The Rimfire Report: Is Federal Automatch Secretly the Best Bulk Ammo?

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, shooting sports, histories, and ammunition! Last week on Rimfire Report we talked about accurizing your stock Ruger 10/22 rifle. There are a lot of different ways to approach accurizing such a classic design. With probably nearly as much aftermarket support as the AR-15 platform, the 10/22 is one that will probably stick around for a very long time and probably see even more small innovations designed around it than we see out there today. This week I want to talk about volume – specifically the amount you shoot in a day. Even though rimfire is less expensive than shooting centerfire guns, when you’re practicing for an event and throwing hundreds of rounds downrange, those pennies still add up. Today we’ll be talking about what I think might be one of the better types of ammunition (at least for some guns) within the rimfire firearm world – Federal Automatch 40-grain 22LR bulk ammunition.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 37: 5 Items That Are Always in My Range Bag

Welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 37. With the start of the new year, I had a little bit of precious downtime to take care of some administrative tasks with my gun gear. This meant cleaning out my range bag. The range bag I personally use the most is a 5.11’s Range Ready Bag 43L. This bag has been with me for a long time and has served me well, has a ton of space for a lot of guns, ammunition, and of course all the other random tools and gear that are almost always with me. If you’re looking for a fresh start to your range trips, you might want to consider picking one of these up – it will probably last you a lifetime. Today for TFB Weekly Web deals 37 we’re going to take a look at 5 items that are always in my range bag that go beyond the basics (eye pro, ear pro, IFAK, etc).

I hope everyone had a great holiday season and new year! In this article, I decided to run down some goals I have for the year as well as some stuff that Santa was not able to check off my wishlist. It has been pretty rough up here in Minnesota as far as the weather goes so the workshop has not really been an option. Inside, warm and away from the snow and wind I thought I would jot down some general goals and things on my wishlist for 2023. While we run through it make sure to think to yourselves what you would like to see out of TFB Armorer’s Bench for this year. Any types of articles you would like to see more of? Any new stuff to try out? That being said, let’s dive right into my 2023 Armorer’s Bench Wishlist/Goals!

Gun Shops and Gun Laws of Pakistan. Part One: What Happened to "Khyber Pass" Industry?

While most people wouldn’t know anything about the firearms of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, or the Philippines, Pakistan’s weapon manufacturing is world-famous, but for all the wrong reasons. The term “Khyber Pass” is often used in the US to describe a low-quality AK made from mismatched parts or to make fun of a poorly made handgun or a rifle.

Precision Rifle Series: Gas Gun vs Bolt Action – Which is better?

In 2023 I’m going to give Gas Gun Precision Rifle Series a go in a few competitions, to see what a DMR-style rifle and myself can accomplish together. All the experts have always told me that gas guns aren’t accurate enough. Bolt actions are always going to be more accurate, period. Now, I’m not saying they are wrong, but I like to try things out myself. Preferably with help from friends. Our results can be found in this article, which is not intended to be scientific. Take it for what it is, a fun day at the range with some interesting discoveries. Can a gas gun beat a bolt-action in terms of precision, or is the author on very thin ice here? Let’s see!

Wheelgun Wednesday: A Glimpse At Revolvers Used In Crimes

Welcome to TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where we discuss every aspect of revolvers. In this edition, we’ll take a look at a few examples of revolvers used in crimes in recent history. A couple years ago, I posited that revolvers were still viable for the simple fact that criminals still choose to use them from time to time, however, today I thought we would simply take a look at a few recent examples of revolvers used in crimes since that last article.

Gun Shops and Gun Laws of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

In the last few years, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been going through a drastic transformation. As a result, Saudi Arabia is slowly becoming more attractive for expats and businessmen from all around the world.

