UK Purchases AKs To Train Ukrainian Troops

On the 9th of July, the UK’s Ministry of Defence announced that as part of its agreement to train 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers it had acquired a significant number of AK-pattern rifles. Initially sharing only one, fairly low res photograph the official announcement stated that:

TFB Podcast Roundup 53: Hearing Protection, and Space Cowboys

Hello and welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 53! Every year I think the gun industry goes through an intense cycle of focusing on hearing protection and this inevitably sparks discussion around suppressors and other sound mitigation techniques. While over-the-ear hearing protection becomes a must, especially with supersonic or much more powerful or larger cartridges, with many standard intermediate cartridges, a suppressor is often the way to go. In one particular episode that caught my attention this week, Vortex Nation has on audiologist Grace Sturdivant, owner of OtoPro Technologies, to talk about the human ear, how it works, and what really needs to happen in order for us to protect our hearing while handling and enjoying firearms. In addition to that great episode, we’ve got other good podcasts for your commute, chore list, or study session. Sit back, relax and enjoy this week’s selection of gun-related podcast content for TFB Podcast Roundup 53!

The Rimfire Report: The Bandera OpenTop 11/22 Pistol

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world! The OpenTop 11/22 has been a semi-frequent topic of discussion here at TFB. Developed originally by Sebastian Unger and put into production with the help of Fletcher Rifle Works, the 11/22 has thus far proved to be a vast improvement over the standard Ruger 10/22 platform and in my personal opinion represents the next logical step in the evolution of the trusted rimfire platform. Since the release of the OpenTop 11/22 receiver, Fletcher Rifle Works has put together a number of new projects including their very own chassis-equipped pistol – The Bandera Pistol. The Bandera OpenTop 11/22 comes packed from the factory with a ton of great options and improved components to give the end user something a bit more than you’d expect from a standard 10/22 Charger – for an obvious increase in price. Is that price increase worth what you’re getting with the Bandera OpenTop? Let’s find out!

TFB Weekly Web Deals 18: Gunsmithing Tools and Accessories

Hello and welcome to TFB Weekly Web Deals 18. I’ve been having a lot of recent discussions with some gunsmiths including our very own Sam S. Like a lot of you out there, I have a litany of tools strewn about several different tool boxes, and it’s not only highly disorganized at this point, I also have tools in there I’ve only used once and forgotten about. However, if you’re just getting into gunsmithing or you’re looking for some good, basic tools to get your collection started (or set up as a nice gift for a friend), I’ve brought you some of the best suggestions for gunsmithing equipment as recommended by Sam. Let us know what you use and what tools you’d recommend down in the comments below!

TFB Armorer's Bench: Complete AR15 Assembly - Lower Receiver

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by  WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and  Frankford Arsenal, we’ll show how to completely assemble an AR15 lower receiver. Previously, I covered the disassembly of the  lower receiver, bolt carrier group, and upper receiver. I am well aware that most of the folks who pass through these parts are into the new, cool, and tacticool. I personally love older and obsolete stuff but I also like to take things apart and put them back together. That being said, we here at TFB thought it would be nice to have a resource available for disassembling and assembling an AR15.

Friday Night Lights: Night Vision Or Thermal? Which One Is Right For You?

Welcome back to another Friday Night Lights. This week I decided to take a step back in case we have some newer readers who are still deciding what they should buy next, night vision or thermal. That is a loaded question. Almost like deciding if you should buy a rifle or a handgun. It is all personal preference and while both can be used for some activities, they are better suited for specific tasks. They have their pros and cons and we will illuminate them.

Guns And Night Vision At IEA MIL Optics In Germany

Last month I was in Germany for a week. While I was there, I stopped by to check out IEA MIL Optics. I know them as one of the premier night vision dealers in Europe. They are an L3, Unity Tactical, EOTech and Wilcox dealer. They have other products not just those and they are a firearms dealer. Their head of workshop, Leon Kurz, gave me a tour of their gun room. They have some very interesting firearms.

Concealed Carry Corner: Open vs Closed Emitter Red Dots For Carrying

When it comes to advancements in carry pistols, one of the most recent jumps in technology has to be the addition of small red dots. Whether it’s the classic Trijicon RMR or any of the other options to plunge into this market, there are a ton of different variations when it comes to handgun optics. I get asked fairly often what the benefit of having one style or the other for concealed carry since there are so many manufacturers supporting this area of the market. Let’s take a closer look at some of the differences when it comes to open vs closed emitter red dots for carrying.

