WINNING: ASA Announces That Suppressor Exports Are Now Legal

In a move that should hopefully boost the suppressor industry, the American Suppressor Association has just announced that the State Department has rescinded a nearly 20-year-old memo that prevented the commercial exportation of suppressors outside of the United States. More distributors, dealers and customers around the world should increase demand and production here in the U.S., funneling more resources into research and design, giving domestic customers better options. Commercial suppressor exports will also allow for comparisons between manufacturers outside of the United States – unfortunately, U.S. regulations still prevent the commercial importation of foreign silencers and other firearms regulated by the National Firearms Act.

Hey silent superfans and welcome back to the 133rd edition of Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the Nitro N20 modular rifle suppressor set to be at dealers in a few months. Last week we got an introductory look at the Pen15 integrally suppressed pen gun from Cotton Branch Custom Firearms. We’ll get back to some velocity and video testing in a few weeks. This week we discuss the benefits and complications of modular suppressors and where they are most useful. Let’s take a look.

"Summertime Silence" Demo and Vendor Event by Silencer Shop and Texas Ordnance Depot

Since opening its doors in 2010, Austin, Texas-based Silencer Shop has proven to be a key player in the recent explosion of the suppressor market. Their efforts and innovations have done as much or more to make suppressors accessible than anyone else in the game. This accessibility and increased demand can then, in turn, be credited in large part with the proliferation of more manufacturers producing a supply of cans of ever-increasing quality at all price points from affordable to extravagant. If you’d asked previous generations whether they thought silencers would reach current levels of popularity, it’s doubtful whether they would’ve believed it. Although things aren’t perfect, in all we still live in a pretty great time to shoot quietly. Continuing their work to bring suppressors to the people, Silencer Shop is preparing to co-host a demo event on July 18th at Texas Ordnance Depot in Hico, Texas. The “Summertime Silence” official event description reads:

Innovative Arms Teases Us With The Possibility Of A Welrod Clone

Regular Silencer Saturday reader and commenter Brett Baker dropped a friendly knowledge bomb on us last weekend. Mr. Baker alerted the community to a post on Sturmgewehr.com signaling the possibility of Innovative arms building Welrod clone pistols for the U.S. market. If the final build product is anything like the below pictured prototype, buyers will not be disappointed.

Gallenson's Guns: The Biggest Little Gun Store in America

There are two things that are easily remembered in the gun world.  Your first gun, and your favorite gun store.  Nestled in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City is my personal favorite, Gallenson’s Guns and Ammo.  In 1916 Russian immigrant and tailor,  William Gallenson, opened the store as a tailor shop. In 1925 that tailor shop turned gun store and pawnshop, and it’s been open ever since.

SILENCER SATURDAY #110: GSL Phoenix – Best Subgun Can On Earth?

First off, I sincerely apologize for my clickbait title – I am mostly poking fun at a site that loves to use out-of-this-world headlines. Literally. But in all honesty, the GSL Phoenix (formerly the Gemtech MK-9K) could possibly be the best submachine gun silencer ever made. Keep in mind however, like the rest of life, there is no free lunch. But before we get into the review, welcome back to the 110th installment of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by my friends at Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new Resonator K rifle suppressor. Fresh off of the whirlwind of SHOT Show 2020 I have stacked up a few months of reviews, starting with the YHM Resonator K, the Dead Air Nomad L, and three from GSL Technology. We’ll kick it off today with the GSL Phoenix – a grail suppressor for me ever since the MK-9K went underground.

SILENCER SATURDAY #106: 5.7mm Suppressor And Host Options

Welcome back to the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by my friends at Yankee Hill Machine – home of the Turbo and Resonator line of rifle caliber suppressors. Last week we compared the new H&K SP5 with the TPM MP5SD, a showdown we’ll revisit in coming months. This past week we had the pleasure of announcing the Ruger-57 pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. Unsurprisingly, my first question was about the availability of threaded barrels for suppressor use. While a threaded barrel for the new Ruger-57 will surely be a factory option in the future, there will those of us who will not want to wait. So, with all the renewed excitement in the 5.7x28mm round, let’s take a look at some 5.7mm suppressor and host options.

SILENCER SATURDAY #103: The Galil ACE Suppressed – KNS Style

Good morning everyone and welcome back to another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, home of the Turbo K2. Last week we dove into an academic exercise regarding the normalization of suppressors by the government, industry and consumers alike. The comment section was lively, with most of us agreeing that the perception of silencers, the NFA process and NFA laws need to change. In case anyone is wondering, my stance on any bans is absolute – we should focus our efforts on criminal actions, not inanimate objects. This week we are back out on the range with a IWI Galil ACE suppressed with a SilencerCo Saker and outfitted with a KNS Precision AK Adjustable Gas Piston. Thank you to both IWI and KNS for loaning me the equipment for today’s Silencer Saturday evaluation.

SILENCER SATURDAY #97: Shotgun Suppressors – Worth It?

Good morning everyone and thanks for joining us for the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine – manufacturers of the new Resonator R2 with adaptable interface (additional information below). Last week we took you through the basics on how to buy a silencer; an important topic but admittedly a real snooze-fest. One commenter requested some extra hot baffle action for this week, literally pushing a suppressor beyond manufacturer recommendations. While I’m not ready to torch a perfectly good can, the point was taken – let’s spice it up this week with a look at shotgun suppressors.

SILENCER SATURDAY #94: Quietest Suppressor Setup

Good morning everyone and thank you for joining us for another installment of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, makers of the YHM Turbo K 5.56 silencer. Last week we discussed first silencers for the beginner. Today we’ll reach for the proverbial stars and attempt to define the quietest suppressor, host and ammunition combination available on the consumer market. While we can dream of firearms developed for internally silenced ammunition, today’s discussion will revolve around off-the-shelf guns, silencers and ammo that result in the least amount of noise.

SILENCER SATURDAY #76: Firearm Suppressors In The Crosshairs

Good morning everyone and thank you for joining us for episode #76 of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. Unfortunately, we will take a break from our regular technical and review content to discuss firearm suppressors in the news. As always, I’ll do my very best to stay away from partisan politics as well as drama and sensationalism. But, unlike some media reports on the functionality of silencers, we will stick to the facts as we know them – even though this is obviously a subject that is close to my heart.

American Suppressor Association Industry Forum

It’s hard to talk about the National Firearms Act (NFA) and not feel frustrated and angry. Not only are we constrained by arbitrary rules, regulations and laws, but we also have to pay a tax and wait a long time to take ownership of suppressors, short barreled firearms and other weapons classified under the NFA. So, while we strive and yearn for deregulation, we also look for ways to improve the process we are forced to use if we want regulated items. Last week, the American Suppressor Association hosted their second annual industry forum where the topic of modernizing the NFA process and current wait times was presented to government officials.
