This week on Wheelgun Wednesday, we are revisiting a revolver that isn't necessarily new to the market - it was announced a couple years ago - but it may have never crossed your radar or pocketbook because it is a Talo Distributor Exclusive model. This means that it is a limited-run, small batch manufactured revolver that is meant to be unique, semi-rare, and flatly, cool! So, today we are going to take a gander at the Ruger LCRx 9mm 3” to see if this is something you may want to add to your arsenal. Let’s dive in!

Wheelgun Wednesday @ TFB

Specifications: Talo Distributor Exclusive - Ruger LCRx 9mm 3”

This Talo Distributor Exclusive version of the LCRx has a lot of traits and attributes common with Ruger’s standard LCRx models like the comfortable yet practical Hogue® Tamer™ Monogrip® and the all-black aesthetic. The most notable difference in this Talo model is the 3” barrel.

  • Grip: Hogue® Tamer™ Monogrip®
  • Sights: Replaceable, Pinned Ramp Front & Adjustable Black Blade Rear
  • Barrel: 3" with 1:16" Right-Hand Twist & 6-Groove Rifling
  • Finish: PVD (Cylinder) & Matte Black (throughout)
  • Weight: 21.6 Ounces
  • Height: 5.80"
  • Overall Length: 7.50"
  • Capacity: 5 Rounds

What Does Ruger Have to Say?...

As previously mentioned, this LCRx version is not too wildly different from their other models, but if you are looking to set yourself apart from your fellow shooters, this wheelgun is minutely different and not a high-production model. Ruger had this to say about the revolver:

“The Ruger LCRX is the evolution of the revolver. Its monolithic frame is made from aerospace-grade, 7000 series aluminum in .22 LR, .22 Magnum and .38 Spl +P models and from 400 series stainless steel in the powerful .357 Magnum, 9mm Luger and .327 Federal Magnum models. The patented friction reducing cam is a next generation design in fire control systems that results in a smooth, non-stacking trigger pull and the patented polymer fire control housing holds all the fire control components in their proper dimensional relationships, reduces weight significantly and helps reduce recoil. The high-strength stainless steel cylinder is extensively fluted (reducing weight) and features a PVD finish for excellent durability. These models have an external hammer for single action use.”

Why Bother? Why Should You Purchase this LCRx?

This is an odd yet intriguing confluence of a short barrel for carry while simultaneously being long enough to effectively hit targets at distance. Additionally, you have the feathery-light frame of the LCR/LCRx series of wheelguns making it pleasant to have on-body for carry all day long.

Furthermore, 9mm is like sliced bread. Everybody has that ammo - probably pallets of it - hidden in our basements, bed sheets, and bomb shelters. So, any revolver in 9mm is going to be something you are more motivated to shoot because of the abundance, availability, and affordability of the ammunition.

Some of the other highlights that Ruger is going to want you to know are listed below by Ruger:

  • Monolithic frame is made from 400-series stainless steel.
  • Patented friction-reducing cam is a next generation design in fire control systems that results in a smooth, non-stacking trigger pull.
  • Patented polymer fire control housing holds all the fire control components in their proper dimensional relationships, reduces weight significantly and helps reduce recoil.
  • High-strength stainless steel cylinder, featuring a PVD finish for excellent durability, is extensively fluted, reducing weight.
  • Hogue® Tamer Monogrip® reduces perceived recoil.
  • Grip peg allows for a variety of grip styles to be installed.
  • Replaceable, pinned ramp front sight with white bar.
  • External hammer for single-action use.

Final Thoughts

The MSRP for the Talo Distributor Exclusive Ruger LCRx 9mm 3” is set at $839. To me, that seems a bit steep for what is meant to be a carry gun that people would be willing to recreationally shoot. It is not a Custom Shop revolver in the regard that it has fancy embellishments or a highly-tuned trigger for competition shooting. Simply, it is a unique offering in that Ruger does not make many 3” barreled revolvers via the LCR/LCRx wheelgun line.

It all boils down to whether you want to set yourself apart from your peers, and add in a limited-run, Talo Distributor Exclusive revolver to your collection. It is up to you. Would you throw this one in your gun safe, or would you save your money for something entirely different from Ruger? As always, let us know all of your thoughts about Ruger, their Talo Distributor Exclusive LCRx 9mm 3”, and any of their firearms in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.

Why have a full-sized grip and adjustable sight on a short-barrel reduced-capacity gun? Why have plain black sights on a gun for defensive carry?

I've been saying that for years. The original LCR had low profile sights, there's a 3" SP101 with low profile sights, but then Ruger thought the 3" LCR needed large, adjustable sights. I also don't like how Ruger has never sold the 3" model in double-action only. If only they had just added an extra inch of barrel to the original LCR and left everything else alone.