Wheelgun Wednesday: Wild Bill Hickok's Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Army Revolver

In one of the previous installments of our Wheelgun Wednesday weekly article series, we took a look at a  Colt 1851 Navy revolver attributed to Wild Bill Hickok that was consigned to May 2022 Rock Island Premier Firearms Auction. Although everything indicated that the revolver belonged to Wild Bill, it was not 100% proven, but apparently, that was enough for the buyer who parted with $616,875 to purchase the revolver, a price that way exceeded the auction house’s estimated high price of $225,000. What we have in today’s edition of Wheelgun Wednesday is another Wild Bill Hickok revolver, a Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Army, which is consigned to the upcoming August 2022 Rock Island Premier Firearms Auction. According to Rock Island Auction Company, this revolver is solidly documented as owned and carried by Wild Bill Hickok.

The Special Poverty Rifle, Part 1: Buying Parts and Building

A short while back I was challenged by fellow TFB Staff member James Reeves (you may have heard of him), to build an SPR as cheap as possible. Well, myself being an unapologetic “poor”, I, of course, took him up on the challenge and started the project Special Poverty Rifle.

TFB Podcast Roundup 52: Old Guests and New Podcasts

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 52! There is certainly a lot going on in the legislative arm of the firearms world these days and I hope that most of you are at least staying informed on what’s along the horizon for us as American gun owners. The summer months have also brought what seems like a whole new scene of gun owners and self-defense-oriented products and content, most likely because of a recent incident where a concealed carrier managed to stop a criminal from murdering many people at a shopping mall in Indiana. No doubt there will probably be plenty of talks analyzing the various information surrounding the incident and we’ll be sure to include them in this edition of the TFB Podcast Roundup. However, what is most interesting to me about the whole event is that it opened up a new discussion about what it means to be “accurate” with a pistol. Don’t know what I mean? Check out the Dicken Drill, go and shoot it and let us know what kind of results you get!

The Rimfire Report: The Best DIY Upgrade For Your Henry AR-7

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is all about the rimfire firearm world and its many firearms, ammunition, shooting sports, and history! Last week we did a direct comparison of a dedicated integrally suppressed rimfire Integra 15-22 upper and a Form 1 oil filter suppressor. In that article, we discovered that although the integrally suppressed rifle works beautifully, it has a few drawbacks, and the same goes for the oil filter suppressor. Ultimately, my pick would be the Integra 15-22 for its straightforward design and sleek, low-profile suppressor that still allows you to use red dots without a ridiculously high riser. In any case, suppressors only serve to add to the fun when it comes to rimfire guns, at least in my opinion. This week we’re digging back a bit further into the Rimfire Report archives to bring back a perhaps infamous firearm from the series. That’s right, I’ve gone and dunked my Henry AR-7 into the water again. However, this time I didn’t manage to lose one of the most crucial parts to the build (the barrel), and as a result, it almost immediately became covered in rust, as did the magazines. Not happy with the low resistance to such corrosion, I set out last week to better “weatherproof” the Henry AR-7. Today I’ll be sharing this process with you and showing you where I succeeded, and where I could probably have done a bit better with the whole process.

TFB Armorer's Bench: Cleaning Up and Fire Bluing Screws

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. In this article sponsored by  WheelerTiptonCaldwell, and  Frankford Arsenal, I decided to do a sort of impromptu tutorial on how to clean up some messed-up flat head screw heads and fire bluing them as a bonus. Originally this particular weekend I was going to start on our AR15 assembly stack of articles (it has been a while since we took one apart, I know) and talk about potential upgrades. Unfortunately, I ran out of time to do the AR15 stuff but I had this stuff on the back burner for a reason. Let’s dive right into cleaning pp and fire bluing screws!

TFB Review: DIY KelTec RSB SU16 Bullpup – The Fugliest Bullpup

Last February my FFL acquired a large estate sale of firearms. Most of them were mundane Girsans, Bersas, and PSA lowers. There are other guns but the Keltec SU16 box piqued my interest. This is where I discovered the fugliest bullpup. When we opened the box, this abomination was lurking inside. We were so confused by what we saw. I looked at it more closely and decided I should adopt this SU16 bullpup and share it with the world.

