The Prodigy from Springfield Armory was their first foray into double-stack (DS) 1911-style pistols when it was announced some years ago. More recently, Springfield Armory has introduced 10-round versions for restrictive locales, Coyote Brown Cerakote colorways, and today, a compensated version was released in the 1911 DS Prodigy Comp 9mm.

Specifications - Springfield Armory 1911 DS Prodigy Comp 9mm

These new 1911 DS Prodigy Comp 9mm handguns will don all of the familiar traits that we are used to, but we also now have a ported barrel and slide for reduced recoil, faster slide cycling, and generally flatter shooting. Those two main models are listed below as well as low capacity versions:

Why Port the Barrel?

The integral compensator on the Prodigy Comp is discreetly designed, featuring a single port on the top of the hammer-forged slide and barrel. By redirecting gas upwards, it reduces muzzle rise and enhances control allowing for faster and more accurate follow-up shots. Additionally, the tritium front sight is positioned behind the compensator to ensure an uninterrupted sight picture.

A Word from Springfield Armory on the 1911 DS Prodigy Comp 9mm

With the introduction of these new compensated Prodigy models, this builds out the Prodigy family to be 14 unique variants. Springfield is extremely excited about this newest release as it comes off the heels of the recently announced Hellcat Pro Comp which sports a very similarly ported barrel. Here’s what Springfield Armory have to say:

Geneseo, Illinois - July 30th, 2024 - Springfield Armory® is proud to announce the launch of the 1911 DS Prodigy™ Comp AOS 9mm in 5” and 4.25” variants. Both of these pistols are integrally compensated to reduce felt recoil and muzzle rise, and combine the most beloved characteristics of the 1911 with modern capacity for unrivaled performance.

“The Prodigy pistol has proven to be very popular with shooters looking for the appeal of the classic 1911, but with enhanced double-stack magazine capacity and modern features,” said Steve Kramer, Springfield Armory’s Vice President of Marketing. “The flat-shooting Prodigy Comp adds the benefit of reduced muzzle flip and faster follow-up shots to an already highly capable design.”
