Savage Arms knows how to troll a salivating crowd. Last week they popped a picture on Instagram with Valkyrie imprinted on the handguard. Over the past month, dribbles of information on the new round have come from a select few sources. But from all the smart people I have talked with, the hype is real.

Ammunition maker Federal Premium recently released its full bundle of press info on their new .224 Valkyrie round, coming on the heels of teasers released at Big 3 East. The .224 Valkyrie is a high performance .22 caliber round for the AR-15, which uses heavy, low drag bullets to dramatically improve the long range performance of the platform versus the .223 Remington and other rounds. This is the same principle that has been used in rounds like the .260 Remington and 6.5 Grendel for years, now finally applied to a factory .22 caliber round.

Bushnell expanded its sighting options for the AR style rifle this year with the addition of three new laser sights. These sights are part of the company’s AR Optics line. The new laser sights are called the Haste, the Chase and the Rush.

Companies tend to come in two flavors – those who expand across a wide array of products and those with razor-focus on their competencies. It would seem that Timney Triggers, which as the name implies is known for their triggers, is perhaps showing a glimmer of the former, having spent many years as the latter. Timney’s latest offering is the “49R”, a safety/selector for AR-pattern modern sporting rifles.

When it comes to mounting optics on AR-15s or any of our beloved black guns, a solid one piece mount is what most of us look for. Possibly the most popular or well known one on the market is the Burris AR-P.E.P.R. (AR – Proper Eye Position Ready) mount. A close second place draws many other brands to mind like the Nikon M-223 (Monarch-223), Leupold Mark 2 IMS (Integral Mounting System) or Vortex Viper mounts. Weaver has been in the optics game for decades, but only now are joining the ranks of these other companies in making a dedicating AR mount.

CMMG announced the company added 6.5 Creedmoor to its line of AR style rifles. Right now, the company is offering four different models chambered for the long range cartridge: the Mk3, Mk3 P, Mk3 DTR and the Mk3 DTR2.

Stag Arms introduced a number of new products at the recent SHOT Show including a new rifle called the Stag-10. If you were to guess that the Stag-10 is a AR-10 like gun chambered in .308, you would be correct.

Caracal USA was at the Industry Day at the Range Event in Boulder City, NV. The company had a pair of its modern sporting rifles on hand for demonstrations. The two guns are AR-style rifles and are called the CAR814 A2 and CAR816 A2 respectively. Both are made in the United States.

RTT Firearms is now selling a new .308 semi-automatic rifle called the AR10 SASS. The new rifle looks like it could be a good choice for anyone needing a precision rifle in .30 caliber.

Savage Arms posted a teaser video on YouTube yesterday showing remnants of an MSR (modern sporting rifle). Some simple features that can be seen from the shadowy video are an M-Lok free float handguard, a side charging handle, and a dust cover (possibly plastic). The Savage Arms MSR should officially be unveiled at SHOT Show.

I am sure I mirror many Modern Sporting Rifle enthusiasts in my zeal to maintain organization. After years of builds parts can scatter to the organizational wind. Putting together new builds was becoming frustrating, especially with the variety of MSR parts to review. Handguards, pistol grips, and other items were donned and doffed with regularity. New Frontier Armory, known for their billet modern sporting rifle receivers across a variety of calibers has announced the release of an extra-heavy buffer for AR-type weapons. The extra-heavy buffer is designed for pistol caliber carbines to improve function.
