Wheelgun Wednesday: The Best Rimfire Revolvers on the Market

A good rimfire revolver can be an excellent and cost-effective way to practice the fundamentals.  If you’re unfortunate enough to reside somewhere where silencers aren’t allowed, they can be a great option for lightweight and compact small game harvesting tools as well. Revolver cartridges certainly aren’t immune to the market forces that affect almost all ammunition prices, and time spent on the range with a .22LR wheelgun can be just as instructive in some ways as an afternoon launching .357 downrange.  Today on Wheelgun Wednesday, we will be taking a look at a few of the best rimfire revolvers currently on the market, at least in this author’s opinion.

5 Items I've Used and I Trust are on Sale for Black Friday

5.11 has an extensive catalog that can be intimidating. Many items come and go – some are absolutely fantastic and some aren’t missed – but there are five specific staples that I have used for years which I recommend without reservation. Even several TFB writers and editors have given in to my repeated endorsements of the five below, and are now themselves converts. 5.11 is having their annual Black Friday sale, which means you’ll be getting up to 40% off of select items today. Maybe some of these will be on the list. Whether you’re picking up something for a spouse, your cameraman, something from your favorite tactical OnlyFans operator’s wish list, or for yourself (you definitely deserve it by the way…unless you are a TFB Disqus commenter), here’s the gear that has made me a believer after extensive use.

TFB Podcast Roundup 68: AI Gun Detection & Home Defense Guns

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 68! We’re now in the home stretch for Thanksgiving 2022 – my favorite time of the year – and I’ve personally got a lot of travel lined up so that means I’ll be dipping back into my deep pocket of favorite firearms podcasts for all of my flights, drives, and layovers. Late last week I came across a classic gun YouTuber (Sootch00) who happened to find his way onto the Vickers Tactical Podcast with a crossover being done by my good buddy Clint Morgan from Classic Firearms. We’ll also be hearing from the great folks at the Vortex Nation podcast who have brought on Garand Thumb (Mike) to talk about his experience with the XM-157 Next Generation Squad Weapon, as well as some of his personal history and how he met his camera guy Micah. I’ve also gathered a handful of more topical podcasts covering concealed carry methods, types of firearms recommended by some for home defense duty, and an up-and-coming AI Technology that can identify guns being carried on people, and whether or not this is a good or a bad thing as a whole. Buckle up, strap in, sit back and relax as you slide into Thanksgiving 2022 with some good ole’ gun podcast listening.

The Rimfire Report: Overdue SIG P322 Maintenance

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, ammunition types, shooting sports, and history! Last week we looked back at the Stevens Pocket Rifle (also known as the Bicycle Rifle). Although this gun might have been relatively obscure for modern firearms enthusiasts who don’t collect, it seems like the idea of the pocket rifle is one that is well received today and would probably even make for a great addition to the current rimfire firearms market was someone to take up the mantle. Some of you even reached out to me via Instagram and compared it to the Chiappa Little Badger which is a small single-shot .22LR or .22WMR rifle that basically folds in half to give the collapsed package an overall length of 17″. Many of you thought that if Chiappa simply slightly redesigned the firearm to accept a detachable brace and a slightly shorter barrel, this would be as close as we could get to the Pocket Rifle today. This week we’re dipping back into the recently released SIG Sauer P322 22LR pistol. My personal P322 is creeping pretty close to 15,000 rounds. While the gun is still running flawlessly, I think I kind of proved the point when I hit 10,000 rounds without cleaning and the gun just kept chugging along. Today we’ll be taking a look at how to field strip the P322, what the manual recommends for cleaning it, and also go a bit beyond what the manual calls for and finally take a look at some of the guts of the P322. Who’s ready for some long overdue SIG P322 maintenance?

TFB Armorer's Bench: Things in My Portable Gunsmith Kit

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to take a peek into something that does not really make an appearance on my bench but is supposed to act like a bench on the go. I of course am talking about my gunsmith kit for lack of a better name. I take this with me on trips or to the range all the time. It is composed of away-from-home essentials, a mish-mash of tools and equipment that may not solve every illness guns can have but it works for a good short-term “just in case” scenario. I hate that feeling of needing something and not having it so that is why long ago I put together this kit. Please excuse its disorganization, things are stacked for fit not for looks. Let’s dive into my portable gunsmith kit!

