This year (2023) has been a year full of projects and job-specific situations. Frankly, the stuff I really enjoy sharing. Last weekend we started off with an introduction to the latest SureFire rifle suppressor, Today we compare the SureFire SOCOM556 RC3 to the venerable SureFire SOCOM556 RC2 on different barrel lengths of gas operated carbines. Is SureFire’s next generation suppressor quieter than the RC2? Does barrel length matter? I think we all know the answer to that… but let’s dig in anyway.

The number of third generation Glock clones is astounding. Some companies are based solely on taking proven designs and finding ways of making them more appealing to their audiences. For example, Shadow Systems has created their own versions of Glock pistols, but they offer customers all of the upgrades that they were going to do anyway, but straight from the manufacturer. My wife recently bought the DR920 and loves it. I, on the other hand, prefer a more hands-on approach. I decided to put together a parts build G19 clone, entirely from non-Glock parts, and put it up against one from the factory.

Earlier this year in Istanbul, Turkey, the company called TRB Bratunac presented the second generation of their RS 9 Vampir pistol. TFB published photos of the first version of the TRB pistol back in 2017 when it was presented to the public for the first time at the defense expo in Belgrade.

For today’s edition, we have a picture of a very interesting wheelgun that is actually two revolvers merged together at a 90-degree angle. For lack of a better term, I’ll call this gat a double revolver. The picture of this obscure little firearm was taken in the Museum of Ancient Arms of San Marino by a good friend of mine and fellow firearms enthusiast Austin Missett who kindly allowed me to share it with our audience. Unfortunately, there was no information about the origin, design or history of this gun, it was in a display case that just said “Revolvers”. Let’s examine the pictures and see what we can tell about the design of this revolver(s).

I’m sure a lot of you have probably seen the video that has been circulating around social media and forums of some allegedly unfortunate fellow who accidentally gave himself a free vasectomy. The video of the accident is also accompanied by what looks to be discharge papers for the patient listing out the details of the entry and exit wound. While it’s entirely plausible that this video and the supporting document are falsified, I also wouldn’t put it out of the realm of possibility that this guy was simply being wildly irresponsible with his firearm for internet points, and wound up getting a 9mm screening of the Nutcracker. After all, it’s happened several times in the past and this incident seems to follow all the same patterns that the other accidents did. For those of you who can’t watch the video, we’ll go over it in more detail below. Obviously, you shouldn’t do anything like this with your own guns, that goes without saying, but just in case you’re fuzzy on the topic, Don’t point any type of firearm at your groin for internet clout.

At the very end of August, I had the extreme pleasure of going on a tour at the Silencer Cental headquarters where all of the quiet magic happens. Silencer Central formerly Dakota Silencers has been delivering silence for over 15 years (closing in on 20!). This week, I want to talk about another topic that some get really excited about which is carrying in the winter months. There are plenty of benefits to the extra layers but it also presents plenty of problems as well. Let’s take a closer look at the good and bad of winter carry.

It is pretty rare nowadays that a firearm manufacturer surprises me anymore. Some revolver companies will yell, “Look! We put a rail on ours so now you can add a red dot!” Well, we have been clamoring for more red dot ready revolvers for years. No surprise here because my preferred pronouns are accept/red dots. Then, we hear chatter of, “Look! We threaded our revolver for suppressors (even though our revolver can’t be suppressed)!” Honestly, not surprised you did that Heritage Manufacturing. And then, we have Ruger engineers recently breaking into Kel-Tec’s cocaine closet break room only to return home with the idea of: “You know what the revolver community wants… more wheelguns chambered in 22 Hornet!” Touché, Ruger. I did not see that coming (and for those keeping score at home that is 2 cocaine jokes in consecutive weeks; the streak continues). So, this week we are going to check out Ruger’s newest double-action revolver with the unveiling of the Super Redhawk 22 Hornet. Let’s dive in!

The days of the old “levels” of body armor are coming to an end. Finally, the National Institute of Justice released their long-awaited new armor classification guide. Let’s take a look at NIJ 0101.07 and NIJ 0123.00 to see what the new ratings look like. 

Before we get started I’d like to point out as of right now this is purely speculation based off of what we’re seeing currently in the market. A few days ago at the start of December, Vista Outdoors, the principal owner of several popular brands of ammunition, powders, and primers, announced a price increase due to begin at the start of 2024. This increase is in reaction to what Vista Outdoors calls an unprecedented demand for and anticipated global shortage of gunpowder. The full press release has been posted below.