Concealed Carry Corner: Self-Defense Shooting Distances

When looking at self-defense training, the vast majority of people will focus on closer engagements with their carry handgun. This is widely accepted since the most common self-defense shootings are very close quarters for a short amount of time. The recent mall shooting in Indianapolis is an interesting case study that suggests otherwise when it comes to self-defense training. It’s definitely an interesting topic to look at since the most common handguns for concealed carry are relatively small, so taking longer distance shots with those will be incredibly difficult. Let’s take a closer look at what you need to know when it comes to self-defense shooting distances.

Wheelgun Wednesday: A New Custom Take On The Apache Revolver

Thanks for joining us for another edition of TFB’s Wheelgun Wednesday, where all revolvery topics are on the table. This week, we’ll take a look at a custom project submitted by a reader, that he’s dubbed the “Apache Pug” which was derived from the foldable Apache revolver of old that also incorporated knives and knuckle dusters. Rudukai13 set out to explore this interesting topic by creating his own modern version of the Apache revolver, the name of which stems from a violent, French gang “Les Apaches” that chose their name based on the brutal reputation of the American Apache tribe. Les Apaches were also known to carry knuckle duster style revolvers, and the namesake was transposed to the style of revolver designed by Dolne. Let’s take a look.

Slo-Mo WWII Machine Guns On The 4th Of July

This past July 4th my friend Victor got access to a collection of guns. My friend Kythe and I tagged along to check them out and shoot them of course. I was more interested in filming some machine guns in slow motion so we selected a few guns to shoot and film. We decided to focus on slo-mo WWII machine guns and a Luger pistol. I figured filming the toggle action on the Luger in slow motion would be fun.

TFB Podcast Roundup 51: Something for Everyone

Welcome to TFB Podcast Roundup 51! The podcasting scene continues to change and evolve as time goes on and while this often sees many great podcasts disappear completely from the internet, it also means that there is almost always something new to listen to if you’ve grown bored of the generic pop music that is always piped through the airwaves. One podcast we frequently feature here on the TFB Podcast Roundup is Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk Radio. I had a chance to finally meet with, speak to, and shoot with Tom at a recent firearms media event and much like I’ve said in the past, Tom also thinks that these online public conversations are not only important but bring the firearms community together as a whole. In honor of that sentiment, this week we’re going to try to get you a bit more variety in terms of what type of firearms content is featured in each podcast.

The Rimfire Report: Gemtech Integra Suppressed Upper vs Oil Filter

Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This ongoing series is about the rimfire firearm world and its various arms, ammunition, and shooting sports. Last week we took another look at the SIG Sauer P322 22LR pistol. My personal P322 has hit over 10,000 rounds in just under 4 months and is showing no signs of stopping so far and I’m going to try to reach 20,000 in 2023 sometime. This week, however, I was finally able to get my hands on a genuine Gemtech Integra 15-22 Integrally suppressed upper. Today we’ll take a look at both it, and another 15-22 pistol upper topped with an oil filter suppressor to see how the two opposite ends of the spectrum stack up in the .22LR suppression game.

TFB Armorer's Bench: By The Armorer Book – Glock Maintenance

Welcome everyone to the TFB Armorer’s Bench! As mentioned in the little blurb, this series will focus on a lot of home armorer and gunsmith activities. I myself do not own a Glock so my TFB coworker and AllOutdoor editor Adam S loaned me his Glock to demonstrate on and he also got a free gun cleaning. Fair trade! Concealed Carry Corner: Offensive vs Defensive Protection

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to head back down to the Academy training center to take a pistol barricade course from legendary trainer Ric Sutton. After the first day of the course, we ended up all going out to the local Mexican restaurant to just have dinner and chat about the course and shooting in general. We started getting into the difference between defensive shooting and offensive self-defense which doesn’t get talked about much in the mainstream gun community. Let’s take a closer look at offensive vs defensive protection.

Wheelgun Wednesday: What We Love About Revolvers! What Do You Love?

Revolvers seem to be a controversial topic in the gun community, people either seem to love them or hate them, and perhaps there is a segment somewhere in the middle that looks at them historically. On this week’s Wheelgun Wednesday, I thought we’d take a peek at what we at TFB love about revolvers, and we certainly want to hear from our readers about what you love about revolvers as well.
