TFB Podcast Roundup 48: Podcasts For Your Dad

Happy belated Father’s Day everyone and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 48. Most of our dads, are responsible for us getting into guns. My dad introduced me to guns at a young age and taught me the basics of safety, proper marksmanship principles, and also the importance of the 2nd Amendment. As a former citizen of another country that had gone through a pretty severe restriction of gun rights during his lifetime, immigrating to the United States and becoming familiar with the 2nd Amendment spoke to my dad in a way that I don’t think many other people can honestly share and he made it a point to share that same sentiment with me as I grew up. I’ve gathered a number of podcasts today on these subjects and hopefully, both fathers, sons, and daughters can share in these weekly broadcasts to help reaffirm our 2nd Amendment rights and the security and joy that firearms often bring us.

The Rimfire Report: Rimfire Reliability – Is it Really That Bad?

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! Last week we took a look at the practical application of .22WMR and whether or not it would make for a suitable stand-in as a self-defense cartridge. Although .22WMR is magnitudes more powerful than even the hottest of .22LR cartridges, many of you held the same sentiment towards it as you do .22LR – it’s just not powerful enough or reliable enough to feel comfortable carrying when you have other options available to you. The last part of that reasoning caught my attention as I’ve actually never had a failure to fire that I can remember when using .22WMR. So today I wanted to take a closer look at the reliability of various rimfire cartridges based on my experiences, and the experiences of others, to ascertain whether the infamous rimfire reliability gun lore is actually that bad.

An Overview and Review of InRangeTV's Woodland Brutality 2022

Firearms competitions are addicting. When I started shooting Steel Challenge about 12 years ago, I never thought I’d wind up where I am today in the firearms competition world. I’m not good by any means but I didn’t think I’d find myself trying almost any and every firearms-related competition that I could make it to. My latest venture found me attending InRangeTV’s Woodland Brutality 2022. What is Woodland Brutality? It is essentially a Two-Gun Action Challenge match that is located in a wooded area of the country, specifically the hills of West Virginia in the case of the 2022 and quite possibly the 2023 match. According to the original creators of the event, these Brutality matches are highly focused on providing a challenging and fun shooting event that is weighted heavily towards more moving and less spraying bullets at paper targets. Today I’ll give you guys a brief overview of each stage from Woodland Brutality 2022 as well as some of my thoughts about the event and what I think it offers those who might want to participate in a firearms competition but just haven’t bit the bullet yet.

Concealed Carry Corner: Smaller Isn't Always Better

With summertime hitting the Northeast and Midwest states full force this week, there’s no better time to look at carrying smaller guns. Individuals who live in the great north have lost their security blanket of layered clothing and heavy coats with the rush of hot summer weather. For most, the general trend is to carry the smallest handgun possible in an effort to make carrying more comfortable. There’s no denying that carrying a smaller pistol does make life easier in the hot summer months, but there are also disadvantages to really small carry guns. Let’s take a closer look at why smaller isn’t always better when it comes to carrying a concealed firearm.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Highly Customized Smith & Wesson 617 in France

Welcome to TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where we explore the world of revolvers, past, present, and occasionally of the future. This week, we’ll take a look at an expertly customized Smith & Wesson 617, by a French gunsmith, Cédric, also known as cedric_armurier on Instagram. All of Cédric’s posts have been a joy to see, and I’m grateful he’s permitted me to share this project with you. He works on many types of guns, 1911s, CZs, and S&W Victory pistols, to name a few, but I’ve particularly enjoyed his work on S&W wheelguns. Let’s take a look at his work on the Smith & Wesson 617 chambered in .22LR.

TFB Podcast Roundup 47: There's Always More to Learn

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 47! Podcasts are a great way to expose yourself to new ideas in reference to a subject you’re already interested in. I’ve learned a lot while listening to gun podcasts and I have a very close friend of mine who is a dedicated gun podcast listener as well who draws a lot of knowledge from them just as I do. I think it’s worth mentioning that while I do gain a lot of knowledge from these podcasts, I don’t always agree with everything that is said, and having them posted here isn’t always an endorsement of the information but rather an olive branch to fellow gun nerds out there who may enjoy the content more than I would. We’re fortunate enough in this modern age to have access to not only a wide variety of firearms, but also a wide variety of opinions from pundits whose skills, experiences, and knowledge far surpass our own – for free. Just food for thought as we go into this week’s set of episodes for TFB Podcast Roundup 47.

The Rimfire Report: Is 22 Magnum A Viable Concealed Carry Cartridge?

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its various guns, gear, sports, and ammunition. Last week we talked a bit about CCI Stingers for use as a concealed carry .22LR cartridge. Once again we saw that although the round can get pretty fast and expand pretty aggressively out of a rifle, it really doesn’t hold up when shot from a backup-sized pistol. That being said, if it’s all you’ve got or all you can manage to carry, it is most certainly better than nothing when it comes to a defensive shooting situation. 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire is the big brother of .22LR and many of you have expressed interest in its viability as a concealed carry cartridge. With the recent release of the Walther WMP – a full-size semi-auto optics-ready .22 WMR pistol – the question has come up in my mind once again to determine whether or not .22 Magnum might actually make for a decent lighter-recoil self-defense cartridge for concealed carry. So today we’ll be taking a closer look at the performance metrics of .22 Magnum to see how well it holds up compared to other lighter recoil options for concealed carry.