Good morning everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new reduced blowback YHM Turbo T3 rifle suppressor. Last week we discussed the universal 1.375 x 24 mounting system and it’s applications throughout the industry. This week we get to have a conversation with Karl Brügger, owner and chief visionary of B&T – formerly named Brügger and Thomet. Friday Night Lights: ATAK Drone With Laser! Connecting Drone and LRF To ATAK

While it is not strictly night vision related, it is tangentially related. Especially if you have an ATAK drone and a laser. What am I talking about? Let’s find out.

Concealed Carry Corner: Carrying As A Couple

Welcome back to another episode of Concealed Carry Corner. Last week we talked about what and what not to carry every day. If you guys missed it, be sure to head over and check that article out here. For most guys out there it’s a goal to get their spouse into shooting so it can be an activity for both to enjoy. That’s easier said than done in most cases but with a little practice and confidence boosting, it’s more than possible to be a couple who actively trains and concealed carries. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of carrying as a couple.

Wheelgun Wednesday: KUGS HD410 – Modern 410 Bore 18-Shot Pepperbox

Florian Kohli, the designer of the Swiss KUGS company’s firearms, has an interesting outside-the-box approach to designing firearms and his guns normally have unconventional features and general design. For example, his  KUGS Fatboy single-shot rifle  that we took a look at earlier, has an extremely simplified design and features like a fully threaded barrel and artillery-style sliding breech. What we have for today’s Wheelgun Wednesday is another unusual gun by Florian, an 18-shot 410 Bore pepperbox called HD410. Now, pepperboxes are pretty much extinct species of wheelguns and a modern pepperbox is not something we see too often, to begin with. On top of that, like other Kohli guns, the HD410 is not a common specimen due to its size and design features such as the lack of a trigger and the overpressure safety built into the cylinder. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? If it does, then let’s take a closer look at the design of the KUGS HD410 pepperbox.

The Rimfire Report: The Stevens Pocket Rifle (Bicycle Rifle)

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, ammunition types, and of course its rich history as a special category of firearms and cartridges. Last week we talked a little bit about the basics of suppressing rimfire pistols and rifles. Suppressors are incredibly useful tools across a broad spectrum of firearms and related uses but I’ve found the most joy in combining the rimfire world with the suppressed one. This week we’re once again diving back into the history books to look at another family of somewhat forgotten rimfire guns – the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co. Pocket Rifle or colloquial for the time – the Bicycle Rifle. This relatively obscure family of rimfire firearms was chambered in multiple varieties of rimfire cartridges, weighed less than 3 lbs, and was specifically marketed as a self-defense option in the late 19th century. Today we’ll look at the history of the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Co, some of their successes, the origin of the Pocket Rifle, and how it might have actually influenced some of the more modern firearms designs.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 32: Bipods For Your Favorite Rifle

Hello and welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 32! Bipods have been around nearly as long as firearms. Even primitive hand cannons made as far back as the 12th century have detailed records showing that these gargantuan blasters made use of simple poles or long sticks to stabilize the shooter’s position prior to the shot. Today we do pretty much the same thing (in some cases literally the same thing) but for most of us the trusty bipod has become a more nuanced piece of equipment with some people looking for the lightest possible option, and others looking for the toughest bipods that the planet has to offer. No matter what you’re after, we’ve compiled a handful of great options that are on sale so hopefully, you can round out your latest build with a simple piece of accurizing equipment that you can take with you anywhere your rifle goes.

TFB Armorer's Bench: 3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Gunsmithing

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to roll with a more relaxed article and touch on a topic that rewinds everything quite a bit. This topic actually comes courtesy of fellow TFB writer and AllOutdoor editor Adam S. I had never really considered doing an article like this because it feels like a lifetime ago when I think back to my earliest efforts in the trade. Nonetheless, I agree it may shed some light. In no particular order, let’s dive right into 3 things I wish I knew before gunsmithing.

SILENCER SATURDAY #253: The 1.375 x 24 Universal Mount EXPLAINED

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the YHM Turbo K and YHM R9 suppressors. Last week we started our journey with the FN America M249S crew-served rifle in 5.56mm and 300BLK as a testing platform for suppressors that are rated for machine gun use. While we wait for the parts needed for the NFA “post sample” conversion, let’s talk about a feature of many modern silencers – the universal mount in 1.375 x 24. I find it is helpful to return to the basics for a deeper understanding of how our gear works. Let’s take a look.

