, but you have to fight to even get a short glimpse of these things.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Mauser C78 Zig Zag

This week on Wheelgun Wednesday, we’ll be taking a look into German revolvers of the past with the Mauser C78 revolver.  The “1st model” C78s were solid frame guns, but shortly after their introduction, the vastly improved hinged frame “2nd models” came out.  The C78 “2nd model” was an 1878 German design by Gebrüder Mauser & Co, as Waffenfabrik Mauser didn’t exist until 1884.  The distinct features of the C78 series were the cam-track cylinder rotation system designed by Elisha Root coupled with a lever-release tip-up break-open frame.

If neither of those things catches your fancy, we’ll also be hearing from the guys at the Vortex Nation Podcast once again as they discuss the challenges that American Turkeys are facing in some specific regions across the United States and what could be done to perhaps reverse the recent trend. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content!

The Rimfire Report: The Henry Classic Lever Action .22 – Affordable Heirloom

Hello and welcome back to The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, ammunition types, and shooting sports! Last week we covered a little bit of long-range 22LR shooting news, talking about the maximum “reliable” range you can actually shoot 22LR out to. Personally, having participated in Rimfire PRS matches with a variety of rifles, 700-yards does seem a bit far for maintaining practical accuracy with such an anemic cartridge but like many of you probably saw in the video, you can still kind of get in the general vicinity of your target at those ranges but landing a shot even on a large 2×2′ steel plate is a dice roll, even with a very calculated shot. This week we’re jumping back into a review of a classic – the Henry Classic Lever Action 22LR Rifle.

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to do a quick one-year review of the Infante S6 Ultrasonic Cleaner that I previously reviewed over at our sister site AllOutdoor.com. Though not much of my opinions or feeling have changed about this device and the practice of using it, I have come to some conclusions I thought I would weave in after a little over a year of use. That being said let’s dive right into this Infante S6 Ultrasonic Cleaner 1-Year Review!

SILENCER SATURDAY #269: First Shots – The SIG MCX-SPEAR And SLH SLX Suppressors

Good morning everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the best value for performance suppressors on the market. Last week we reviewed the attributes of what I think makes the SIG MCX the best suppressor platform currently available – especially when we are talking about rifles chambered in 300BLK. This week we step it up a notch with the brand new SIG MCX-SPEAR short barrel rifle chambered in 7.62×51 paired with the SIG SLH762-QD (full size) and SIG SLX762C-QD (compact) suppressors. As a normally practical, tool-focused shooter, why am I drawn to a 13″ 7.62 NATO rifle? Let me explain.

Friday Night Lights: Does Thermal Camo Work?

Well, this week we take a look at a pet project my friends and I started after watching Garand Thumb’s video. The question was raised “Does thermal camo work?” Well, last fall we put it to the test.

Let’s take a closer look.

Concealed Carry Corner: Overcoming Fight Or Flight

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about carrying and training with similar firearms. If you happen to miss that article, be sure to click the link here to check it out. This week, I wanted to take a deeper dive into the natural effects of the body’s emergency response to danger. The emergency response of fight or flight was incredible when looking at our ancestors. People running from danger or fighting for their life needed these extra-conditioned responses but in modern times do they do more harm than good? Let’s take a closer look at overcoming fight or flight.

Wheelgun Wednesday: The Korth Callahan Revolver

In today’s Wheelgun Wednesday we are taking a quick look at a new Korth revolver dubbed Callahan that was recently announced by Nighthawk Custom. As you might have guessed, it’s named after Clint Eastwood’s character inspector Harold Francis Callahan from the Dirty Harry series of movies. Being a Dirty Harry-themed wheelgun, the Korth Callahan is of course chambered in the Dirty Harry cartridge, the .44 Magnum. Well, inspector Callahan carried a Smith & Wesson Model 29, but this German revolver has a similar big magnum wheelgun vibe and will blow your head clean off just like the Smith and Wesson.