TFB Weekly Web Deals 12: Deals to Stay Prepared

Every so often, national events occur in such a way that there is always a mass panic for specific firearms goods. Most notably ammunition, receivers, and magazines. This isn’t really a surprise to most of us who have been through the wringer a couple of times but to the uninformed, it might seem a bit crazy. Do you really need that much ammunition? Who really needs 200 PMAGS? What are you really going to do with all those stripped lower receivers? The fact of the matter is, that ammunition gets shot up, magazines break and wear down with constant use, and lower receivers are always great to have around as paperweights. Today’s weekly web deals are going to focus on things that people often make a bull rush for in times of panic – you know the kind I’m talking about. Welcome to TFB Weekly Web deals 12.

TFB Armorer's Bench: Using The Intellidropper Powder Measure

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by  WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and  Frankford Arsenal, I decided to dive back into the Frankford Arsenal Intellidropper Powder Measure that I covered in a small Closer Look article last week. This time I am gonna talk about my experience using it. This was a short couple-hour experience of reloading some .30 Carbine ammunition but I plan on doing some other cartridges with the Intellidropper in the future. That being said, I am excited to dive into my experience using the Frankford Arsenal Intellidropper!

Muzzle Dip? Strange Unexplained Physics In Non-Firearm Pistol Recoil

As you might have guessed from some of the articles I have written this year, I have been going down a slow-motion camera rabbit hole. On a forum for the Chronos high-speed camera, I came across a user’s video recording airsoft guns in high speed. What caught my attention was a peculiar event when he shot semi-automatic gas blowback pistols that have reciprocating slides. As the slide reciprocates back, the pistol exhibits muzzle dip. I was confused by what I was seeing so I investigated further.

Pawn Shop Finds – The Explosive KelTec P11

Out of all the guns I’ve bought for the Pawn Shop Finds, I never really worried about them being unsafe or having issues despite being dirt cheap. Usually, in the past, I have found some incredibly unique pieces and wild bargains but this one was different from the rest. I think this is a great lesson for everyone when it comes to buying used firearms and what to look at when deciding on a particular firearm. When it comes down to facts, all firearms are mechanical tools that can wear out with enough use.  Let’s take a closer look at my recent luck with my extremely worn KelTec P11.

Concealed Carry Corner: Ways to Draw Faster

When it comes to training for self-defense, there are typically three vital parts to successfully protecting yourself. The biggest step is avoidance at all cost, you win every fight you’re never in so that’s the biggest step to remaining safe. The second step is draw stroke and ultimately if things get bad enough the third is shot placement. Pulling your firearm should be absolutely the last resort but there are occasions when there’s no other choice. We’ve talked a few times about certain drills for shot placement and working on your pistol accuracy under stress. One thing we haven’t really looked at is draw stroke and some tips to give you the upper hand when it comes to a faster draw stroke. Let’s take a closer look at ways to draw faster.

The Rimfire Report: The Ultra Hot CCI Stinger In Ballistic Gelatin

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm universe. Last week, we looked at the unique and exciting MK4 Carbine Upper Receiver Firearm, a joint venture between competitive shooter Wade Reed and MaddMacs Precision. A lot of you thought the design was quite inventive. In contrast, others kinda turned their noses up at it in favor of the already compact Ruger 10/22 Charger which does have the benefit of having a bit more modularity and magazine capacity but is undoubtedly much heavier and bulkier than the MK4 Carbine can be. Personally, I thought the MK4 Carbine was a neat idea and it would honestly be a great backpacking gun – especially if there was a way to get more than 10-rounds to a magazine in it. Loaded up with some hot ammo, the MK4 could be a great hunting or even a self-defense firearm in a pinch. Speaking of hot ammo, we’re back again this week doing another ballistic gel test, this time featuring CCI Stinger 36-grain Hollow Points. A lot of you had requested that we test out these hot little cartridges to see how well they’d perform out of a handful of firearms ranging from pocket pistols up to the 10/22 rifle. So today we’ll be taking a look at the data I collected for the CCI Stinger cartridge and see how it stacks up to our previous 22LR ballistic gel tests.

Whenever someone gets a new carry gun or sees something interesting, we will typically send it to the group chat to have a discussion on a certain firearm. After some conversations, I decided to go through the various firearms most of us at TFB carry on a daily basis. Let’s take a closer look at some of the carry guns of TFB.

The StAr-15 Open Source AR15 Upper Receiver Firearm

Most custom AR builds often start with a purchase of a lower receiver. After that, it’s pretty much picking out and selecting the components you want that will work with your build and assembling everything. But what if you wanted to make a truly custom AR? One that foregoes the conventional terms of what a firearms “part” is? Well, once again, we have our good friend and dedicated reader Stubbs here to show us the way it’s done. Stubbs is proud to introduce his latest DIY creation, the StAr-15 Open Source AR15 Upper Receiver Firearm. The goal of the StAr-15 is to take the general operating principle of the “standard” AR-15 rifle and make it as inexpensive as possible and also avoid any registered firearms parts. Today we’ll be taking a look at the StAr-15 and how Stubbs cobbled this random assemblage of parts into a functioning DIY firearm.
