One Big Blind: New Hunting Blind from Ameristep

There’s a new hunting blind coming to the woods near you, and it’s hard to miss. That’s because it measures 6 feet tall, 6 feet wide, and stands 7 feet tall (yes, really). The company behind this behemoth is Ameristep, and they readily admit it’s “a monster in the woods.” The inspiration for the blind is apparently the upswing in entire families getting into hunting, and with this hunting blind everyone will definitely fit inside.

Hunting Tips (from a girl): Is there such a thing as a do-it-all round?

One of the common questions seen in hunting groups on social media is some variation on asking what caliber is best for X animal. It pops up everywhere and instantly results in dozens of opinions, all backed by the commenter’s claim of extensive knowledge and unbelievable experiencing bagging Boone and Crockett deer or Bigfoot. Here’s the thing about the perfect round: it doesn’t exist. Now, before you race to the comments section to explain how I’m wrong and clearly don’t know which end of the gun goes “boom,” allow me to explain.

POTD: EDC Serbu Shorty

For this POTD, here is a photo of a holstered Serbu Shorty. Although I don’t think this qualifies as a holster. More like a weapon catch since the trigger and trigger guard are not covered. Unfortunately the image is low res so I cannot make out exactly what is going on with the kedex weapon catch mechanism and how it holds the Serbu Shorty in place. I would hazard a guess that it snaps onto the barrel.

The TYPHOON F12 May FINALLY Be a Shotgun/AR Platform Worth Owning!

A relatively small company from Turkey dubbed Typhoon Defense may create a large name for itself within the US soon. A lot of companies in the past have tried to create 12 Gauge AR platforms, but failed to show staying power. Some were flat out flawed from the start while others pigeon-holed themselves (the Intrepid RAS-12 comes to mind).

Review: "Prepper Guns" Asks if You're Ready for Potential Disaster

Yes, I am a gun writer – or an outdoor writer, to use the proper term. If you assume this means I read quite a bit, you’d be right, but not every gun writer out there is also a reader. For me, reading is paramount. The only thing capable of fighting my desire to get out and shoot is a good book. So I was pleased to find fellow outdoor writer Bryce M. Towsley’s newest book “Prepper Guns” is both well-thought out and detailed.

Terminology 101: Yes, it Does Matter (Even When You Comment)

Let’s talk about the importance of words, a little terminology 101. After all, you never know when you might learn something new – or find something worth passing on to a newbie (or even if it isn’t exactly new, it might serve as a gentle reminder of its value). And if you love guns like I do (passionately, ridiculously, and possibly obsessively), you’ll probably be nodding your head in agreement as you go, even as you roll your eyes. Yes, we love guns, so please, let’s get a few things straight.

VFOB (Veterans Family of Brands) Announced at NRAAM 2016

An announcement was made during this year’s NRA Annual Meeting (NRAAM) regarding a number of firearms industry businesses banding together for a common cause. The organization is called VFOB, which stands for Veteran’s Family of Brands. Of course, their name is also a reference to the military term FOB, Forward Operating Base. In the military an FOB is a secure base meant to provide support for operations. They’re important for a number of reasons, including the fact that they increase reaction time to the surrounding area. When VFOB’s founders sat down to discuss finalizing the name on the last day of SHOT Show 2016 they made it clear they wanted the organization to be seen as a source that could be trusted by consumers and relied upon by the military community: a firearms industry FOB. Now, in just a matter of months, their vision has come to fruition and is growing by leaps and bounds.

Shotgun Match Saver Shell Holder

Not everyone is into 3Gun competition Those of you who are not in the know may not have seen or heard of the match saver. It is a small piece of plastic that is adhered to the side of a shotgun just forward of the chamber/ejection port. It is used to literally save the match or stage. Sometimes in competition a shooter may be over zealous in burning down some steel targets and miss some. They use up more ammo to knock them down and often may find themselves left with a solitary steel target. At this point they have run their shotgun empty and the bolt is locked back. Well rather than reaching down to your belt for a shell, the shooter just reaches back a bit with their support hand. With a smooth sweeping motion they slide the shell back out of the match saver and into the ejection port. At this time they hit the bolt release while moving their hand back forward. Now the shotgun is loaded and ready to be fired. With practice this can be done very quickly.

Review: Newest Edition of Nosler Reloading Guide

In 1946 a man by the name of John Nosler went on a particularly frustrating moose hunt. Nosler had made an accurate killing shot on a moose using his .300 H&H, then watched as the animal failed to go down. Due to the events of that hunt he decided the gun industry was in need of bullets that got the job done every time. The result was the Partition, a dual core bullet. Using ammunition loaded with the new bullets John Nosler and his friend Clarence Purdie were able to drop moose with a single shot apiece the following fall. And in 1948, the Nosler Partition Bullet Company was founded.

Final Newsstand Issue of Shooting Illustrated Is Out

With all the coverage here on TFB as well as on other sites concerning the recent NRA Annual Meeting (NRAAM) this particular announcement  seems timely. You may have heard that Shooting Illustrated was recently named as the third in what will become a trifecta of Official Journal of the National Rifle Association magazines. American Hunter and American Rifleman have long since taken up the roles of publications available only to NRA members, in fact you could chart the progression of my life as a hunter by when I switched from American Rifleman to American Hunter. Those two magazines basically handle two aspects of the gun world: politics and hunting. (Yes it is true they each consider various issues, but those are accurate descriptions of their overall content.) Now, with Shooting Illustrated added in, members will be able to sign up for a magazine specifically dedicated to the shooting sports, training, and related gear. So why am I telling you this now?
