The glory days of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, when you could get a surplus M1 Carbine or Garand for beer money, may be long gone, but a new team-up between the CMP and  Tisas may carry just a little bit of the feeling of those halcyon days. The deal between the CMP and Tisas sees the manufacturer building 1911-pattern semiauto pistols for the firearms safety/training organization. It is the first-ever 1911 production deal that the CMP has made with a commercial manufacturer.

Lapua of Finland is introducing two new cartridge casings in 2024, namely the 300 Winchester Short Magnum (WSM) and 6mm GT. According to Lapua, the 300 WSM provides many advantages among magnum cartridges, delivering energy equal to the 300 Win Mag. It’s conveniently integrated into a short-action rifle design.

The 3-18×42 is the newest kid on the block from Germany’s Schmidt & Bender. This is a compact and versatile riflescope that combines relevant features to make it a true all-rounder for your next hunt. The Schmidt & Bender 3-18×42 hunting riflescope also introduces Schmidt & Bender’s new “LPI” system, an abbreviation for the German term “Leucht-Parallaxe-Integriert,” translating to “Illumination Parallax Integrated.” This illumination control is seamlessly incorporated into the parallax adjustment, providing an improved mounting solution and facilitating easier use for left-handed individuals.

New for 2024, Meprolight has a new successor to their M21 dual illuminated reflex sight. The new M22 reflex is much smaller and lighter than the previous model, and has a streamlined single quick-detach lever. The M22 is illuminated by a combination of fiber optic pipes and tritium, like the M21; however the reticle color has been changed to red.

You probably know Blackhawk best for their holsters. Their Serpa design and dozens of other models have been in common use for duty, concealed carry, and more for many years. They also sell a variety of other gear, apparel, and accessories. Now they are partnering with case manufacturer Eylar in order to expand their brand further. Holosun has grown to be an industry leader in optics in recent years. Many of their red dots and reflex sights have become some of the most popular options on the market, following on from more humble reputational beginnings. They have also dabbled in the night vision game, with their product catalog including a selection of infrared laser and illuminator units. Around SHOT Show 2023, Holosun revealed that they were working on getting deeper into the low-light shooting market by virtue of a pair of upcoming digital prototype optics, one thermal and one standard NV. Now a year later, the night vision model is ready and heading to market soon. Breakthrough Clean Technologies, based in Louisville, Colorado, was founded in 2013. As the name implies, their focus is on cleaning products – primarily for firearms, but they also deal with some other areas like lenses and boats. Their original product was their Military-Grade Solvent, which is currently offered in a spectrum of options from small 15ml spray bottles up to a 5-gallon drum. More recently, they’ve developed a specialized suppressor cleaning solution. At SHOT Show 2024 Range Day, Hoplopfheil shot the new Sako 90 bolt action rifle. The 90 series rifles have a few improvements over the 85 series, including an adjustable trigger and two types of receiver for modern or classic optic mounting. As usual for Sako, the 90 will be available in multiple calibers, multiple action lengths, finishes, and furniture styles.

Both Remington and Federal Ammunition introduced new lines of ammunition at the 2024 SHOT Show. Federal expanded its portfolio by building on the Fusion series. The new offerings aim to enhance shooting accuracy and range, equipped with a polymer tip that improves the ballistic coefficient, flattens trajectories, and intensifies energy for sustained effectiveness at greater distances. Remington announced the expansion of their Core-Lokt Tipped and the introduction of the UMC Leadless lines of ammunition. Just before the SHOT Show, Ruger announced the Generation II version of the American series bolt action rifles, and Hop dropped by to check them out. Like the previous generation, Ruger American Gen II will be available in the standard size as well as the smaller, lighter “Ranch” models. The new features include factory Cerakote, spiral fluted barrels, threaded barrels with an included muzzle brake, a new three-position safety design, and a greatly improved stock with an included cheek riser.

FN America announced an expansion of their FN 509 series pistol at the 2024 SHOT Show. In this episode of TFBT Showtime, Hop checks out the refreshed version of S&W’s venerable budget handgun, the SD9. The history of the SD9 series goes all the way back to the early 90s with the S&W Sigma, but a lot has changed internally and externally since then. The biggest change to the SD9 2.0 is an improved flat face trigger with a lighter and crisper pull than the outgoing SD9VE model, which was in turn improved over the original Sigma. In most other respects, this is a very no-frills design and is among the most affordable products S&W produces.

