There have been a lot of numbers thrown around with regards to the Russian ammo ban. Many of them are unsourced or unattributed, and as near as I can tell, wrong. So what are the actual numbers? What is the actual impact of this ban going to be?

Under new State Department sanctions, there will be no Russian ammo or firearms coming into the US beginning on September 7th of this year. The Department of State published a fact sheet today regarding new sanctions imposed on Russia. The relevant text of the sanctions includes:

Previously in our Photo Of The Day article series, we took a look at pictures of the  AEK-919K Kashtan submachine gun and  DP-64 double-barreled grenade launcher, firearms designed by the Russian  Degtyarev Plant. In today’s POTD we have another interesting firearm developed by this company – the KORD rifle.

Ukrainian Mayak arms plant has designed an AK variant called KalashNash that has a quick barrel change feature. It is possible to change the caliber of this rifle to any popular intermediate cartridge (5.56×45, 7.62×39,  5.45×39, 6.5 Grendel, etc.) by swapping the populated barrels and using caliber-specific bolts and magazines. Presumably, the two slots cut at the front bottom portion of the chamber area (see the picture below) are where the barrels are retained in the front trunnion.

Zastava Arms USA will have a new M70 AKM configuration coming around in late February 2021. Zastava USA brought their new rifle to TFB’s GunFest 2021 for us to get a good look. The modernized M70 will have numerous new features coming from the factory, such as a specially made muzzle brake, full length, M-LOK compatible aluminum handguard, a side-mounted optics rail that’s aligned with the barrel, along with a Tango Down pistol grip and Magpul Zhukov stock.

Lingle Industries is a new company that has just released their first product –  CZ Bren 2 lower receiver called BREAK (stands for BREn AK). What sets the Lingle Industries BREAK lower receiver apart from the factory one is that it takes standard 7.62x39mm AK magazines with rock & lock insertion as opposed to the proprietary straight insert mags used in 7.62×39 Bren 2, and it’s also compatible with AR-15 trigger mechanisms (including the safety selector) and pistol grips.

About a year ago, YouTuber Garand Thumb published a video review of a custom Rifle Dynamics AK pistol built to his specifications which he called “the best AK ever built“. Apparently, the AK featured in the video generated enough interest to make Rifle Dynamics offer it as a custom, Garand Thumb edition of their RD 704 pistol. Let’s see what features this gun packs.

Two weeks ago, CZ issued a soft release of their U.S.-made conversion kits for the Bren 2. The kits are made for Bren owners that wish to update the furniture to have the look and functionality of the Czech-made version. For those unaware, U.S. law, ( 18 U.S. Code § 922) commonly referred to as “922r” requires a certain number of parts made in the United States to be installed when changing out firearm parts from its imported configuration. CZ-USA explained that they didn’t have an official press release as the first batch of Bren 2 compliance kits weren’t enough to meet every owner’s demand, but they were happy to provide some of the details below.

AKs of Zastava Arms USA are some of the highest quality production Kalashnikov pattern rifles currently available in the USA. Their full-size 7.62x39mm rifle, ZPAPM70, is a rugged and reliable gun and as the company says, is built like a tank. However, 7.62x39mm Zastava AKs have always lacked one important feature – chrome-lined barrels. A lot of people have been asking Zastava Arms USA to add this feature to the rifles and looks like the company listens to its customers because from now on, all ZPAPM70 rifles will come standard with chrome-lined barrels.

Slagga Manufacturing, a company that has been working on creating a US-made replica of the Soviet VSS Vintorez rifle, has announced about a significant progress in this project: they’ve built a working prototype of Viska, the American Vintorez.

Mikhail Kalashnikov‘s AK47 has become one of the most recognizable and iconic rifles and fielded by many nations, freedom fighters, terrorists, as well as firearms enthusiasts.  There have been numerous variations on the AK platform since its adoption by the Soviet Union more than 70 years ago, some of which were dependant on which Warsaw Pact country it originated from.  According to Wikipedia, more than 100 million rifles based on Kalashnikov’s design have been produced, and around 90 countries have adopted them in some form or another.