Concealed Carry Corner: The Dangers of Carrying Concealed

Welcome back to this week’s edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week we talked about the importance of ammo versus buying accessories. If you happened to miss that, be sure to click the link to check it out here. This week is a rather interesting topic I’ve somewhat touched on but have not dove into like we will today. I recently received an email on my social media about someone who was recently charged in their state for displaying a firearm in a road rage situation. He sent me a very long message about how unfair the situation was but he made some fairly large mistakes. I think this is a fantastic situation to look closer at some of the dangers of carrying concealed.

Inside the TacGas Armory

Located in Salt Lake City, Utah is the production empire known as TacGas.  Founded in 2016 by Jim Staley, they’ve quickly become the go-to production company for both video game studios and defense contractors.  In 2019 Call of Duty Modern Warfare and its counterpart Warzone took the world by storm. Since then TacGas has been Call of Duty’s go-to production company that’s helping bring more realism into the massive franchise.  I had a chance to tour the TacGas facility and sit down with Jim Staley to ask him more about how this process works.  Here’s what I learned.

Concealed Carry Corner: Ammo Versus Accessories

Welcome back to another edition of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week, we talked about some of the tips I wish I would have known sooner. To check out my article from last week be sure to check out the link here. When it comes to carrying concealed, there’s an interesting trend coming out where people criticize companies for not offering the most modern options on their new handguns. A new carry gun was released and I put it up on my social media pages to get everyone’s take on it. People were immediately upset about the lack of an optics cut or bottom accessory rail. It started getting me thinking about what’s important when it comes to concealed carry. Let’s take a closer look at what’s more important ammo versus accessories.

Gun Shops and Gun Laws of Iraq: Part Two (Iraqi Kurdistan)

In Part One of this article, I shared my experiences after visiting gun stores in Baghdad, and it is not what most people expect to see in Iraq. Gun stores are small and cramped, with a relatively limited choice of firearms and really high prices. Thankfully, things in Iraqi Kurdistan are way different.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Zenk RZMK-357 Bullpup Revolver

Welcome back to Wheelgun Wednesday, a weekly articles series on The Firearm Blog where we discuss everything revolver: from historical to modern wheelguns, from prototype and experimental revolvers to custom-made and mass-produced ones, from conventional designs to the most unusual ones including bullpups. Yes, bullpups! For the lack of a better term, I’ll call the wheelgun we are taking a look at today a bullpup revolver. Designed by a company called Zenk LLC, the RZMK-357 revolver has a cylinder located behind the trigger which I guess makes it a bullpup. Interesting, isn’t it? Let’s take a closer look.

Gun Shops and Gun Laws of Iraq: Part One (Baghdad)

More than once, when I argued about gun control with different people, I heard the same argument: “If you want to have your precious “assault weapons” – go live in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Somalia, they have no gun laws, you’ll be happy there owning your silly weapons of war”. However, after working in those places for a while, I realized that all of the above-mentioned countries have extremely restrictive gun laws. And Iraq is perhaps the best example of that.

The Rimfire Report: Why Your 10/22 Rifle is Inaccurate

Hello everyone and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various firearms, shooting sports, ammunition types, and history! Last week on The Rimfire Report we talked about the historical significance of what was collectively known as gallery guns – basically versions of rifles and pistols that could somewhat safely be fired indoors for recreational purposes. In a lot of ways this sport lives on today in the form of air rifles in the garage or back yard at home, or sometimes even at carnivals in the form of full-auto air guns with a chance to win prizes. No matter how you approach plinking, it’s still fun and I suppose even the type of firearm (or air rifle) that you use is still irrelevant, sometimes people just want to have fun while shooting. On the flip side of things, some people are always looking for that extra bit of accuracy they can squeeze out of their rifles and pistols. Ruger 10/22 rifles aren’t exactly known for being “accurate” rifles. In fact, precision shooters or those with exceedingly high standards might go as far as to call them inaccurate.  That’s why today we’re going to go over a couple of basic reasons why your factory 10/22 22LR rifle or Charger Pistol may not be producing the groups you expected, and how you might go about improving that accuracy without spending a couple thousand dollars on a precision rifle.
