James interviews Mossberg at Industry Day 2017 to get a look at their new offerings. Mossberg is doubling down on short barrel shotguns this year, with short barrel versions of the 500 and 590 in non-NFA variants that meet the overall length requirements and do not need a tax stamp and extremely short barrel pistol grip versions that need only a $5 Any Other Weapon Stamp (“AOW”). Beretta brought out their latest shotguns to SHOT Show Range Day. The first shotgun that caught my eye was the new XCEL400 Black. Due to customer feedback, they are now offering the XCEL400 in black anodizing rather than blue anodizing. It comes with a 30″ barrel with extended black edition Optima HP chokes. On top, the barrel has a carbon fiber rib. The stock will come with the kick off limb saver and is Gun Pod ready. Most interesting was the oversized controls that you see on Beretta’s Tactical 1301 on the XCEL400 Black. Such as the over sized charging handle and bolt release. The XCEL400 Black will retail for $2200.

Steve shared this odd gun sitting in the back window of this pick up truck. Can you identify what this gun is made of? I see a Browning A5 Remington Model 11 inverted but the handguard is relocated. You can see the ejection port and receiver below.  I do not recognize the pistol grip.

It used to be conventional wisdom to have a 12 gauge at the ready for self defense. Then, slowly, the tactical world fell back in love with the handgun under the guides of manoeuvrability within the home. The thinking was that the handgun, being a smaller package, was better for one to clear their home. Combined with the higher capacity and ease of reloading, the handgun, was per thinking, the easier to use weapon.

Aeroknox and Empty Shell are the two guys behind the little 556 Micro Gun. I have been told that they will be at Range Day at Shot Show. I cannot wait to check out the little micro gun. But almost as awesome is the D12 bullpup semi auto shotgun. I am very curious to see how it compares to the DDI LAK12 Puma. More to come at SHOT Show in just two weeks.

Limcat Custom (known for their race guns) has introduced a new competition shotgun called VERPCAT-12. It is based on Vepr-12 shotgun chambered in 12 gauge, hence the name – VEPRCAT-12. The shotgun is designed for 3-Gun and IPSC competition shooting. Limcat Custom accepts orders, although there is no MSRP specified yet.

Shotguns in the style of an AR-15 seem to be gaining in popularity. In a way, it is understandable. The AR rifle is an easy shooting platform that has become America’s rifle. Making a shotgun that mimics many of the AR characteristics seems to make good business sense.

Inland Manufacturing released the M37 Trench Shotgun in 2016. The M37, made by Ithaca Gun Company exclusively for Inland Manufacturing, is a dedicated re-creation of the original Ithaca 37 Shotgun. This shotgun was used by U.S. servicemen throughout WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.

Although many of these sites are not quite friendly to the gun community, there are still some that retain common sense. Namely, the Indiegogo has most of the firearms and outdoor campaigns. Improvised and camouflaged firearms can be some of the most interesting weapons around, and the best ones combine inventiveness, creativity, craft work, and a sort of apocalyptic chic together into final products that are compelling far beyond the sum of their parts or their actual capabilities and practicality. Mark Serbu – one of the big names in big guns, and Royal Nonesuch – a YouTube vlogger with a penchant for the improvised and dangerous, joined forces together with Serbu’s daughter Valerie ( 50CalVal), and Mark’s friends Mike and Mike (“Beardo”), to bring to the world the fire extinguisher shotgun. As the video below illustrates, that’s pretty much what it says on the tin:

Reverend Peyton had a Shotgun made into a functioning Guitar by his friend Bryan Flemming. It is a simple three string guitar that was built onto a single shot break action shotgun.

Despite 1,000’s being made and attempting effective employment, Liberator handguns from the Second World War tend to be looked down upon. The diminutive .45 gun was simply difficult to use and near impossible to employ accurately (as demonstrated by Forgotten Weapons), requiring point-blank employment. However, the concept of the “liberator” firearm as an inexpensive effective firearm to arm resistance fighters was and still is a valid concept.

Stevens by Savage Arms has announced the expansion of their 555 over-under shotguns with three new models. The new offerings are “compact” models designed for smaller shooters or those who prefer a shorter length of pull.

UrbanCarryHolsters.com posted a video demonstrating the versatility of their holster. The Urban Carry Holster, is a leather style holster that looks more like a small satchel. It hangs onto your belt and is slipped inside the pants and stored down one’s pant leg. To help illustrate this, the first weapon drawn is a pistol grip 12 ga shotgun.

Anime fans have been nervously awaiting the March 2017 release of the live-action remake of the anime cult classic Ghost In The Shell from DreamWorks SKG. For those that take anime very seriously, the adaptation walks along a knife’s edge of a tribute to the original or a potential devastating insult. Criticisms of Scarlet Johansson playing ‘Major’, the Japanese cyborg and leading role, seems to be mostly overblown. However, we still have a few months before making a final judgement on the movie in its entirety.

Following Henry’s successful attempt at a world record 1,000 man shoot they have announced the introduction of a slew of firearms that should excite many shooters. After all, lever action shotguns are commonplace in some parts of the world; they are considered fascinating in the United States.

Happy Thanksgiving! Since turkey is a staple for the holiday what is your go to Turkey Gun?

In recent years, many of the experts in home defense have strayed away from the typical “just get a 12 gauge pump” line of thought. It seems that a good AR-15 or similar rifle is more often recommended to those seeking a means of defending their home. It appears that as a result of the shotgun being supported less and less in gun stores across the world and sales of the defensive style shotguns have seemingly slumped.

A few months ago, the Military and Police Forces of Santa Catarina, Brazil, posted a Facebook video of an officer describing how an improvised 12 gauge sledgehammer would be fired. Like many home built weapons, the action is a simple spring loaded design that uses the handle as a barrel. The user unscrews the tube handle, places a single shell into the “chamber”, screws it back on to the head of the tool and cocks the firing pin.
