Modern Intermediate Calibers 013: The .17 Caliber Remington Family

Up to this point we’ve looked at calibers ranging from 5.56mm to 7.62mm, but today we’re going to look at something smaller… A lot smaller. The smallest caliber size that is feasible for a given current barrelmaking and projectile manufacture technology is .173″/4.32mm, and a natural centerfire platform for that caliber is the common 5.56mm case. This has led to a large number of cartridge types developed  – including the privately designed .17 Remington, and the German 4.3x45mm DAG – that are essentially similar, and so we will cover them under one umbrella here. Representative of this type in a military context is the Frankford Arsenal’s 4.32x45mm, which was loaded with a relatively low drag 27 grain full metal jacket projectile which – like the 5.56x38mm FABRL covered recently – possessed approximately the same ballistic coefficient as the 5.56mm 55gr M193 projectile. This means the 4.32x45mm Frankford represents essentially an alternate approach to duplicating the M193 round in a lighter package, by reducing the caliber instead of making the projectile lighter and longer.

Colt Introduces The CE2000 Expanse Carbine

Colt has introduced another rifle in their Expanse budget rifle lineup with a second model more in line with what shooters expect when buying a carbine AR-15. Just before SHOT Show 2016 Colt announced that they would be building a budget rifle that had a planned MSRP of just $699 to directly compete with some of the best selling carbines on the market. We have one of the CE1000 rifles in for review, and at a glance, it is nothing short of impressive. John Moses Browning’s greatest gift to mankind the 1911 is regarded as having one of the best feeling pistol grips of all time. It’s slim, it has the perfect angle and it just feels right. Even if you prefer modern plastic pistols or wheel guns I’m sure some of you agree. So why not add a 1911 pistol grip to the most popular modern sporting rifle in the USA? Well now you can!

The Canadian Non-Restricted "AR-10" & AR-15 – Albert Tactical "Modern" Series

As politicians pass laws, its inevitable that ingenious people with a passion will do everything they can find the limit of the letter of the law. Latest up is a company not based in the United States, but rather Canada, long known for its direct ban on both the AR-15 and AK-47 weapon systems. Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply, located in (you guessed it), Alberta Canada has announced the pre-order the “Modern” series of rifles, a non-restricted non-AR AR.

BREAKING: US Army Introduces New Enhanced Performance Magazine for M4/M16 Series Rifles

The US Army has taken one more step towards further improving the reliability of the controversial M16 and M4 series of rifles, according to a TACOM announcement. The Army is introducing a new pattern of magazine to supplant the older black, green, and tan follower magazines, respectively. Called the “Enhanced Performance Magazine”, the new pattern sports a tan magazine body and a blue follower, for identification, and boasts a 300% increase in the mean number of rounds between stoppages when used in the M4 Carbine. Unlike previous magazines, the EPM uses a new, modified magazine body (and therefore not interchangeable, hence the different color) which presents the rounds at a more favorable angle to the rifle’s feedway, improving reliability and, importantly, preventing the hardened steel tips of new 5.56mm M855A1 Enhanced Performance Rounds from contacting the aluminum feed ramp section on M4 type rifles.

New Iron City Rifle Works Tactical Advantage Bolt Carrier Groups

I will admit, prior to this press release being emailed to me I was blissfully unaware of Iron City Rifle Works and their products. Every now and then even though I try to stay pretty in tune to what is going on in the shooting sports world a manufacture somehow hides from me. Now that I have had a chance to look over Iron City’s inventory, I think I am going to have to part with some money as soon as they get that Copperhead bolt carrier group back in stock.