Concealed Carry Corner: What To Carry Every Day

With the introduction of the internet and easier access to information about carrying, there’s been a rapid introduction of various concepts and styles of carrying from different instructors. Although this flood of information is great for the community, it can be really tough to decide what exactly you need to carry on your body and what you should carry in your vehicle or bag. Let’s take a closer look at what to carry every day.

Wheelgun Wednesday: The Problem With Two-Piece Barrels And A Solution

Welcome to another edition of TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where we discuss all topics revolving around revolvers. Today’s topic comes from gunsmith Dave Lauck, of D&L Sports, in which he addresses one of the main detractors of the design of two-piece barrels for modern revolvers, which is that they can loosen under recoil over time. The most prominent examples of two-piece barrels comes from the popular Smith & Wesson scandium framed Model 300 series, such as the 325, 327 (aka TRR8 and R8), and 329. While there’s no certainty that each revolver with a two-piece barrel will loosen, people have reported this problem, which can lead to less than optimal conditions for accuracy and safety, so let’s take a look at Mr. Lauck’s solution to loose two-piece barrels.

TFB Podcast Roundup 66: ATF Regs, and Tactical Blindness

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 66. As the year continues to press on and we’re forced to enter yet another cycle of intense politics, the topic of ATF regulations always seems to come to the fore within the firearms world. While we here at TFB like to stay away from the political side of things, the regulations that the ATF puts out affect us directly and so we’ll often address them. Most recently the ATF put a new ruling regarding firearm frames or receivers which has since been subject to an expanded preliminary injunction challenging the ruling by the FPC. Pistol stabilizing braces have also been a pretty hot-button topic this year but for those outside the firearm world what exactly constitutes a pistol or rifle is often still a confusing subject. On that note, we’ll be hearing from Tampa Carry where they explain with visual aids exactly which is what and what federal codes apply to each firearm just to remove all doubt on the subject. We’ll also be hearing from the Firearms Nation podcast and their guest former US Army Sniper John Simpson to talk about the concept of Tactical Blindness and how to deal with it. Please sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s selection of gun podcast content!

The Rimfire Report: The Basics of Suppressing 22LR

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimifre Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many guns, sports, history, and more! Last week we talked a bit about fellow writer Rusty S’s well-put-together Tikka T1x 22LR varmint rifle. While I think everyone can appreciate a really nice 22LR varmint slaying rifle, a lot of you seemed to hold the sentiment that there are other rifles out there that are far less expensive that can probably still take to the task more affordably, and you’re probably all 100% right. I’m all for optimizing setups including my 22LR rifles and pistols and this often means borrowing other parts and accessories from some of my more expensive rigs. However, one thing I try my best not to borrow from is the suppressors for my centerfire guns. Suppressing firearms chambered in 22LR seems like it might be a dead simple task but if you’re trying to optimize your setup then there are a few basic rules you can follow to keep costs down, maintenance intervals low, and have your auto-loading guns running smoothly. Today on The Rimfire Report we’ll go over a few basic methods you can follow for suppressing 22LR rifles and pistols to get the best results.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 31: Dedicated .223/5.56 Riflescopes

The venerable .223 Remington cartridge is considered by many to be the most popular and common in-use cartridge across the United States for rifles. The intermediate cartridge was designed in 1962, received SAAMI certification in 1963, and was eventually developed into the 5.56×45 NATO cartridge in the 1980s as SS109 or M855. Whether you use .223/5.56 as your go-to cartridge in an all-around peace-of-mind firearm or you a dedicated pest control or traditional hunter, having accurate shot placement is made a lot easier with dedicated optics that take the guesswork out of your holdover. Today for TFB Weekly Web Deals 31, we’ll be taking a look at some fresh fall deals on optics specifically designed around the .223 Remington cartridge.

TFB Armorer's Bench: Commentary on the Remington 74 Series

Welcome everyone to the  TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb below, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article, I decided to run through another “commentary” style article since it seems they are well received and doing their job by being informative. This one is going to be centered around the Remington 74 series of semiautomatic hunting rifles. I use the term “74 series” to loosely encapsulate models of Remington rifles that share the same characteristics and similar issues. More so than anything, this article will address Model 740 and 742. Full disclosure: I am no fan of these two rifles or their “improved” later renditions.

If you missed the article last week, be sure to check it out with the link here. This week, we will take a closer look at the trend of customizing carry guns and if they make a massive difference when it comes to self-defense. The aftermarket sector of the gun industry is a massive part of the market and there’s a reason there are so many products for various defensive handguns. Does it make a huge difference though? Let’s take a closer look at stock guns vs customized guns.
