Concealed Carry Corner: Self-Defense Shooting Distances

When looking at self-defense training, the vast majority of people will focus on closer engagements with their carry handgun. This is widely accepted since the most common self-defense shootings are very close quarters for a short amount of time. The recent mall shooting in Indianapolis is an interesting case study that suggests otherwise when it comes to self-defense training. It’s definitely an interesting topic to look at since the most common handguns for concealed carry are relatively small, so taking longer distance shots with those will be incredibly difficult. Let’s take a closer look at what you need to know when it comes to self-defense shooting distances.

POTD: Cabot Moonshot 1911 Pistol

Today is the National Moon Day! 53 years ago, on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module Eagle of Apollo 11 spaceflight landed on the surface of Earth’s only natural satellite. A little over six hours after the landing (which was already July 21st UTC),  Neil Armstrong, the commander of Apollo 11, stepped on the surface of the Moon. Indeed, it was one small step for a man but one giant leap for mankind. In today’s Photo Of The Day, we are taking a look at the Cabot Moonshot 1911, a custom pistol dedicated to this important event in the history of the human race.

Wheelgun Wednesday: A New Custom Take On The Apache Revolver

Thanks for joining us for another edition of TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where all revolvery topics are on the table. This week, we’ll take a look at a custom project submitted by a reader, that he’s dubbed the “Apache Pug” which was derived from the foldable Apache revolver of old that also incorporated knives and knuckle dusters. Rudukai13 set out to explore this interesting topic by creating his own modern version of the Apache revolver, the name of which stems from a violent, French gang “Les Apaches” that chose their name based on the brutal reputation of the American Apache tribe. Les Apaches were also known to carry knuckle duster style revolvers, and the namesake was transposed to the style of revolver designed by Dolne. Let’s take a look.

Han Shot First: RIA Auctions Off Han Solo's DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol

There are a handful of prop guns that I know almost anyone would want to have as part of their private collection. James Bond’s Walther PPK, John McClane’s Beretta 92, a genuine prop M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens, or even Han Solo’s famous DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol. Like most Star Wars “blaster” props, the DL-44 Blaster Pistol used by Han Solo in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope is actually a real firearm with a bunch of stuff tacked onto it – not too dissimilar from 90% of the firearms you’d find on  Hot Gat or Fudd Crap. The DL-44 is now being put up for auction through the Rock Island Auction Company meaning if you’ve got the scratch, you can now potentially own a piece of well-known silver screen history.

TFB Armorer's Bench: By The Armorer Book – Glock Maintenance

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by  WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and  Frankford Arsenal, I decided it would be a fun exercise to go through the maintenance portion of the Glock Armorer’s Manual and demonstrate or explain what they say in the book. I myself do not own a Glock so my TFB coworker and AllOutdoor editor Adam S loaned me his Glock to demonstrate on and he also got a free gun cleaning. Fair trade! Let’s dive right into Glock maintenance by the (Glock Armorer’s) book!

TFB Review: XS R3D SA-35 Night Sights – Worth the Upgrade?

The SA-35 handgun from Springfield Armory made waves late last year when it was officially unveiled to the public. Those who had been seeking a Hi-Power pistol were finally able to get their hands on something authentic to the original design, but with a few modernized changes. My initial experiences with the handgun did in fact give me that authentic Hi-Power feeling with its natural pointability, fit in the hand, and crisp, light single-action trigger pull. If you’re planning on carrying the SA-35 or find yourself struggling a bit to quickly pick up a sight picture, perhaps a small upgrade is in order. XS Sights recently released their XS R3D night sights for the SA-35 pistol, and today we’ll be taking a quick gander at them on the SA-35 to see what kind of benefits they offer over the standard sights Springfield currently offers.

Concealed Carry Corner: Offensive vs Defensive Protection

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to head back down to the Academy training center to take a pistol barricade course from legendary trainer Ric Sutton. After the first day of the course, we ended up all going out to the local Mexican restaurant to just have dinner and chat about the course and shooting in general. We started getting into the difference between defensive shooting and offensive self-defense which doesn’t get talked about much in the mainstream gun community. Let’s take a closer look at offensive vs defensive protection.

Slow-Motion Malfunction – Seeing The Unseen

Ever since I bought a Chronos 1.4 high-speed camera, I have used it to document a lot of things. Most of them are firearm related. One benefit to having a high-speed camera is the ability to slow down fast events that are often too fast for our eyes to see let alone understand. One example is a firearm malfunction. We may know how to clear a malfunction but do we understand why it is happening so we can address the problem rather than perform remedial actions? Here we take a closer look at what causes a slow-motion malfunction.

TFB B-Side Podcast: The History of Hi-Point with Dave Kiwacka

In this episode of the TFB B-Side podcast, we’ve brought on Dave Kiwacka to talk a bit about the history of the Hi-Point Firearms company. Hi-Point is probably most well known for its very affordable firearms. While they may lack the polish and flashiness of higher-priced firearms, what they lack in that department they more than make up for in raw affordability and durability. TFBTV Executive Producer James Reeves has done some pretty extensive reliability and durability tests on both their handguns and carbines and found them to excel in both categories. Many Hi-Point customers out there are still waiting on the much anticipated Yeet Cannon or YC-9 which is set to bring new features, more magazine capacity, and optics capability to the Hi-Point line. Today Dave and I talk a bit about the origin story of Hi-Point Firearms, their ethos as an American company, and where they’re at in terms of progress on the YC-9.

TFB Review: CZ's New Bren 2 MS Pistol

In today’s rifle market, there are endless variants of the beloved AR-15. There’s a good reason the AR-15 is so popular and considered America’s Rifle with its ergonomics and accuracy along with reliability. The problem is once you own a few, they become fairly common and lately, that’s where I’ve been. I wanted something different in a rifle, something that is easy to shoot but isn’t the same as every other rifle. I started looking at the CZ-USA Bren 2 MS a while back and after some debating, I ended up purchasing one to put through its paces. Let’s take a closer look at the CZ’s new Bren 2 MS pistol.

Wheelgun Wednesday: What We Love About Revolvers! What Do You Love?

Revolvers seem to be a controversial topic in the gun community, people either seem to love them or hate them, and perhaps there is a segment somewhere in the middle that looks at them historically. On this week’s Wheelgun Wednesday, I thought we’d take a peek at what we at TFB love about revolvers, and we certainly want to hear from our readers about what you love about revolvers as well.

Hear about this unusual and uncommon revolver on today’s TFBTV video.

Concealed Carry Corner: Popular Carry Gun Shakedown

When we think of carrying concealed guns, we oftentimes go back and forth about the pros and cons when it comes to size vs shootability. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the argument for either smaller guns to carry versus carrying larger handguns that are easier to shoot under stress. I ended up deciding to take a few of the most popular handgun models on the market and do a simple drill from 10 yards to see how well each does comparatively. Let’s take a closer look at how each pistol did in our popular carry gun shakedown.