TFB Podcast Roundup 76: An AK-50 Update, and Lever Guns

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 76. Quite a long time ago, I’m not sure how long ago exactly YouTube personality Brandon Hererra, who got his start in YouTube building out AK rifles, started the infamous AK-50 project. Since then the project has seen many delays as his channel has grown to leave his viewers and those interested in a 50BMG AK rifle with very few updates on his progress so far. Today we’ll be featuring a great podcast from the boys at Classic Firearms featuring Brandon and a much-needed update on the AK-50 development process. In addition to that, we’ve brought back some of your favorite podcasts with their latest episodes including our very own TFB podcast this week featuring Clark Aposhian who is very active in the 2A community on the legal side of things. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content in TFB Podcast Roundup 76.

The Rimfire Report: Is 700 Yards a Bridge Too Far for 22LR?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report. This ongoing series of rimfire-focused articles is about the rimfire firearm world and its many firearms, trends, ammunition types, and of course history. Last week fellow TFB writer and gunsmith savant Sam S. took a deep dive into the antiquated 30 Rimfire cartridge. Like many of its other rimfire cousins, 30 Rimfire just didn’t survive the wide acceptance of centerfire cartridges which proved to be superior in virtually every way. This week we’re going to be covering something that caught my attention quite recently. Around the start of the new year the YouTube channel Garand Thumb started a discussion with a guy in the comments of one of his recent videos saying he could consistently hit a soda can at 700 yards with a 22LR. Obviously, a lot of online drama has been drummed up about this and I’m not particularly interested in that portion of it, but rather the actual practicality of the claim. So today we’ll discuss whether or not I think this is possible based on what I know and have experienced with 22LR.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturer’s of the new YHM Turbo T3 rifle suppressor. TFB Visits Gunpoint Helsinki – Shooting the Finnish KAR-21 Multi-Caliber Rifle

Concealed Carry Corner: Carrying and Training With Similar Firearms

Welcome to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week we talked about some of the dangerous distractions we have to face on a daily basis when it comes to our phones. If you missed last week’s article and want to check it out, be sure to click the link here. When it comes to carrying and training, we can often get distracted by other styles of firearms as well as different action types if we decide to buy something new. It happens all the time, but what most don’t think about is the amount of proficiency lost due to switching around from one gun to another. I certainly know some of you are like me where you enjoy buying various action types and moving around from one system to another. This poses a few problems so let’s take a closer look at carrying and training with similar firearms.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Taurus 856 TORO Revolver Preview

This week on TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, we’ll take a sneak peek at the brand-new Taurus 856 TORO revolver, which is an optics-ready revolver, driven with concealed carry and self-defense in mind. The aptly named “T.O.R.O.” in this case stands for Taurus Optics Ready Option, which was initially launched in 2021 with Taurus’ G3 semi-auto pistol. However, the TORO line has just been expanded to two of their small framed revolvers, the 856 and 605. Taurus was kind enough to lend me a copy of the model 856 TORO, which we’ll take a quick preview of today, with a full review coming in the near future.

TFB Podcast Roundup 75: Braces and Bump Stocks

While I could wax eloquent about the entire situation and its lack of merit or consistency, I think it’s best if I leave that up to this week’s featured podcasts. This week we’ll be hearing a bit about the recent overturning of the ATF’s bump stock ban, more about the ATF pistol brace rule situation, as well as a handful of other recent podcasts from some of my favorite fellow gun podcasters. As always, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week’s roundup of gun podcast content!

TFB Weekly Web Deals 39: Two is One and One is None

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 39. Ahh yes, the power of redundancy. While there is something to be said for the equally valid “buy once cry once” phrase, I often find that “two is one and one is none” is far more applicable when it comes to firearms and equipment. Good optics break, great weapon lights fail, firearms components break, and as we are all too familiar with, batteries run out sometimes at the most inopportune times. For TFB Weekly Web Deals 39, I’ve found some deals on firearms components and accessories you might want to keep a spare of so you’re not missing out on precious range time while your stuff is out of commission or being put under warranty service.