The new products, including some not-so-secret 5.11 prototypes, cover an extensive range of categories including apparel, load-bearing gear, footwear, as well as professional uniforms and accessories. The new releases emphasize durability, functionality, and comfort – let’s take a look.

Silencer Central showed off the new BANISH Speed K silencer at SHOT Show 2024, designed for use with 5.56 caliber rifles, offering solid sound reduction while maintaining a small footprint. The Speed K features such as clipped-wall baffles, a finned blast chamber, and controlled flow technology, combine to provide a marked reduction in sound without a significant blowback increase.

Magpul Industries recently launched the Magpul TMAG 30 AR/M4 GEN M3, a translucent addition to their GEN M3 magazine series. This new magazine offers a translucent body with an olive drab tint, accommodating 30-rounds of 5.56×45 NATO/.223 Remington caliber ammunition. Magpul also announced the 9mm stainless steel AMAG for SIG P320 pistols.

Firearms manufacturer Rock Island Armory has announced the introduction of the RIA 5.0E, a new addition to the RIA-USA series. Upgrades include, new optics cut and plates, an updated barrel with improved materials and geometry, aggressive slide serrations for easier manipulation, and an Armor Series finish with a diamond-like carbon coating.

Palmetto State Armory came out swinging this year at SHOT Show with a ton of prototype and concept guns. Hop stopped by to take a look at the most talked about concept so far: the X5.7 PDW. The X5.7 is chambered in 5.7x28mm like PSA’s own Rock pistol and uses the same magazines. Some aspects of the X5.7 PDW are still being refined, but it will have a spring-loaded pistol brace, and take standard AR charging handles.

Elite Tactical Systems has introduced the ETS Omega magazine, designed to seamlessly integrate hardened steel with their signature polymer design. The magazine is made for GLOCK pistols, and the development addresses the need for a reliable and durable magazine that doesn’t compromise on weight or convenience.

RISE Armament recently announced the release of the Watchman XR rifle in 22 ARC. Built for shooters who require highly accurate, extended-range shooting for hunting varmints, whitetails, and antelope, as well as Precision Rifle Series (PRS) competitions and tactical/law enforcement applications. RISE also introduced the Reliant trigger for REM 700 and clone actions. Let’s take a look at the RISE Armament Watchman XR 22 rifle.

In this episode of TFBTV, Hop checks in with Mike from H&R and NoDakSpud to take a look at the new 633 style 9mm “DOE” AR. H&R has been expanding its lineup of retro and “clone correct” AR builds for the last few years to include 9mm ARs using the Colt stick magazine pattern. The H&R DOE 9mm will be a mostly faithful reproduction with a few subtle tweaks to make it more appealing to shooters.

Savage Arms has expanded its product range with the introduction of the AccuCan line of suppressors in three multi-caliber options. The new Savage Arms Accucan suppressors are designed for a balance of weight, field serviceability, and sound suppression, flash reduction, and reduced recoil. Savage has also introduced a handful of new rifles, including the 110 Magpul Scout and the 110 Ultralite Elite.

Yankee Hill Machine (YHM), a manufacturer of firearms, suppressors, and firearm accessories, announced the release of the YHM Bad Larry suppressor, a new addition to their sound silencer line, tailored for long-range shooters who use .338 and other large calibers. YHM introduced the Bad Larry today, aiming to meet the durability, sound reduction, and versatility demands of big game hunting, competitive shooting, and military applications.

New for 2024, Daniel Defense is bringing their first-ever pistol caliber carbine to market. Hop dropped in on a rain-soaked Daniel Defense range day to shoot it and get the details. The aptly but boringly named DD PCC is built around the readily available 9mm CZ Scorpion magazine pattern and has fully ambidextrous controls mirrored on both sides of the receiver. Recoil is mitigated by a hydraulic buffer system from Kynshot. Most of the other parts are standard to the AR platform. The Daniel Defense PCC will be available initially with a 16″ barrel or as a factory SBR with an 8.5″ barrel, both paired with the Daniel Defense MFR M-LOK handguard.

SIG SAUER unveiled their MCX-SPEAR LT series of firearms in the fall of 2022, following up from the prior release of their large-frame SPEAR model. The original SPEAR is essentially the commercial version of their DoD Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program entry to replace the military’s aging M4 carbines. The LT versions were added to maintain the design’s advantages while bringing additional options to buyers in further chamberings, such as 5.56 or 300 BLK. Now SIG has announced the release of a new special edition of their popular SPEAR LT, which is offered in Multicam thanks to their partnership with custom Cerakote gurus Blowndeadline, rather than the series’ standard FDE or black.
