Welcome everyone to the 163rd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.
POTD: Type 81 SR
In today’s Photo Of The Day, we have a rather interesting Chinese rifle imported to Canada by Tactical Imports Corporation. This SVD/PSL lookalike called Type 81 SR is based on the Type 81 rifle which has a hybrid design that merges the Type 56 (Chinese AK-47 variant) and Type 63 (Chinese rifle based on the SKS) rifle designs. The Type 81 SR is chambered in 7.62x39mm and like the Iraqi Tabuk, tries to push this intermediate cartridge into the DMRosphere.

In February of 2022, the entire family of weapons was officially presented in Saudi Arabia at the World Defense Show exhibition. Now, there is a new member in this family – CW39, which stands for “combat weapon chambered for 7.62×39”.

While we were at the same event, SIG Sauer also revealed to us that they would be soon releasing a new series of rifles in the MCX line, The MCX Spear-LT. This new line of rifles adds some new functionality and features to the MCX Virtus design as well as a somewhat surprising new chambering – 7.62x39mm.

Converting Ruger American Ranch Rifles To Accept AK Magazines
If you’ve been eyeing the Ruger American Ranch rifles, specifically the ones chambered in 7.62x39mm, you’ve probably noticed that Ruger opted to use their own proprietary magazine from the Mini-30 rifle. While no one seems to be complaining about reliability with the Mini-30 magazine, there have been complaints online that AK pattern magazines aren’t an option for owners of the Ruger American Ranch rifles. One man, Mr. Brandenburg, has begun to offer his services in converting the Ruger American Ranch rifles to accept AK magazines.
DIY Zastava M70 Furniture Ready AK From Atlantic Firearms
Atlantic Firearms has introduced the DIY Zastava M70 that you can add whatever M70 stock, pistol grip, and handguard set to, which allows the user to customize their rifle right off the bat. AKM rifles have become much more modular in recent years, including lots of options when it comes to furniture. The ability to start off with the shooter’s desired stock set may save some money if they can pick out which stock set they’d like, as well as not having to add to the unused gun accessory pile from the stock set they didn’t want.
TFB Review: Arsenal 7.62×39 Ammo from American Marksman
Earlier this year American Marksman informed me they were importing Arsenal 7.62×39 from Bulgaria. In the wake of the Russian ammo import ban, this was music to my ears. So in the midst of a great steel-cased ammo drought, American Marksman was kind enough to send over a couple hundred rounds of this freshly minted Bulgarian ammo for testing.
Rifle Dynamics Quickhatch AK Pistol
Quickhatch, another name for a wolverine, is how the new AK pistol by Rifle Dynamics called. Inspired by the Krinkov, the Rifle Dynamics Quickhatch adds modern features to the original concept and is chambered in 7.62×39 which I’d say is a better cartridge for a weapon of this size. Let’s take a closer look.

Firing an RPG-7 Rocket Launcher Trainer
In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves operates an RPG-7 rocket launcher. Well, kind of. This RPG-7 Trainer is a unit that was demilled, but the fire control unit was reactivated and the launcher restored to being operable.
