POTD: Putting The XM7 To The Test At Fort Campbell

Photo Of The Day and we’re looking at Maj. Jonathon Bless as he tests the optics on the XM7 rifle at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. This side-view really shows how big of a beast the XM7 is. As regular readers of TFB surely know by now, the XM7 is a part of the U.S. Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program. Designed by SIG Sauer, the XM7 is a 6.8mm rifle meant to replace the M4 and other legacy rifles, offering greater firepower and range. The XM7 is often paired with the advanced XM157 Fire Control System, which integrates optics and ballistic calculation to assist soldiers in acquiring targets with precision.

“The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) leads the Army's Transformation-in-Contact initiative with the 1st Brigade Combat Team "Bastogne" conducting situational training and live-fire exercises as a part of the Headquarters, Department of the Army's (HQDA) operational assessment.”

Above you can see a squad training exercise with the XM7 rifle.

I still think procurement of this ends up being limited.

I just can’t help but think this is a great platform, but it’s all wrong at the same time.

All I can think of when I see this is that it’s not worth the weight.

With the introduction of AR platforms like the POF Revolution, that essentially package a 7.62x51 into a AR-15 sized rifle, this is unnecessary.

The whole “near peer” thing has been largely disproven.

Go with a POF style AR and chamber it in 6.5 Creedmoor and call it a day.

Excuse you, sir, but SIG SAUER™ would like you to know that such an opinion is not very cash money of you.
